Ridley Scott's upcoming space adventure The Martian comes to cinemas in October, and ahead of that a new trailer has been released.

The film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut fighting for survival after a massive dust storm leaves him stranded on Mars with only a few weeks of supplies left. Back on Earth, a team of NASA scientists try to figure out how to bring him home, while his former crewmates hatch their own dangerous mission to rescue him. Check out the trailer below.

In an interview with Collider, Damon explained how The Martian would differ from similarly themed films such as Mission to Mars or Red Planet. "One of the biggest differences is that it's primarily me on my own for a lot of it, and that's a big challenge," he said. "It's got all the bells and whistles of NASA and the whole B-side of the story is the rest of the world trying to get this guy back. But the other half of the movie is me and Ridley on Mars.

"Hopefully we're making the definitive Mars movie, at least for now."

The Martian was adapted from Andrew Weir's novel by Daredevil writer/producer Drew Goddard, and the star-packed cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Kristen Wiig. It will be released on October 2, 2015.
