Wind Waker HD's hero mode detailed

Nintendo says new game mode best suited for veteran Zelda fans who want a challenge.

by

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD will feature an all-new hero mode, Nintendo confirmed during a new preview of the upcoming Wii U title.

Nintendo product marketing manager Erik Peterson told GameSpot that the new hero mode is aimed at longtime series fans looking for a challenge.

"For those veteran Zelda fans, people who really love a challenge, hero mode is going to be great," Peterson said.

As part of the hero mode, all enemies will do double damage and no hearts can be found in the environment, Peterson explained.

This game mode, similar to the one from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, can be toggled on or off when a player loads up their save file. This will allow players to try out the advanced difficulty option without being locked in for their entire playthrough.

The hero mode was first revealed by an Amazon listing last month.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD launches in October. The game will be playable at PAX Prime next week.

I am pleased that they are doing something to increase the difficulty.  The 3D Zelda games should benefit from a bit more of  a challenge.  I'm not sure I like how they've implemented the increased difficulty, though.

Im so sad for brainwashed people that will go and spend around 300-350 or even more for a 2002 remake when most of PC users nowdays can play the original game on 1080p ( or whoever havent already ) and of course in a legal and way cheaper way ( own the original game ) .

Do i need to spend 300-400$. No i wont. This is really sad for sheeps.

They sure did put a lot of thought and effort behind creating that 'challenge' mode. I mean 'hero' mode.

At least new players that never got to play the gamecube version will be able to see why this game was so awesome, despite it being cel-shaded and starting off rather slow.

All for $60 because it took a LOT of time, almost 6 months, to upscale all those old pixels to shinier, still looks practically the same but smoother, Zelda game.

WHAT'S OLD IS NEW AGAIN

Just waiting for new Zelda and a Metroid. Not holding my breath for a real sequel to Starfox/Starfox 64 but I can still hope at least.

On the bright side, if these Wii U owners aren't completely retarded, they'll buy up "Wonderful 101" and support a truly awesome game so they can make more original shit like that for the system.

I'm not even sure why they call this game series Legend of Zelda when all she really do is pop out and tell you the world in danger then you hardly hear anything about her till your at the end... You don't even play as Zelda, Legend of Link would be a better fitting title.

Windwaker is my favorite Zelda game but since I still own the GC original is this really enough new content to warrant a purchase I'm sure it will get high ratings across the board but is it fair not to judge it to today's standards hell most games that don't have voice acting get rated bad and other rehashes of games get lower ranks I don't see why this is not reviewed fairly compared to other games from company's other than Nintendo I bet heavy story drives games without great voice acting get knocked down yet Zelda games do not impartial fairness goes out the windows when's its Zelda, I don't see why they don't truly bring it to the next level voice acting, sandbox world, tight combat and controls, it took Nintendo almost the whole lifespan of the Wii to do all the motion controls they promised with twilight princess into skyward sword I'm just asking for fairness and impartiality reviewing. Is that fair to be biased yet to one series where is the journalistic truth you said journalist and if this is a HD remake or update will it be judged fairly if it is up to being compared other HD Remakes

Instead of a hero mode, why didn't they just make a Master Quest version like they did with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask? Simply adding a mode removing hearts from the environment doesn't sound like a big enough change to gameplay to warrant paying the price they are asking.

I loaded Wind Waker yesterday for the first time in a few years. This new version does look a whole lot better than I first thought.

WW has this weird blurring effect that I'd never noticed until I played it yesterday. Everything more than a few meters away is all blurry and comes into focus as you walk towards it. Perhaps it has something to do with the game running on the Wii? IDK, but I don't remember Outset Island looking so blurry when I played it on Gamecube.

Won't be buying this game BUT i loved WW and glad they are adding in a hero mode because it was way to easy, just like all zelda games since ALTTP

like I'm paying 50$ for one of the worst zelda ever just because it has bloom and a 'hard' mode....

Well just to bad the whole game cannot be played through in 1rst person mode. Not interested anymore.

I've beaten this game around 12 times. I think my first playthrough of the HD remake will be on Hero mode, lol.

At this point I'd be glad if they just stopped releasing Zelda games for a generation or two.

I hate this unspoken rule that every nintendo console NEEDS a Zelda game. Nevermind that it gets stale as hell...

Look what a generation of abscence did for metroid! It allowed them to try new things!

But... you gotta tend to the fans' every whim I guess...

Yes I finally got my Wii U back from the repair centre, hopefully I'll get the Gamepad and everything is above aboard, no more wireless interference, no more problems and I can get on and enjoy this console and the wonderful games on it and the upcoming games like Zelda WindWaker HD.

As much as I would like to be financially able to buy this game with a Wii U, I'm still hoping against hope that a Majora's Mask HD remake gets made someday, as that was always my favorite Zelda.

Still not worth the asking price. I'll consider the game when it's $30.

And BTW in my opinion Zelda is not RPG is action adventure why everyone saying that is RPG in RPGs you level up you can wear armors use weapons i mean not only one this mean RPG

Yomigaeru

I was expecting something more like Master Quest, where the dungeons were rearranged. It seems like a better fit than a "very hard" difficulty in a series where combat is largely secondary.

