Will EA release a new Battlefield game in 2014?

Unconfirmed reports abound, as analyst says if there is a new Battlefield game next year, DICE won't be the developer; could it be Criterion?

Electronic Arts management has informed gaming business analyst Michael Pachter that if there is a new Battlefield game in 2014, it won't come from series steward DICE.

"Although they have not yet announced a version of Battlefield for FY:15, they confirmed that our understanding is spot on and that if a version of Battlefield were to be released in FY:15, it would be developed by a studio other than DICE," Pachter said in a note to investors obtained by Kotaku.

For reference, EA's fiscal year 2015 runs April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015.

If it's not DICE developing 2014's Battlefield game, who could it be? It was suggested today that Burnout developer Criterion Games had been enlisted for the job. Writing on Twitter today, studio head Alex Ward did not deny this, but instead said, "I'm not in a position to comment." Criterion may be best known for creating the Burnout series, but the United Kingdom studio also developed 2006's PlayStation 2 and original Xbox FPS Black.

Separately, Pachter told Eurogamer that Dead Space 3 developer Visceral Games is a likely candidate for the job. Visceral Games' only confirmed project currently is a new Star Wars title as part of EA's wide-ranging deal with Disney that makes the game publisher the exclusive creator of Star Wars games through 2023.

DICE, which is a multi-team studio, has a number of projects on its hands already. In addition to additional Battlefield 4 expansions, the studio is working on an all-new Mirror's Edge game and a new Star Wars: Battlefront title.

With the Medal of Honor series now out of rotation, some have suggested that EA would elect to annualize the Battlefield series, similar to Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty. However, CFO Blake Jorgensen explained last month why doing so could be problematic from a business and creative perspective.

"You also want to be really careful that you don’t destroy the franchise along the way," Jorgensen said at the time. "You've got to make it exciting and different, but at the same time you want to make sure you maintain a great franchise." He also explained that core Battlefield games can't be developed in under two years, necessitating that development be spread across at least two studios.

We've reached out to EA for comment.

Activision will deliver a new Call of Duty game in fall 2014, and EA will presumably launch a product alongside it. What the game is, however, remains to be seen.

Battlefield 4 premium player here. (also BF3 premium, BC2 and BC2:Vietnam).

Don't give your money to Battlefield games anymore. I did it with this last Battlefield and it was a mistake. We, the players, are still beta-testing the game for them after three months since release. They don't care because our money is in their bank accounts, so they only say "it's your internet fault, it's your rig fault, it's your console fault, it's your grandma fault". They are absent from forums and only appear to block topics or ban users, never to give you a hint of what's happening with the game you paid for.

Giving the next BF to another studio does nothing, because EA wants the game to be released in a given date at all cost (after all, preorders will give them enough money). IT happened this time with DICE, but will happen whatever studio they hire.

And, even if you don't believe me, please, don't preorder. Wait and read users reviews after release. Don't trust in most review websites (gamespot is OK, XD), because they are usually forced by publishers to give good reviews and only say the truth after release, when it can't be hidden.

EA investors even started a file suit against EA for hidding the real status of the game prior to its release.

that just sounds terrible more FPS, lets make a game that we don't have to think about i know lets make a FPS loads of randomly placed guys you shoot that start to look alike and you kill some guy at the end who trying to take over America. easily written garbage story line

Battlefield every two years is bad enough. Annualized puts it as low as other series that need not be named.

If another non-Dice BF is released I doubt it's worth playing, but from what I've heard of BF4 it seems that *it* isn't worth playing either. At least until it gets more stable and bug free. I always think that it's useless to ask these questions or speculate, because either it will happen or it won't. We'll see.

I think EA would be making a massive mistake by annualising Battlefield releases. It may earn them short-term profit, but in the long-term a lot of gamers will get fed up of buying Battlefield year in year out and sales will slump.

Not that support an annual release of Battlefield, but if this is true, would the new game run on Frostbite 3?

Keep release spread out! Allow Dice to make a finished and great game! You know for a fact the fans will buy it over the competition if it is a quality product, not if you sink to their level.

