I'm on a highway to hell

User Rating: 10 | Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway PS3
I had played the previous game of this series BIA: Earned in blood and found some of the controls and also other aspects of the game a tad frustrating. Of particular note was the map system and the lack of detail in regards to where things were and how far you were from something.

This game improves on these flaws exponentially and the map is so well detailed you can actually see a log or even a fence for cover on the map now. The game itself does require some thinking a good placement of your other fire teams to put down some cover fire, heavy fire or even destroying cover etc. If you decide to go in yourself all guns blazing you will get ripped to shreds and are forced to rethink your strategy.

Weapon cache's are done in the style of parrachute drops of which you don't see coming form the air, but you will find them on the ground.

Gameplay 9/10

This goes without saying as this the first game that I have played that truly captures the feel and essence of ww2 battle. MOH came close in the previous installments on the ps2 but this puts that to shame.

Sound 10/10

The sound is spot on including the "ringing" sound when a shell goes off right next to you and you can't hear a thing. The 88's are the most terrifying gun in the game and taking them out requires some lateral thinking which they (gearbox) have emulated well.

Graphics 10/10

Now for it's first outing on the ps3 graphically it's an absolute gem, no line draw issues, no-looking-like-ps2-port-to-ps3. Gearbox did a whole new engine to take full advantage of the ps3's power. Nice work.

There are some parts in the game where you go out on your own, in particular when you raid a house etc. This adds some variety to the game and while some may not like it, it offers the player to think in terms of where cover is and how to take down the enemy using the environment and the such.

The best detailed level is the hosptial which I won't spoil except to say, you will be surprised.

Multiplayer 0/0

The game supports multiplay but online only which is a bit of a let down as it would have been nice to see you and a mate take on the game together split screen.

I never actually played it online so I will not comment.

Final notes

For those who want a great ww2 game that grabs, draws you in with some well scripted and layed out scenes then this is the game for you. The strategy is the final touch which seperates this game from the other FPS games out there.
