For just 800 Wii points, this classic RPG is a steal.

Breath of Fire is the series that really got me into RPGs. It's great that VC has Breath of Fire II to show off one of the great RPGs that SNES had to offer. Graphically, it doesn't really stand up to some of the other SNES titles. However, it does have some unique usage of colors for areas and special effects. The fighting system is solid and fusing characters with various Shamans keeps characters from getting stale. The boss battles are highly amusing as well. The only downside to boss battles is if you leveled your characters even moderately, the fight is usually accomplished very quickly with little strategy involved.

You will find the sound quality of this game top notch for it's time. The music is epic throughout, intense when it needs to be, and triumphant. The battle sound effects are great too. When you do a special (critical) attack and you hear that slash sound, it perfectly reflects the amount of HP you just took off of the enemy.

The majority of your characters also have "field abilities" which
basically gives you the ability to perform tasks such as fishing, moving across gaps, and hunting while on the over-world map. Hunting is far more useful in the beginning of the game where money is harder to come by. Through hunting you can acquire 'roast' and 'sprrib' which completely restore your HP. Fishing will help you to obtain some of the games most elite of items.

While this game is overall great, Breath of Fire II has it's share of flaws. The English translation is somewhat comical at times. When fishing you will notice that "rod" is spelled "lod". When you go to fuse a character with shamans, you will be asked if you need an explanation on it. If you say yes to the explanation you won't get one. If you say no, you will get one.

Another downside to this game is the fact that it is easy to make irreversable mistakes and miss important opportunities if not usung a strategy guide. For example, if you are not careful of the tenants you invite to 'Township', you could end up with a bunch of useless people inhabiting your houses. When you invite certain people to live there, it makes it impossible to invite useful people who could have opened a shop or taught you spells.

Don't be discouraged by the bad, as it is by far outweighed by the good. You will spend 40+ hours completing this lengthy RPG. The characters have great personalities, and the storyline is fantastic. For just 800 Wii points, this classic RPG is a steal. I had a greater experience with this 16 bit game than most of the new Wii games.
