Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken out to congratulate Sony on launching the PlayStation 4, which will likely go down as the top-selling new console of 2014, despite the Xbox One closing the gap of late.

Reflecting on the first year of the Xbox One and PS4, Spencer said both platforms are off to a great start, even if Sony's machine performed better during the first 12 months.

The PS4 (Nov. 15) and Xbox One (Nov. 22) celebrated their first anniversaries earlier this month. In terms of sales, Sony has shipped 13.5 million PS4s, while Microsoft has shipped around 10 million Xbox Ones so far. As for the number of actual units sold through to consumers, Sony might have a 2:1 advantage, according to comments made by SCEA president Shawn Layden last week.
