Now here's a game that is underrated.

User Rating: 6.9 | Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance PS2
The great name of Capcom, the masters of beat-em-up type of game. This reputation has become poison in this case.

It is true Beat Down: Fist of Vengence is fairly bad game, technically. The game has so many flaws it is difficult to write them all down. However, the unique gameplay of this game and ideas are still there and makes this game entertaining despite of it's flaws. Thus making this game underrated although it is a bad game techinically.

One thing players will notice right away is one HORRIBLE loading time. Not only loading time are fairly long, it is incredibly frequent, as if you try to move one point to another, you have to go through several loading time. Making this game incredibly annoying. Also the graphic doesn't do justice to really requiring such long and frequent loading time. That's one thing it doesn't have any type of saving grace. It's just bad and utter failure of the company. This and sound would be two aspect of this game I simply cannot talk any positive. There is simply no excuse.

Speaking of sound, damn the voice acting is bad. Not utterly bad like first Resident Evil or Magna Carta or others, but still clearly bad. The music? I don't know is there music? I can't remember any music from this game.

Now that we talked about bad, let's talk about goods for mixed reactions. First the graphic. The graphics aren't exactly eye popping and they are rather stiff. The details of background is unimpressive, but what saves them is character details. There is multiple clothings you can buy to fit your character the looks you want. Also except for when they run, their poses and attacks look fairly good. Most impressive part would be their bruises and blood. When they get punched, the areas they get hit would be bruised light to heavy depending on the damage. Walking around the town with bloody nose not only look painful, but it is fairly impressive that the game could have such detail. Also minor accesories like hat and sunglasses gets flown off if large enough hit lands, making the game quite impressive with visual effects. Again not eye popping, but there are minor details that should be noted because it simply makes the game more interesting.

Moving on to the gameplay. I have to say the control is horrible. it is unresponsive and difficult to aim. Many times you will be frustrated because your character swings for the air instead of opponent. However, the fast punches and kicks just makes it oddly entertaining. There isn't enough moves to have any depth. Actually there isn't much moves that could be considered very useful. But just landing those fast punches and kicks and seeing the bruises of opponents is oddly satisfying. This is beat-em-up type of game's beauty. Idiotically simple and just beat em up. With plenty of different melee items you can use that also breaks at times when you smack them with, it reminds you why we like beat-em-up type of games in the first place. Still, the flaws of this game is too large to fully appreciate that feeling, and there are so many annoying quests to really have the time to enjoy the good ol beat down. In the end, the game will entertain you, it's just that it will annoy you as much as it entertains you.

Story can be completely ignored. It's not that interesting, and it's not very good. Still if you actually go through with the story, it does give rather curious moments where you might be just intrigued enough to actually give some of your attention to it, but nothing more than that.

In the end, Beat Down: Fist of Vengence is incredibly annoying game, but it won't fail to entertain you while it does. At moments you will think the annoyance is too much for the entertainment it might provide, but at some other moments, you might be able to show enough paitience to enjoy all the small little things this game can provide. Again, although I said it is underrated, but it's not vastly underrated. This game is not trash, that's what I'm trying to say. If you are person of paitience and have the love for ol mindless beat-em-up type of games, you might find some enjoyable moments with this game. However, considering the those two traits are rarely in one person, I guess it won't be easy to find a person who would actually enjoy Beat Down: Fist of Vengence.
