Watch Dogs delayed to spring 2014

[UPDATE] "From the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality," Ubisoft says; Amazon and GameStop release statements on bundle orders.

[UPDATE] Amazon and GameStop have issued statements about what the Watch Dogs delay means for people who have preordered the game and/or a console bundle.

"For those of you who pre-order the Watch Dogs PlayStation 4 bundle—don't worry—you will still be getting your Playstation 4 (without Watch Dogs) based on your current delivery estimate. We are adjusting the orders now and will update you once we know more," Amazon said.

Meanwhile, a GameStop representative provided a statement to IGN on the matter.

"With the news that Ubisoft has delayed the release of the highly-anticipated title Watch Dogs until next year, GameStop is contacting customers who had reserved PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bundles featuring the game. Customers can elect to keep their current bundle orders and their consoles will ship as scheduled with the game shipping separately once it is available or customers can choose another bundle to replace their current order. Customers should also note that there may be a difference in the price if selecting another bundle and that all reserved orders will be charged upon shipment."

The original story is below.

Ubisoft's next-generation open-world game Watch Dogs has been delayed to spring 2014. The game was previously scheduled to launch in November for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, and Wii U.

"Our ambition from the start with Watch Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming," Ubisoft said in a statement. "It is with this in mind that we've made the tough decision to delay the release until spring 2014."

"We know a lot of you are probably wondering: Why now? We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality," the developer added. "As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience."

Sony previously announced a special Watch Dogs PS4 bundle for the United Kingdom. With the game now delayed into 2014, an Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "Our partnership with Sony remains strong and we will have more details to share about the specific benefits of this partnership for PlayStation customers at a later date."

Regarding North America, the Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "If you have pre-ordered a Watch Dogs bundle in North America please contact your retailer for your options."

Ubisoft also delayed racing game The Crew today, pushing that title to sometime in the company's upcoming financial year. This means the earliest the game could be released is April 1, 2014.

"Our long-term goal is to win the next generation. The tough decisions we are taking today to fully realize the major potential of our new creations have an impact on our short-term performance," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "We are convinced that, longer term, they will prove to be the right decisions both in terms of satisfaction for our fans and in terms of value creation for our shareholders. We are building franchises that will become perennial pillars of Ubisoft's financial performance. In a context of growing successes for mega-blockbusters, the additional time given to the development of our titles will allow them to fulfill their huge ambitions and thus offer players even more exceptional experiences."

As a result of the two game delays, Ubisoft has lowered overall company sales targets for the year. The publisher is now expecting between €995 million and €1,045 million in sales for the year, compared to prior targets of sales between €1,420 million and €1,450 million.

Ouch ! Wow, i knew holding off to reserve the PS4 wasn't a bad thing. This was my the number one game i had in mind for my new PS4. Now i'm unsure what is the big game out with the console ?

Good for them. I will always side with a dev for choosing quality over quick sales. Good on you Ubisoft.

Looks like the release date is now June 30, unless they're now giving a bigger window.

Why does Ubisoft and the rest of these a-hole developers wait until a month before release to inform gamers of delays. seriously the games are usually ready for printing at that stage. pure assholes....all of them.

Hmm, where have I seen Ubisoft delay a game for a new console with just a few weeks notice before? Oh yeah, that's right, with the new Rayman game earlier this year. Another article on Gamespot is about how poor that game did. Ubisoft is just making friends left and right. lol.

So i pre-ordered my Ps4 watchdogs edition so I get the ps4 and not watchdogs on Nov 15th? I'm okay with that since AC4 and KZSHF is comnig w/ my ps4

Well, normally I have no issues with delays.

However, when this game was bundled with next-gen consoles on launch day it is a colossal mess. Surely Ubisoft knew it wasn't ready and decided to wait just over a month to release a half-hearted statement? Absolute joke.

I wasn't going to go next-gen til the game line up improves and this has only justified my decision further to continue buying games that I have previously missed to catch up and play on my PS3 and 360.

Might not go next gen straight away as I had planned to. Out of all the next gen games I am only interested in Battlefield 4 and KZ SF. Might put it on hold until spring myself until more games are available

That is a long ass delay considering it was supposed to come out in a few weeks.

