One of MIDWAY's finest. Unfortunately with a major flaw. (controls)

User Rating: 7.7 | Bio FREAKS PS
I just saw the flashback Playstation title story on gamespot and instantly thought about Bio Freaks which was one of my favourite beat em' ups back in the days. Anyway, i just wanted to type some lines about this title cause the ratings are a little too low I think. So, there are two people on this planet, those who like Midway games and those who don't. I count myself to the first category. If it comes down to beat em' up's Midway usually takes the darker, bloodier way like it's the case with Mortal Kombat and I like that. I rather have such a game then one of those "cartoonish, goreless with stupid flashes and color bubbles as hit indicator"- Tekken, Soul Calibur or Street Fighter games. Now for Bio Freaks. The game does everything right from the intro sequence to the fighters to the gore. The only problem are the controls. The fighters are often to slow to react to the moves you input which ends in not being executed. It's really hard to get the connection from the controls to the fighters / moves. And this is the main negative of this game. Since Bio Freaks was made for the arcade and canceled but then found it's way to the Playstation and the N64 there must have been some quality issues which I think were the controls. If the controls are not tight the game will not bring in those coins. You won't spent a half hour on a arcade machine to finally get the feeling but for home consoles it's a other story. Personally Bio freaks is one of my favourite beat em' ups. Mainly for the style. It's a very gory and a very cool one. It already had instant stage fatalities, permanent weapons and the ability to cut of limbs while fighting. Something which was never (or very late) introduced in Mortal Kombat. I'm a little bit disappointed that there is still no sign of a sequel but maybe Midway will pick it up someday. For all who like Midway beat em' up's this here is at least a must see. Bullseye!
