Assassin's Creed rogue offers a great story while giving satisfying fans who want more Black Flag

User Rating: 8 | Assassin's Creed Rogue PS3

With Assassin’s Creed Unity coming out this year in addition to this installment, it’s likely that many people overlooked this game. Well, this is certainly an important installment and a great addition to a fantastic series with a wonderful story and returning characters from previous games.

Story: 8.75/10

Set as a sequel to Black Flag and a prequel to Assassin’s Creed 3, this game shows the other side of the assassin’s creed world; the Templars. Playing as Shay, you find that the assassin’s may not always have the best solution, so you join with the Templars to seek justice, and then stop your old friends from their destructive goals.

This installment also gives you A LOT of information regarding the modern day story as well. It will, however, require some puzzle solving to get to, but if you’re willing to put in the effort, the events of modern day will become much clearer to you.

Score: 8/10

This should have been the soundtrack that Black Flag had. Many of the songs give off a pirate vibe and seem more suited for the previous installment. That being said, this game does have a very good soundtrack with some memorable tunes.

Characters/Character Development: 9/10

This game provides some great character development. As Shay, you learn firsthand how much destruction something like an ancient artifact can cause and seek out ways to make it right and stop any more destruction from happening again. The emotions and drives of the characters all feel real. Old faces such as Adewale, Haytham Kenway and Achilles return to tie in the events of the American trilogy.

Graphics: 6.5/10

Even though this game looks like Black Flag, we have much better technology to enhance graphics by now. Although it is on the PS3, the game looks so very ‘last gen’. There’s also times when the game gets almost too dark to see where it is you need to be climbing which can cause a lot of confusion. Some climbing spots also look too similar to just ordinary walls only further confusing you at times.

Gameplay: 8.5/10

As far as gameplay goes, this game is pretty much just like Black Flag. There is a good amount of exploration and collectables added to keep you busy and making the world feel expansive.

Difficulty: 3 /10 (0 being the easiest, 10 being the hardest)

The game overall is pretty easy, especially when it comes to land combat. Making your way through dozens of guards will likely not even cause you to break a sweat and the fact that your health regenerates makes the fights feel almost too easy. Naval combat is a bit trickier and more of a challenge, but by the time you’ve upgraded your ship fully, not much will be slowing you down.

Fun: 7/10

This game is fun, but certain aspects of it are lacking. Traveling through the River Valley portion of the map does not provide much room for an open naval combat or freedom. It is more as though you are simply just sailing down it to reach a location. The only place that does provide an open world feel is in the North Atlantic, but compared to the map in Black Flag, this area does not feel very big.
