BloodRayne's violence is very sloppy, but so is the game itself.

User Rating: 6.5 | BloodRayne PS2
Gameplay: BloodRayne is an ambitious game which at times does not deliver on all levels, but holds up. You play as a stunning, yet dark red-headed half-vampire name Rayne, who works for the secretive Brimstone Society. Your job is to hunt down supernatural events and rid of them to protect the world. It does sound interesting, but at times the story isn't the best. The beginning seems a bit rushed to me for some reason, but I can't really point it out. It seems your just thrown into a situation. Between the 1st and 2nd acts, there is a drastic change in setting, and it seems odd also. First you're just fighting zombies and parasitic creatures in an almost aincient Louisiana, then in a WWII type Argentina. At times it feels like your in the present and not-pre war 1930's era. I constantly feel that way, maybe it is because the way Rayne acts. Not that it is a bad performance, but it doesn't fit the time. Although you still are fighting Nazis and other creatures, the fighting is a bit funny. It actually is boring and just consists of pressing one button again and again. Not much to it at all. There is a good variety of weapons, but you really never notice any difference between them and usually can never tell each apart. The main bosses are interesting and distinguishable, very cool some of them. Some variety is also thrown in with different kinds of level, one including you and a mech sort of tank. There are also some interesting twists to the story which adds to the best element of the game, the story.

Graphics: The graphics on this game are quite blocky, but forgiven as they do set the mood well. The different areas are very neat, but can be repetitive at times. Character models are okay, but also are affected by the blockiness. The bosses all look quite cool which is a plus though, considering you fight most of the same enemies all the time.

Sound: The soundtrack to this game is an average, nothing memorable or anything. The songs near the end are quite good though, and urge you on through the killing spree. Rayne's voice is quite good, but as said before, just seems a bit too modern and doesn't fit the era right. Mostly everyone else has a German accent which gets very annyoing at periods, especially the soldiers yelling "Get her off!" as you suck their blood. Guns are just average and all pretty much sound the same.

Value: BloodRayne doesn't have any unlockables nor multiplayer. It has three levels of difficulty for those who want to go back and play again just to enjoy the story. For you cheaters, there are over 50 codes to enter and play with which should make you happy. Overall, BloodRayne does and ambitious job at a new style of game. They did some things right, yet others wrong. If you are looking for a good rental for a weekend, I suggest this game, as a game only takes around 7 hours to beat if you are taking your time with it.
