Rhythm based games can be fun and are even better when they're free.

User Rating: 7 | Audition Online PC
Since the late 90s, there's been more and more rhythm games hitting the markets. The success of Rock band or earlier games like Parappa the Rapper is a testament to the success of these games and Audition is another game along these lines but it is different in a few respects.

The point of the game is to match the keys that show up on the screen at the right time with the directional pad. Players can either choose 4 keys, which is the standard up, left, right and down directions or they can choose 8 keys. This add diagonals to the mix and is quite difficult. At earlier levels, the game is much slower and there may only be a few strokes at each step of the song. Once you've hit all the right keys in the right order, all you have to do is hit the space bar when the bar hits the right time. Sounds simple right?

But the game gets a lot more difficult as the game progresses. Some songs are really slow while others pile on the difficulty by going faster and faster. Compounding the problem, whenever you miss a key stroke, you have to start all over at the beginning and at higher levels, this basically guarantees that you will miss that part of the song, also disabling you from playing in the next round.

To spice things up even further, you can also chance it. This will increase the amount of points you can get but some of the keys will you show you the reverse key you have to input. Once again, it sounds simple but it's actually quite difficult.

The first aspect that makes it different is the fact that the game in mostly on PCs and has become hugely popular through the distribution of Nexon. Many versions of the game exist depending on where you live. The only problem with the amount of different versions is the incompatibility that each one has but each version has a lot of people at any given time so finding people to play with isn't a problem.

Logging on the first time, you'll be prompted to make an avatar. There are many modes that you can choose from. These can go from private rooms or you can select channels with players around your level so newbies don't totally get smoked against pros. As you level up through experience points, you'll get access to different rooms and more additions you can add to your avatar from pets, to clothes and other accessories.

It's also possible to play against the computer and try to get more experience points. Your team tries to defeat the computer and if it does, you get experience points. If you lose, everyone loses what was wagered. To prevent exploitation, the more you dance against a certain computer opponent, the less reward you will get for each consecutive match.

There are many other modes to play and you can play with many other players at the same time. Although the game doesn't change too much, you can purchase more accessories and access more songs as you continue to play and the track list and item list is always being updated.

It is also possible to buy accessories with real money or a version of the game with additional features. In the end, it's up to the user to decide if it's worth spending money. The game is a free download and because of that, it's definitely worth it. If you want to buy more things and accessories, at least you have the choice. If you're into rhythm games, and you're into quick downloads, pick this one up.
