Extremely popular, but not totally worth the effort...

There are few games that have the distinction of having the label of "unbeatable" branded to it, but Battletoads fits right in that group. Widely known as one of the most difficult games in history, it's no wonder that Battletoads leaves you feeling like the enemy rats in the game - beaten to a pulp.

While I'm not against games that are hard to master, there also needs to be a fair balance between difficulty and fun. Sure, the combat system is great and allows for the beat 'em up sequences to feel like you're actually connecting with your hits. Unfortunately, there comes a point in time where you do less button-mashing than controller-tossing.

The level design offers a decent amount of variety, ranging from side-scrolling levels where you punch and kick enemies off the screen (or into the ground) to fast-moving levels on a speeder that depend on reflexes rather than brute force. The game has enough different levels in it, but not all of them will appeal to anyone but the hardcore gamer.

While I found the first few levels of Battletoads a nice deviation from the norm, I couldn't help but be turned off by the focus of the game - to be extremely challenging instead of extremely fun and replayable.