I think BF4 has the potential to be an amazing game. DICE need to work to resolve the issues and it could be an amazing series again. I think EA are pushing DICE too much to spit these games out to make EA more money. even though BF4 isn't great I wouldn't want another company making BF games, as someone previously said, DICE can make these classics.

I would hate it for BF to be released every year.

So does this "confirms" that a new bad company is on the way ? they said dice didnt have time for the crew but that the crew wasnt forgotten.

I've played Black and if Crit can use creative minds to make a fresh feel to battlefield with next gen quality I have faith. But if EA starts spitting out battlefield games left and right I'm gonna get burnt out on the franchise just like I did with call of duty.

Patcher makes the most vaguest of statements that calling him an 'analyst' would be akin to calling a doomsday prepper a futurist.

Half the crap he comes out with is just wrong, whilst the other is blatantly obvious.

In this case, no of course there won't be a BF5 next year, EA have repeatedly said it won't become an annual series and they aren't so out of touch with the gaming community they'd be that stupid. The idea of Critereon being handed the BF franchise is just absolutely idiotic in itself.

They do racing games. A Pod Racing SW game would be much more likely.

They (EA) already said they wouldn't be doing one in 2014... so... yea.  And no one is going to buy a shooter made by criterion... where do they get this crap from!?

Please don't even try to give Battlefield franchise to any developers, but DICE. Just have DICE make what they want and we'll have masterpieces everywhere, but EA well... being EA. That's far from ever happening now.

I wouldn't mind a Criterion developed Bad Company 3.

I'm not supporting annual releases, but if they are to release a new BF game next year it would be unfair to burden DICE with developing it while they're still developing Battlefield 4.

With how bad the new MOH games were, I really expected something like that to happen after the end of MOH.

Dice are being made the scapegoats here if this article has any veracity.  The pressure that publishers like EA exact on the development houses is proportional to the standard of the game on release.  Its not Dice who should lose out here, but EA.   If I was head of Dice I would now be looking to do an Infinity Ward bale out, tell EA to go screw and start a new independent team like Respawn and sign up with MS.  Just a thought!

nurnberg

It would not surprise me one bit.  They rushed an unfinished BF4 to the market, so they don't care about the quality of the franchise anymore.  All they care is selling copies, no matter how bad and buggy the game is.  That mentality fits well with a yearly release.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

God lets hope not. If they couldn't even release a completed game in the last development period making one every year will be like playing a game still in Alpha-stage.

They were my last hope. EA, if you read this, there is a reason I don't like Call of Duty.

EA already lost me as a customer when I figured out they are planning to have the same business modal as Activision. Just another franchise EA ruined over the years.

When bf3 was fully optimized and had been released with all DLC, bf4 was released about 4 months later.

I didn't buy  bf4 and won't be buying it until i can buy the full game (with all DLC/bonuses/weapons/maps/etc.) for 39$, which should be about 6-8 months until a new bf game... Which at this point I will probably have lost all interests and move on to better games.

If they start spamming BF every year im out and won't support this franchise anymore. A bf title should be released once every 3 years with huge improvement on its predecessor.

Maverick6585

@nl_skipperI thought it was DICE, not EA, who said they wouldn't release a new Battlefield in 2014, and that yearly releases would kill the game.

@Davhut i agree they need more control and to tell ea to swivel but IW are not a good example of what to do they left activision and went to ea then  without their say had there game made m$ exclusive

battlefield was never set up with a campaign until recently, if you played bf1942-bf2 you would know that. They use to have a great formula with the battlefield series and lately they've been fucking it up.

No they arent, operation metro is huge fan favorite, even though i personaly dont like it. Then you have middle east market map, caspian border on PC on consoles they prefer firestorm.

people also linke the artic one for capture points, pipeline sth i guess, and the grinding map for level up  nohsval cannal.

So yah, you can have fun with vanilla bf3, bf4 i only liked one map so far, and im waiting for the revamped bf3 maps and hopefully something worthy on the dlcs of premium that i refuse to aquire before they are done.