ArabrockermanX

They could have incorporated the removed dungeons in some form with more bosses... That would make this a must have for anyone that liked the original.

Well call me impressed, I have never seen anything like Hero Mode in a game before; oh wait its called hard/impossible/zealot/very hard etc difficulty. Congratulation Nintendo, once again making so much hoopla about dong so little.

Wind Waker is my all time favorite Zelda game, but I'm still enjoying it with my Wii/ Wavebird combination.

@AzatiS Whatever man.  I HATE playing games on computer and never played this game and already own the Wii U AND have the cash to spend, wait, why am I defending myself to someone whose viewpoint I care nothing about.  Good day!

@AzatiS Im so sad for misinformed people that will not go and enjoy this game because they think it's a "remake". Yes, it is the same game but not only is it graphically superior but they also realigned the flow of the game as well. They also made it easier to control as well. This is the definitive version of the "original game". A must have for a TRUE ZELDA FAN..since 1986.

@AzatiS I'm sorry, but I just found your comment very rude. I'm looking forward to this, and because of that I don't have a mind of my own?

Upscaling the resolution of the GameCube game won't make it look as good as this Wii U version.

u1tradt

@telaros I recently played WW on Dolphin at 2560x2112 IR with all the bells and whistles (8xAA etc.), which looks gorgeous I might add, and I can tell you Nintendo's HD remake still looks so much better.

The textures have been redone, not upscaled, to fit the Wii U's resolution.

Also I have to disagree that the game was 'awesome despite being cel-shaded'. Looking at how well the game has aged would suggest that one of the reasons the game was awesome was because of the cel-shading.

Nevermind, I saw elsewhere that they are actually adding new features. Dammit, Gamespot! Get your info straight!

@x-2tha-z Did you play it on an HD TV? All standard def games on last gen consoles look terrible on HD for some reason

GameBeaten

@ristactionjakso I wouldn't be surprised if Zelda U had that feature. There has already been rumors of the next Zelda being inspired by Skyrim.

19James89

@Simulator_Shock I doubt they'll re-release it, the only reason they released Wind Waker in HD because this was their experimental project in getting to grips with High Definition.

@corrus well RPG stands for Roll Playing Game so...... technically many games fit that criteria.

justinka777
justinka777

@Yomigaeru I thought they were doing something with the triforce collecting (like putting in a dungeon for it not sure). however I am looking forward to the hero mode, I remember that I never needed to carry potions since there were always hearts sitting in a jar nearby. now I will need to take stock of my items before I attempt any larger dungeons.

@kiramasaki They never said they were doing a lot, dork face. this is a remake with features not previously incorporated in the original game, end of story.

@barkingschnitzl me too. i can't justify buying a wii u just for that. they should have did an hd remake of twilight princess and packaged them together.

@gamerboy100 The enemies do DUBLE damage. That's what zelda needs, with this the game could be a little more challenging aside the puzzles.

u1tradt

@Britanga @x-2tha-z I think it's because on old box TVs the native resolution was usually around 360-480p whereas HDTVs are 720p minimum which means that the Wii (480p max) has to be upscaled to fit the screen.

@x-2tha-z You should probably look up if playing it on Wii has that effect. Personally I would recommend playing it on PC anyway. If you have a decent dual core processor you should be able to play the game on 720p native res no problem.

WW is surprisingly one of the less resource-hungry games for GC so a fairly average PC by today's standards should run it with absolute ease.

x-2tha-z
x-2tha-z

I was playing it on a HDTV. I'm sure the last time I played on GC was also on a HDTV. I've had a HDTV since late 2005. Perhaps the blurring was more noticeable because I was using component cables on Wii instead of RGB scart on GameCube? IDK.

u1tradt
u1tradt

@justinka777 @corrus It's become a somewhat grey area but conventionally speaking Zelda games aren't RPGs. It may stand for Role Playing Game but the games that pioneered the genre have a specific formula and rules.

If we were to take the term RPG literally as you suggest then every single game would be an RPG since you're always assuming the role of someone or something in any game.

Yomigaeru
Yomigaeru

@coreyrobbins @barkingschnitzl I would've just liked an HD remake of Twilight Princess. As it stands, it just seems like it's unnecessary to have two versions of that game in spite of the fact that the Wii version has the 'better' aiming controls and is mirrored horizontally.

kiramasaki
kiramasaki

@coreyrobbins @barkingschnitzl Majora's Mask is my favorite but Waker is a close second, but I just can't see them doing anything with it barring new story content that would make we want to buy a console to play it.

Shadow_Fax
Shadow_Fax

@Branmuffin316 @Shadow_Fax @Icepick_Trotter Well, the example of Metroid is not a good one in my opinion. I mean, the absence of Metroid from N64 is not being used in the same context as a Zelda absence.

The last Metroid game on a home console before Prime was Super Metroid on SNES. Zelda (and Mario) took the same jump from 2D to revolutionary 3D without the need for an "absence" from a home console. In this regard, Nintendo had already found the way to reinvent their games from the SNES days to the new 3D age; Metroid was just not made until the GC days.

u1tradt
u1tradt

@JimmeyBurrows @u1tradt Clearly you do. You may not have a character or name but your role is to drop the shapes down the screen and clear as many lines as you can.
