Twin Peaks fans will have to wait a little longer for their next slice of cherry pie, as it has been confirmed that the third season of the groundbreaking early '90s show will not air until 2017.

When the new season was announced by creators David Lynch and Mark Frost in October 2014, a broadcast date of 2016 was declared, which would have marked the 25th anniversary of the last episode to date. However, Variety have reported that during CBS’ third-quarter earnings conference call, the company's President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves stated that the show would now appear at some point in 2017.

The third season is currently filming, with David Lynch returning to direct the entire thing. The road to production has not been entirely smooth--in April this year, Lynch publicly withdrew from the project, citing budgetary conflicts with producers Showtime, which is owned by CBS. These issues were eventually resolved, but as early as June, Frost had suggested that the new season would now be pushed to 2017.

In August, Showtime president David Nevins revealed that Lynch and Frost had written season three as a single script, which would be filmed as one long block, then edited down to individual episodes.

With production now underway, in September Frost himself made a Twitter appeal to fans to refrain from posting images from the set in Snoqualmie, Washington:

While Kyle McLachlan is the only original cast member confirmed for the show so far, Sherilyn Fenn, Dana Ashbrook, Richard Beymer, and Sheryl Lee are all expected to return. Robert Forster, Balthazar Getty, Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, and Jennifer Jason Leigh are among those who have been rumoured to be joining the cast.

Twin Peaks originally ran for two seasons between 1990 and 1991, with the prequel movie Fire Walk With Me following in 1992.
