Zelda, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing Content Coming to Mario Kart 8 [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] Now with US pricing and other stage details.

UPDATE: Nintendo provided additional details for this Mario Kart update, which will be coming to the US as well.

Each DLC pack will cost $8 individually or $12 if you buy them together. And you'll be able to pre-order both packs starting tonight with v 2.0 update to the game.

If you pre-purchase both packs, you'll have immediate access to both the multi-colored Yoshis and Shy Guys. Though if you want to wait for any reason, the additional color options for those characters will unlock after you purchase the second pack.

A few of the new tracks you might notice from the images below are:

  • F-Zero track
  • Excitebike track
  • Animal Crossing track
  • Wario's Wood track

We don't have details for the tracks and karts not revealed by the images below, but Nintendo stated that this DLC will not include additional items, abilities, or multiplayer modes.

The original story appears below.

Mario Kart 8 is getting some substantial downloadable content starting in November. New characters, tracks, and karts will be added to the game featuring content from many of Nintendo's other franchises, including The Legend of Zelda, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing.

This content will come in the form of two DLC packs, which will include:

  • 3 new characters
  • 4 new vehicles
  • 8 new courses (some new, and some old)

Some of the new tracks will be set in Zelda and Animal Crossing locales, while Mario Kart Wii level Wario's Gold Mine makes a return.

The first of the two packs--The Legend of Zelda pack, coming this November--will include Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach as characters. The DLC will also include the Blue Falcon from F-Zero as a drivable kart as well as three additional unrevealed karts.

The second pack--the Animal Crossing pack, coming in May 2015--includes the Villager, Isabelle, and Dry Bowser. Nintendo did not reveal karts for this second pack. By buying both packs, which will be available individually for 7.00 GBP or in a bundle, you'll also get eight different colors for Yoshi and eight different colors for Shy Guy.

Details on the packs were posted to the Nintendo UK online store here and here earlier today. An image for the Zelda pack appears to show Excitebike and F-Zero levels, while the other pack shows off a new, Animal Crossing-themed stage.

We'll update this story with more details as they're available, but which of this content are you most excited to try? Are you happy to see Mario Kart supported with such extensive DLC? Let us know in the comments below.

I love more contents and online events, but not happy to pay much more for them. In the past we just play to unlock contents(characters, secret advantageous perks, modes, items, etc.), but now since nearly all of gaming companies have made it normal to nickel and dime on fractions of games. It is a bad news for gamers, especially when Nintendo has decided to follow suit. Mario Kart 8 doesn't have that much of a contents to begin with. In fact, I've beaten single player mode of the game on 100&150 cc within 5 days(less than 50 hrs. for sure, and acquired all golden cups). More serious gamers could probably get that done in less than half the time it's taken me.

Guessing this is how amiibos may be implemented. Buy a Samus figure and get the character for Mario Kart.

I won't be surprised if it is called Nintendo Cart 9 in future...

I'm absolutely enthralled by the idea of so much new content!  MK8 is easily the best in the series, and I was worried we'd need to wait for a new Nintendo system before seeing more MK goodness (historically they've never released 2 MK games on the same console).

I kind of expected new karts, but getting characters like Link is amazing.  And 16 new tracks?  My mind is just totally blown.  $12 well spent, IMO.

Ahh! The new characters and cups are on the select screens already! That's a real pet peeve of mine, just like Burnout Paradise. I don't mind them promoting it but putting them in the select screens is really invasive and annoying. Also, they're holding simple palette-swaps hostage for DLC pre-orders. On the plus side, the Mercedes-Benz DLC is optional. I mean, I got it, but it's good there's a choice.

I need to get me a Wii-U pro controller. As exciting as this all is, I really just can't wait for Zelda to get here next year. That game and UC4 will keep me playing for a long time.

Don't you just love the smell of Wii U emulator in the morning???

I really want some battle arenas, there is none and it's very disappointing.

This, friends and neighbors, is what DLC is SUPPOSED to be, and what it should have been all along before the Ubi's, EA's, and Activision's of the world tainted the concept with day one/on disc DLC and greed. Your knee jerk reaction might be "not you too, Nintendo", but do keep in mind that Mario Kart 8 will likely be the ONLY Mario Kart released this generation. There won't be a "Mario Kart: Revelations" or a "Mario Kart: Origins", or even a "Mario Kart: Generic Buzzword Subtitle" crammed down our throats every 9 months. Just Mario Kart 8 and a small, but generous, handful of additional tracks and other content for a small fee. As difficult as it may be to accept after an entire generation of DLC abuse, this, as far as Nintendo fans should be concerned, could only be a good thing.

Now the real question, will SSB4 have good DLC, bad DLC, or no DLC? I'm hoping for either the first or last option I don't want to see Nintendo IPs join CoD...

