Battletoads is a wacky action game that has all the makings of one of the best games ever, but it has a few problems.

Battletoads is the only game I have ever played where each level is completely different from the one before it, this game has the most varied levels of any game ever.

. This game looks excellent: the characters are large, there is very little slowdown (even on the really fast stages) and the animations are cool. The game sounds good and varied with vastly different music for each level. The game goes from a beat em up, to descending a cave on ropes, to avoiding obstacles on a speed bike and all the way to climbing a tall rotating tower. In theory, the game is perfect, since each level is different from each other but still fits with the overall game completely and is very fun to play.

. However, this perfection is only in theory. Starting at level three, most of the levels are massively difficult and require lots of practice and memorization to beat. That's ok because it does make the levels really rewarding to beat, but whenever you die and lose all your continues (which is often) you must restart from the beginning of the game and beat all the stages again to get up to the one you just died on. I don't think very many people are willing to spend this much time on any game, let alone a game this old. However, If you are willing to take the time, Battletoads is a great game to invest it in, even in the year 2006. If it had a stage select code, it would be perfect.
