The spiritual succesor to System Shock 2

User Rating: 9.5 | BioShock PC
Bioshock is often called the spiritual succesor to System Shock 2(1999).
It's a Sci FPS.The action takes place in 1960,in a city called Rapture, where the elite society used to live but because of the plasmids,it was ruined. The technology also comes with a backlash.
You play the role of Jack, the most common name possible who survived a plane crash. The game begins with a superb, fascinating scene, with you swimming on the sea,in the moonlight after the plane crash, surrounded by fire & seeing how the plane sinks. Then you see a light house or something, you head there & that's it,you're sucked it,destiny has brought you here. You enter a bathisphere & descend to Rapture. In Rapture you have only enemies & you can make some friens only if you prove yourself having a good heart.
You encounter splicers of different forms everywhere. These are humans that have been "consumed",mutated by the plasmids...plasmid=some stuff that you inject into your body,i don't know to explain it,it doesn't matter. This city is ruled,or it was ruled by A. R. & a guy F. is responsible for the fall of this idealistic, elite city.A woman named Dr T. is called the Big Syster, which takes care of-little systers, little girls-lol!
You get ADAM with which you can get or "buy" plasmids from special vending machines or something like this.I really never liked to use this plasmids, only when i needed them, when i was forced to use them-i definitely preferred the traditional weapons. There is a plasmid called telekinesys that let's you levitate & control objects to throw at your enemies-very similar with the gravity gun from Half-Life 2.Also,when you press the E key,you can hear a sound that is also similar with the sound from Half-Life 1,produced only by pressing the activate key E.You will also the revolver & crossbow with heated bolts...& that's enough prof of Half-Life's influence over this game.
When you die,you will be resurected, you will begin the game from the closest Vita-Chamber to you, very similar to the ones from Super Metroid.I never died when i played this game, just once, but intentionally,to see how it is,what it happens...the game is very easy but it has an annoying gameplay. For example, when you use the machine-gun & fire while you sit still,it tends to go up all by itself. That is very frustrating & when a splicer shoots at you or other enemies you see sparkles all over the screen, you can barely understand what's going on,the image becomes blurry. It's part of the gameplay,it's not glitch or something.
In the game you find numerous vending machines, health stations & stuff where you can buy weapons, heatlh packs, upgrade weapons etc, with $.& to buy plasmids & upgrade plasmids you need adam.
The Big Daddys are the most memorable part of the game-They are some monsters, juggernauts equipped in vintage heavy iron diving suit. They are the protectors of the little systers that they call him Mr.Pebbles, lol! Dr.T. simply can't understand how her little systers are so attracted to those bad stinking monsters. The little systers are also "corrupted" by the plasmids & after you kill a Big Daddy Mr.Pebbles, you can choose what to do with the littler syster-Press L to rescue her, or press H to harvest her.By harvesting her,you will kill her & take adam-when you rescue her,you exorcise her & the Big Syster will reward you with random prizes & also help you in your missions, quests.
Fighting a Big Daddy is quite easy ...when you see a Big Daddy he's ignoring you like he's not seeing you but once you begin to shoot him he will become enraged like a bull & smash you, stunning you-another frustrating moment. In those moments you can't do anything as you see the screen shaking.Through-out the game you are in a continuos search for items & stuff, you litteraly have or can search almost any item, object that you see in your way & all the bodies. You pick-up journal radios & radios through which you get your mission objectives. You don't need to switch madlly all the time to see the map because you have an arrow on the top of screen that leads you to your target.
In the game you can also play a puzzle game to open a safe-lock where you can find more goodies or you can obtain trough out the game the option to hack items meaning that you can skip the puzzle.Be warned-if you fail to complete the puzzle, you will be electrocuted.
You travel through Rapture only with a submerging vehicle that links the stations of the game.Bioshock has a lenght between just right/medium & long so it's perfect from this point of view.
I feel that this game is not revolutionary or groundbreking but it might be in top 10 best FPS of all time. It's definitelly worth playing no matter what...
ps:it has no multiplayer,just the single-player campaign.