Finally, Mario Kart's starting to become more of a Smash kart. I hope there are Earthbound and Sonic packs in the future.

Those aren't bad price points at all. Other developers/publishers should learn a lesson from this.

hm does Mk8 not have any battle arenas?

6 new characters, 8 new vehicles, and 16 additional tracks for $13? 16 tracks! Four cups worth of courses!

The only question is if this will split the online community or if no-DLC players get to play against the new characters on new tracks in online only.

FLEEBS

I didn't care about this until I found out there are new tracks. I'm definitely going to purchase the DLC.

Still, I'd really like to see an update/DLC for Battle Mode. The current iteration is absolutely worthless.

Try Australia. It costs $16 just to get two bundles of joy. Not to mention the long waiting time but this is the first for Mario Kart 8.

I'm not a big fan of DLC, but $12 for this seems fair. My big concern for this DLC isn't the value, but the release dates. November? May? Are you kidding me? I 100% expect Smash Brothers to come out in November. Mario Kart 8 already became stale for me, and Nintendo is waiting far too long to try luring me back in with these distant dates.

jeepguy16

Other than some Rock Band songs, I have never bothered with DLC. However, I WILL be purchasing this. Anyone that plays Mario Kart should realize how good of a deal this is for 16 new tracks and several characters.

I was hoping for a battle arena pack, but I like what I'm hearing about this.

Nintendo.com says 11.99 for both. Man DLC is always a ripoff. I feel like I am ripping Nintendo off at that price.

jakefolk
jakefolk

This is such good news, I will be pre purchasing these both today. Another website said they both are 11.99 so I wonder if it is 11.99 or 12.99, not much of a difference and a great deal either way.

Wow. Nintendo , just release decent characters for your upcoming Smash Bros game.  It's the only thing that can save you npw

Nintendo and DLC should never be used in the same sentence.......Still a much better deal then some crappy COD maps everyone has already played in previous games.

16 new tracks for $12? SOLD. The extra characters and vehicles are icing on the cake.

How about a new F-Zero, or a new anything? Nope. Thanks Nintendo for reminding us why no one wants your shitty console.

Ok, the big question; where's the pc version?

Is it gonna be a bad console port as usual?

This DLC is looking good! Nintendo are making the right decision in making this DLC. I hope they do not make Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach seperate characters, though!

Wario's goldmine? Damn i hated that track on the Wii :P

They should return Baby Park from the GC with battlemode :P that was awesome.

mcmflyguy

@jerusaelem battlefield 4 has done almost this exact same thing... new maps, along with new guns, and new vehicles. So ya this is what DLC should be. My only thing is, I don't buy DLC for racing games, its pointless, the cars you have are just like the cars you'll buy except they look different. and the tracks alone are not enough for me to buy them.

sanchango
sanchango

@Celsius765 mk8 has "arenas" but they are better for multiple people. Playing locally will be boring. That's just me because the "arenas" are just shortened versions of existing race tracks. I use the term "shoretned" loosely because it's still relatively big that if you played locally, almost all the time you will be driving just to find the other player.

ArabrockermanX
ArabrockermanX

@Celsius765 I think so(I haven't checked out battle mode since I don't own a Wii U). I'd buy battle arenas with the return of Bob-omb blast mode from DD any day(if it is a good deal). I just hope they do it because more race tracks is great and all but battle was an awesome party game back in the Gamecube days. Don't even mention MK Wii's battle it was horrible...

sanchango

@elheber It's actually 12 dollars, Gamespot fixed it to the correct price.

ArabrockermanX
ArabrockermanX

@elheber They'll split the online community, although I think I read somewhere that they didn't allow DLC online for Mario Golf(need confirmation).

ArabrockermanX

@starcrafthenry At least we know they didn't remove content just to sell it back to us... If they done that I imagine it would have already been released.

@YouEnjoyMyFluff Sonic's still in. I doubt Ness will leave. I am kind of hoping they would announce Krystal as a fighter because of the potential she has as staff user. Besides the special attacks, the staff can yield some unique combo attacks.

@prats93  If I recall correctly, F-Zero games weren't the system seller games as Nintendo thought it would be.

sonyonly4

@prats93 Yep because Nintendo supporting a game that was selling systems reminds people they don't want it ?

@jemoedr Boy that track was a battlefield... It was always WAR! But I doubt they will add this, because it was already a classic track. :(

@mcmflyguy @jerusaelem  Let's hope DLC changes for the better.  It should always give you a nice amount of content for a reasonable price and not be "On-Disc/planned to milk and make you pay for a complete game"

jemoedr
jemoedr

@AndreasRufus @jemoedr I know right? Loved to play it with 4 friends, max laps, and making sure you had Bowser, Baby bowser, Donkey and Diddy Kong, and the koopa troopers in the mix :P

Total chaos :P
