Fighting in a dystopian, occupied USA.

Homefront: The Revolution has been through development trouble, but it's a real game. And today at Microsoft's Gamescom press conference, its single-player was shown off. In addition, Microsoft announced that Xbox One owners would get exclusive, early access to the game's cooperative mode.

Microsoft provided few details for the co-op, but it will feature players teaming up to form rebel cells to fight against occupying forces. The demo will be available this winter.

Homefront's gameplay demo showed off what players can expect from the single-player. Homefront: The Revolution takes place after the first Homefront game, which means that you play in a United States that's been occupied by North Korean forces. As a result, you essentially take control of an American nationalist rebel. It looks like an intriguing concept: you must play as an under-equipped soldier who is fighting back with what'll most likely be a group of American guerrillas, attempting to wrest control of the country away from North Korea.

And immediately the asymmetry between the North Korean troops and your character is apparent. During the demo, the main character uses a worn-out rifle that looked old and decrepit. In contrast, the North Koreans have high-tech vehicles and weaponry. But you also have access to some tools, such as an explosive, remote-controlled drone that you use to covertly take out a group of North Korean soldiers. You also ride a motorcycle around for increased mobility.

But the force asymmetry is still clear, and it will be interesting to see if Homefront: The Revolution can capitalize on that intriguing concept. If the developer can actually make the game tense, and require you to use guerrilla tactics to win, then this will be a shooter to keep an eye on.

Homefront: The Revolution launches in 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Watch GameSpot for more news from Gamescom all of this week.
