Xbox Music app hits iOS, Android

Microsoft brings music service to new devices and adds free ad-supported streaming through the Web.

An Xbox Music app is now available on iOS and Android, Microsoft announced today. In addition, the company has launched a free and ad-supported streaming option through Xbox Music on the Web.

Users with an Xbox Music Pass ($10/month or $100/year) can access the catalog's 30 million songs through their iOS or Android mobile devices and create an unlimited number of playlists through the new Web portal at music.xbox.com.

Unlimited free streaming is available through the Web for a period of six months.

Microsoft also laid out plans for the future, saying it will add Radio to the free Web player in the coming months and will introduce a Web Playlist tool for Xbox Music on Windows 8 on October 17 with the arrival of Windows 8.1.

On top of that, Microsoft said it will release additional updates for iOS and Android platforms, including a new offline mode that will allow users to save their music to their device, nullifying the need for Internet or a data connection.

I am definitely getting this because music is impossible to listen to or download for free now a days.

I got the Xbox music trial and I'm blown away. I downloaded 58 complete albums in 20 mins yesterday. I love it. I can stream it on my Xbox or listen on the iPhone app. Awesome

Is the Xbox music app as good as Spotify, MOG or Grooveshark?

i had google music for $8 a month but the UI got worse and worse.

Going to try this out, as I think MS eco system will grow more and more over the next year. One reason why XB1 is on my maybe list.

Really think the idea of naming MS's music service "Xbox Music" is unprofessional though. What if i dont game or dont care for Xbox.

Not sure why free pandora or lastfm are being compared to this. Not like i can choose any song i want, listen, download off line use, and play the songs i want to play using pandora and lastfm

why  bother with this when the far superior pandora is available

I see Microsoft is offering a product. Can't wait for the sony fanboys to come out and start spouting off how great their near-bankrupt Sony is.

Music apps are fine, but I'm not paying $10 a month for any of them. I'm already paying for the ripoff XM/Siruis radio. I'm about to cancel that.

Cool. Been getting some use out of the service since I got my Surface RT... had been hoping they would make a web app for it. Voila!

Hopefully they work on playlist/file management. That's always a bitch.

Wonder why they don't do a free streaming option with ads?

Oh right, because Pandora last.FM and several others already do this.

Unless Microsoft buys one of them out (like they did with Skype), I have no reason to jump ship and start paying for something I already stream for free.

I love how all the Sony fanboys are at it again.  They are complaining yet again.  So MS releases a music app.  How is this a bad thing?

@Blazen702 try spotify, already has the download function. Been using it for a year and it has an amazing library of songs and has a great 'Discovery' where it points you to new artists and not just the top found some really good small bands through it

@FULGOREY2K Quit talking out of your ass man, XBM let you listen a full album without ads or paying for it! Can Pandora do that?

@FULGOREY2K

Xbox Music allows you to play any song you want, not just listen to mixes and radio stations.

@moesuir First rule of making a point is being decent in grammar and at least try to make some sense.

@DVONvX Followed quickly by the Microsoft Defense Force whining about Sony fans

@DVONvX They both suck.  I don't think either company is about bankrupt.  Sony has it movie production to keep afloat unfortunately.

I only listen to Howard stern on my Sirius app

XbotSlayer221

@PixelAddict But But surely if you pay for it, it has to be better. For example, ust look at how much better Netflix is on xbot live compared to anything else its free on.. :)

Riddick123

@Darknight765 First off, we're not Sony fanboys.  Why would I pay for this when I can hook up my Android to my PC directly and put any song I want from it for free?  Now go pay your 100 dollars for this "service" and enjoy.

A_Rabid_Dog

@Darknight765 Because services like Spotify and Google All Access do it much better.

Plus, it's by microtransactionsoft. That automatically makes everything they do a sham.

@Dresden05 @Blazen702 .....blazens right spotify is amazing, why change. spotify gets better with each update. if they could partner up...(now thats an idea)

PixelAddict

@XbotSlayer221  Actually, truth be told, I do prefer the Netflix app on Live to other places.  Seems like the app on our Tivo Premieres lose audio/picture sync and the others (PS3, Wii) aren't much better.

Samsung's Tivo app isn't too, too bad.

Usually a person gets what they pay for, but i'll take the free Pandora app on Android any day of the week.  It's.. perfection.

Darknight765
Darknight765

@Riddick123 @Darknight765 Because that is called "stealing".  That is also the reason why they are trying to release software with DRM on it.  So next time you complain about stuff like that, remember they are making it just for people like you

Darknight765
Darknight765

@Riddick123 @Darknight765 It is new, I would personally wait about a year for them to get their library up.  It does let you try it for 6 months free I will give it a shot.

Riddick123
Riddick123

@Darknight765 @Riddick123 It probably includes all music.  I just already own the stuff I like.  I have very limited tastes.  I have yet to see Rammstein on Xbox either.

Darknight765
Darknight765

@Riddick123 @Darknight765 Oh god no, I like choice that aren't shit.  I agree with you on that.  If that is what the 30 Million song consist of I will go your route.

Riddick123
Riddick123

@Darknight765 @Riddick123 You assume I listen to 30 million songs.  I really don't care for the current music that is out today.  All of the songs and bands I care for I own.  No reason to add Lady Gag (yes Gag) or No Direction.  Thanks.  Hopefully you don't care for that shit either.

Darknight765
Darknight765

@Riddick123 @Darknight765 So, lets do some math here.  The song cost about $1.  You buy ten you just paid $10.  30 Million songs for $10 >10 songs for $10.  And, I don't consider myself a "genius" for figuring that out but a dumb ass troll like yourself might.  Thanks for playing.

Riddick123
Riddick123

@Darknight765 @Riddick123 Exactly, you figured it out.  Buy a few songs and play them for free.  You are a genius.  And yes I troll all the time.  Thanks for noticing.

Darknight765
Darknight765

@Riddick123 @Darknight765 So, by your logic the service is bad because you would rather buy a few songs and transfer them to your phone, than pay $10 and have access to 30 million?  Troll much?
