US PC game charts: August 27- September 2

Most recent weekly top 10 from NPD yields a Sims 2 four-way, a dethroned World of Warcraft, and a resurgent Starcraft: Battle Chest.

Prior to the week of August 27 to September 2, World of Warcraft had ruled the weekly NPD PC bestseller charts for a month straight. It was the latest round in the game of top-slot switcheroo that Blizzard Entertainment's game had been playing with Electronic Arts' The Sims 2. The two titan PC titles have consistently remained in the top 10 since their release in 2004, the latter fast becoming a franchise on par with the original Sims thanks to its various expansion packs.

Though the Sims 2 finished in third place during the week--right below WOW--the Sims 2 brand came up on top again, thanks to a new add-on for the lifestyle simulator. The Sims 2: Glamour Life Stuff took over the number-one slot in the week following its release, just as The Sims 2: Family Fun Stuff--this week's 10th-place game--did when it was released April. Neither "Stuff" title is a full-fledged Sims 2 expansion like Open for Business, which finished in ninth place, or earlier expansions Nightlife or University. Instead, they just add new items for Sims 2 characters to use, including clothes and interior decoration.

Meanwhile, down in fourth place, THQ's movie-based minigame compilation Cars: Radiator Springs kept up its surprising pace. Perhaps even more surprising was what title was on its tail. Fifth-place game Starcraft: Battle Chest has rocketed back onto the charts seven years after it was first released, thanks in large part to its low nationwide average retail price of $12. (Note: Average prices are determined by NPD sales surveys, and actual suggested retail price may vary.)

Meanwhile, down in sixth was last week's top game, NFL Madden 07 from EA Sports. Then came the children's adventure title Nancy Drew: Danger By Design, topping the ever-popular Roller Coaster Tycoon 3: Gold, which bundles the original Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 with its Soaked! expansion pack.

Falling out of the chart during the week of August 27 to September 2 were two titles from 2K--Civilization IV and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion--and another resurgent retro-RTS comp, Warcraft III: Battlechest.

The users cannot upgrade their PC's as fast as game req. evolve. Also the main buyers are families, and ratings take their part in sale numbers. WOW, sims, other stuff is like for everyone, but more agressive titles are with close to mature rankings, and none parent wants his child to become people shooter wanabee.

I can't belive that World of Warcraft is still on this list; it's one thing that people are playing this game, but that people are still buying this game in retail is beyond me.

So Prey Isn't even on the list? I just finished playing it and it was one of the best games I played. About Starcraft being on the list , Blizzard should make Starcraft current like WC3,better graphics, etc. That's a good game!!

I think this is actually slowing starcraft 2 production down. They see people still buying a 7 year old game, so why should they dethrone it with Starcraft 2? It's like if you see Game I and Game II on the same shelf, and they're both online games, of course you're going to choose II.

It's also because sales are very low, so it does not take much to get to No.1 and No.2 because the titles below it are barely selling at all. Not that we'd be told, because the gaming business is allowed to be much more secretive than the movie, TV or even book publishing business, but i'd love to know who many units you need to sell on each format compared to 5 years ago., because from all the info I can gather, it seems to be about half!!!

"You people miss the point. The games that are on the top ten are being mainly bought by families. Mom walks into best buy and her little daughter spots Nancy Drew and a copy is sold" So when its the American chart full of crap games its because of the parents and families buying them but when its the UK chart its because we have bad taste.

You people miss the point. The games that are on the top ten are being mainly bought by families. Mom walks into best buy and her little daughter spots Nancy Drew and a copy is sold. But... that doesn't mean that games that aren't on the top ten don't sell. Take Hitman: Blood Money for instance. The game quickly left the top ten but it probably sold enough copies to satisfy Eidos. PC games are selling and some titles sell at a much slower rate. Answer this then: If games such as Hitman weren't selling why does Eidos keep releasing sequels whenever they announce another game?

@TintedChimes "Wait a minute, does that mean they're coming out with Starcraft 2 soon?" If SC2 was to come out soon, and "soon" being in Blizzard-Time, then maybe in two years? They take their time, but oh how we love them...

Starcraft is only 12 dollars, YES! Wait a minute, does that mean they're coming out with Starcraft 2 soon?

I noticed Madden's rapid rise has given way to it's equally rapid fall. Shucks, too bad. I just hope it takes Nancy Drew with it off the top ten when it vanishes next week or so. Seriously, how has Nancy stayed on this list for almost 2 months? Cars also seems to have a bit more staying power than I would have thought. WOW must come preinstalled on new computers. You would have thought that everyone with even a passing interest in it must have gotten a copy by now. Who knows, I was thinking that months ago and yet it still stays at or near the top.

$12 for Starcraft, school/college is now back into full swing, and the old game gets #5? Coincidence? I think not. Must've been a lot of people who lost their discs and saw no reason not to replace them :)

Mmm doesnt anyone find this chart just a tick strange :) I mean "Nancy Drew - Danger By Design" is nothing compared to like "Serious Sam" remember that game with the hyped up music and the urge to kill :D weeeeeeee that was fun. World of Warcraft...fine, I dont like the game but i aint go against all those millions of players and to be fair Starcraft is amazing but geee...there have been some great games since 1999. Anyways, Company of Heros looks like great fun, so I think ill be heading down to get that.

How is it dead? I'd rather have Starcraft and WoW be up there rather then Madden on evrey console.

Why is RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 there? It's a great game but wasn't expecting it to chart all of a sudden.
