Weekly Wrap-Up: Aloha Edition

It's time for the weekly wrap-up. Join us as we say good-bye to Sophia Tong.

The Recap

GameSpotter's Contributions
This week's Blog Bunker didn't have too many people on the same page. But, that means it was packed with many kinds of flavors and opinions! The Gameflicks report had one game on the minds of the video creators, Battlefield 3! The Player Reviews also had some games in common, like Gears of War 3, The Witcher, and Renegade Ops, but there were some older games like Super Meat Boy and Devil May Cry considered for a review.

Field Trip
For this week's field trip, we drop by Capcom, Bethesda, Sega, Blizzard, Activision, and EA to see what they have going on in their communities. Find out why ponies are becoming the next big thing, get a pizza recipe, and learn how to win stuff!

Dark Souls Shirt Giveaway
Earlier this week on Twitter and Fuse, Synthia gave away a bunch of Dark Souls shirts to those who could give her the names of the classes you choose from in Dark Souls, Who were the winners? Paul S., Justin P., Pete L., Karl D., Jeff X., James G., and Travis B. Congrats guys!

This Is Halloween
It's GameSpot community manager Synthia's all-time favorite time of year. The leaves are turning, scarves and jackets are back in fashion, and there is a plethora of candy in the office! Be sure to keep your eyes out for some spook-tacular Halloween activities in the coming days.

Member Spotlight

This week's Member Spotlight shines on music_guru for his heartwarming tribute to Sophia by sharing some of his favorite "Things I Put on Baily's Head" moments.

Union of the Week

This week's featured union goes to the All-Out Nintendo. This union has been around since early 2009 and is still very active. It deals with any and all things involving Nintendo, be it the people who work there, the company, the history, or the games. It is filled with a devoted officer team that cares deeply for their union. I had the pleasure of having an interview with former GameSpot spotlight member Cloud_765 about the union. For those interesting details, check out this page here.

Tip of the Week

You can win awesome games and prizes by checking out and submitting videos to our Big Shot Bounty on the GameSpot YouTube channel! This week, it's a racing-themed Xbox 360 bundle. For more details, mosey on over to this page here.

Activity

Earlier this week, we talked with Kevin VanOrd about his experience with Dark Souls, and after sharing a few words of wisdom, we at the GameSpot community started to wonder. What sagelike advice would you offer to someone new to this despicably dark dungeon delver? Comment below with a tip or comment on the video for some profile points. Check out the video here!

Saying Good-Bye

Let's face it: It's never easy to say good-bye, especially when you're saying it to someone who means so much to you. Today is Sophia Tong's last day here in the GameSpot office, but she'll always be a part of GameSpot. We put together this little video with some heartfelt messages, as well as funny Sophia moments. We'll miss you Sophia. Don't be a stranger!

My tip: Take it slow and get used to it. It is a tough game, but patience and composure are key!

The weekly field trips is a nice new feature :) I don't know much about Dark Souls, but I should consider getting it after all the praise it got. I've played plenty of challenging games, but I've never been unable to complete a game because of how hard it was...so the difficulty of the game (and the apparently creepy atmosphere) won't scare me (of course, a game guide helps). Speaking of scare...I wonder what's up for halloween...?

About Dark Souls... never rush into something there, you get killed before you even know what you did wrong. The game wants you to be prepared to die, act accordingly.

Farewell Sophia :'( I'll give 5 tips for Dark Souls:- 1. You're supposed to die. Get used to it. Now learn from your mistakes. 2. If you can, use the lunging aerial strike on bosses. 3. Get the Heal spell as soon as you can. 4. Get a shortbow (or crossbow) as soon as you can. Also, pulling. 5. Don't kill the merchants.

For Dark Souls, players really have to learn to be defensive, going out on all out offense killing spree won't work. Using defense such as your shield is a really good idea. Also knowing your enemies attacks and how to defeat them effectively helps as well. It is definitely a bad idea to rush through the game, so enjoy the game, level up, and take it slow. ;)

I would say keep at it. You ARE going to die. Just be calm and get through it.

Wow, thanks for the Member Spotlight! However, I'm more thankful that I was able to put together a nice little tribute to Sophia. I wish her well and I'm glad people were touched by it.

That's a nice farewell video. We'll all miss her. Dark Souls tips eh... Use your shield as much as possible, and don't try to fight more than one enemy at a time. Learn enemy attack patterns and become proficient at backstabbing. Take your time and do some soul farming to level up.

real advise or pretend advise - because I advise to turn around and run the other way, and I will even lead the way on that one ;) this music is so random in this video :) does this also mean we'll see pranks this month, @Synthia ? ups to Darthkaiser and music_guru for the recognition - certainly well deserved!

My Dark Souls advice would be this - be nice & helpful with any messages you leave on the ground. The games hard enough already without misleading messages!! Well done @music_guru and good luck @Sophia

Goodbye Sophia :( Dark Souls tip make sure to empty out your equiped items to be able to move faster, use a mixture of magic and melee for an easier experience.
