I was worried when I first bought this game. The graphics and the controls were different than any game I've played. Also, I'm a Call of Duty fan and I really enjoy how it controls, but I thought the Borderlands controls were pretty good and eventually fell into place (although the gun does wobble a bit at first). Things take a little to get used to... but soon you'll be up and running. Killing is the name of the game and you'll be doing lots of it. Guns and fun and plentiful in this FPS RPG. You won't keep a gun very long as you'll find one that is better or adds something new; fire damage, electric shock, etc.
The story is okay, but you're not playing for the story... hopefully it's for the journey. Everything went very well and was fun for almost the entire game. The only downside I found was towards the end. The last few missions/boards felt rushed... as you the enemies were just annoying and the final boss was one of those forgettable, uninspiring and easy/boring guys with no closure.
With all the expansions out go for a Game of the Year bundle.
