Forget the Hype and Black becomes a fun and refreshing FPS

User Rating: 8.4 | Black PS2
Black... once you get past the hype you realise that the straight forward game play works well for this game because the few actions you're able to do are extremely satisfying and polished.

This game's frequent all-out gun fights are a feast for the senses: the audio rivals the Medal of Honour series for it's immersing effect, the combat is intense enough to keep you on edge and fun enough to keep you replaying your favorite levels, the rumble feature on your controller provides good feedback, and the sheer amount of environmental destruction sets the bar for First Person Shooters.

Blacks environmental damage including non-disappearing dead enemies, spent bullet casings and non-disappearing bullet holes creates a sense of awe when you walk through a cleared battle zone.

The weapons are powerful and look and sound great.

Hopefully Black 2 will fix the overly simple enemy AI and introduce new classes of enemies, as three types is not enough.

Black's strengths make it unrivalled among other FPS's but it has below average AI and frankly the developers insult you by impeding your path with low lying objects like railings, raised ground, and logs which you can't clear because you can't jump. Black takes between 6-12 hours to complete so it's pretty short but I'd rather play a short game where you're always moving ahead than a long game where you're always backtracking.

Is Black fun? Yes.
Is Black Great? Yes and No.

Some people will want to own Black, for others it will be a good rental but everyone who likes FPS's should experience it.
