Horrifically entertaining. Lots of potential for a classic sci-fi adventure but suffered design flaws and short gameplay

It's been a long, long time since I played this. I would play it again before reviewing it here but Bioforge won't run on many of todays PCs .Hardware manufacturers no longer cater for DOS games and DOSBox is still very limited. I'll go by what I can remember. Bioforge's setting is a bleak futuristic universe, possibly in the style of the movie Aliens. You play the game as one of many prisoners who have been taken to an unknown planet for some horrible bio-mechanical experimentation. Your character wakes up in a cell to find that his body is not what it once was. Metal panels here and there, super strength, a powerful blaster weapon built into his arm. He has forgotten his identity but hasn't forgotten that this isn't his home and he doesn't intend to stay for very long. Initially, graphics and sound are impressive. The game uses the kind of pre-rendered backdrops that you would see in the original Resident Evil. Modelling is definitely up to scratch for a game in that period and for one that runs under DOS. Gameplay in Bioforge is similar to that of a point-and-click adventure, with some interesting puzzles and interaction with characters and objects. Controlling Bioforge on the other hand is nothing like point-and-click but more like a beat-em-up. Half of the control keys are made up of punches and kicks. Now, don't go thinking that this might be a clever fusion of genres because it isn't. Action scenes in the game are few and far between and largely unsatisfying. Bioforge is one of the first, if not THE first game to use motion capture. Unfortunately, this is an element that brings the game down. Character animation is clumsy and has no fluidity. Finally, the game just didn't seem to have enough length. Just when it gets interesting, it's over. I'm not going to say you should avoid this game at all costs unless you are just a casual gamer. If you're a hardcore fan of sci-fi adventure and you still have the older PC hardware lying around, give it a try.