Look at the bright side. Ubisoft will have more time to polish this game so it won't feel rushed.

This could backfire.  If Rockstar times their GTA V PC release at around that time then it could potentially eat up PC sales of Watch Dogs.

Pushes Definitely PS4 purchase to next year. I wanted to the PS4 early just for Watchdogs. Other titles like AC4, or BF3, it's ok to play them on PC.

Great, now we PC owners have to wait 'til SUMMER 2014.

Delay is another way of saying perfecting their product people. Remember Far Cry 3 was delayed as well and look how well that turned out,  "Patience is a virtue"

It was delayed to allow Assassin Crap 4 to succeed, which it won't. And also it shows the fear that GTA 5, puts into all the other inferior developers. It scares the shit out of them.

Seems like the ps4 version will sell better than the xbone version.  So many people were getting it for ps4 it seems.

Wow! I was really hoping I was going to play this game at least for christmas time. I guess my money will go to another game then. I hope they are not doing it for the sake of assasins creed black flag, because that is one game I am not planning to get at launch (at a latter time I might).

There are other games that are being delayed, and by the time they come out, I don't know if I will be as impressed or interested. New games are announced everyday, one trying to best the other, and what is impressive now, it will not be a year from now. That's my opinion.

I knew Drive Club was going to be delayed. I have been saying that for awhile. It looks like a game that incomplete. Watchdog's delay was a surprise though, but hopefully the game will be a lot better.

Sony and Microsoft: Heyyyyyy Ubi! What's going on man? Listen. We have a favor to ask.

Ubisoft: Oh, God. What do you want now?

S & M (not that kind): Whoa! What's with all the hostility?! I thought we were friends!

Ubisoft: Look. Just tell me what you want.

S & M: Right to the point as always, Ubi! I like your style. Okay so we were thinking: You know that Watch Dogs game you're working on right now?

Ubisoft: Yeah...

S & M: Well, we were wondering - Awesome game , by the way. It looks great! - Would it be possible for you to simply tell people that the game is coming out at launch so we can boost our console preorders a bit?

Ubisoft: What are you, nuts? The game isn't even close to being ready for that timeframe. Besides, why would we want to sell our game so close to the GTA V release?

S & M: No. You don't get it. We just want you to PRETEND it's coming out for our launches. Think you can do that for us, buddy?

Ubisoft: *Sigh*....fine. So when should we announce this "pushback" to early/middle of next year?

S & M: Oh don't worry! You can announce it WELL in advance.

Ubisoft: How well in advance?

S & M: 4-5 weeks before launch.

Ubisoft: HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?! Our shareholders would LYNCH us!

S & M: Okay. You're angry. We get it. But we need those console preorders. You need us to have those preorders so you can sell more of your games. We're just looking out for YOU, buddy. We wouldn't ask you this if it wasn't important.

Ubisoft: I swear to God: I'm going to regret this.

Just a fun conspiracy theory.

They probably diverted all the staff towards AssCreed IV. I mean the game is like a religion to them.

I went to their office once and the sheer amount of assassin's creed stuff that's on display there, you'd think you're actually in Ezio's wardrobe.

Couldn't care less. I don't buy third-party games anymore. Only Sony exclusives matter now. Sony have set the bar really high with their exclusives on PS3. PS4 will, no doubt, be another platform filled with their best content. : )

Ubisoft realized that GTA V set the bar for many things in the sandbox genre, its understandable, I can wait, no problem.

@noandno All major franchise releases should have a two year or longer development cycle, it simply creates better games and I will argue anyone on that point.

GTA V is a mess.

Kooken58

@Queuingreturns @BFKZ Was a mess, just like most online launches. Also they took a risk with using this whole new cloud thing which turned out to be complete crap at the start.  And really, GTA's focus typically isnt online. The game has always been about the singleplayer.

@Queuingreturns True, multiplayer is a mess, but you cant say the same for single player.

Nothing.

Not even BF 4 can touch it.

Yes. The Big N. Already out of the console race. All that's left is the handheld. That won't last long too.

As for the games. ANOTHER Zelda game? ANOTHER Mario game?

Geez. Your fanboyism puts mine to shame. LOL.
