Torchlight II sales hit 2 million

Runic Games' PC action role-playing game reaches new sales milestone since launch last year.

by

PC game Torchlight II has sold over 2 million copies since launch in September 2012, developer Runic Games announced today. The sales milestone was crossed last weekend.

"We are overwhelmed by the reception for Torchlight II. To hit this milestone is a testament not only to our dedicated development team, but also to the greatest, most positive gaming community I've ever seen," CEO Max Schaefer said in a statement.

The original Torchlight, available on the PC and Xbox 360, has sold over 1 million copies, bringing the franchise life-to-date sales to over 3 million.

Torchlight II has players once again embarking on hack-and-slash role-playing game adventures through randomly generated dungeons to secure rare items. It includes new character classes, quests, monsters, and dungeons, and a co-op mode.

Glad to hear that Runic are getting the sales they deserve.I "knew" Torchlight 2 was going to be better than Diablo III, simply because Runic are, for me, the proper size of a games company. When you get too big you have to make too many compromises. I hope they can use the cash they are making wisely.

p.s. I have to admit I've not played Diablo III. But then again I have zero desire to do so, why bother when there is Torchlight 2?

Who cares if the Steam sales helped it at all?

The fact stands, Torchlight II crushed Diablo III like a flea...

So Diablo III sales were over 10 mil? Yeah... that's pretty awesome, I mean.. not that the name "Diablo" and "Blizzard" wouldn't affect things like pre-ordering and sheet...

looks like the steam sale helped boost torchlight sales. I'm one of those people who bought this game in the summer steam sale. I heard it was good but never tried it. So I thought, for $5, why not? I love the game so far.

I bought it a while back, but never finished it. I thought the first Torchlight was better.

This game could be sold better if it's also released on physical disc.

Great to hear an indie game has sold so well.  I am still on the first one though, but I am loving it.

Bought mine in the Steam sale, as did my girlfriend. Just waiting for her to come back from travels and then we will co-op it! Can't wait. We were majorly disappointed in Diablo 3

I bought Torchlight 2 last month, so I helped get it to 2 million.

I got mine recently on Steam for just $5. :-)

Publishers that use piracy as an excuse to not make a PC version of their games can go screw themselves.

Make a great game and people will buy it.

Yeah no kidding, since most bought the game for a nickle during the Steam sale.

Bu bbu bu but PC gamers don't buy games.

Sheesh! I bought it and it's a great game.

Torchlight 2 is the true Diablo 3 and it deserves all the praise it's getting. Hopefully Blizzard will learn from this and stop trying to screw people over, but they most likely won't since they've got loyal fans that will dish out money for a fake game that is Diablo 3 only in name.

I got this game during the Steam Sale and I'm having lots of fun with it.

I recommend it to any fan of hack and slash action-RPGs out there!

Diablo 3 was prettier. But the balance was nonexistent. The auction house and later the nerfs to classes and buffs to creatures as they opened the real money auction later, really hurt the game further. That's not to say Diablo 3 was bad, but it was over in a few hours. Which you'd repeat again on a higher difficulty, and loot drops were scarce as the game relied on you have X amount of Treasure Find to have a chance at much.

The 'Elite' and 'Named' mobs gave you better loot than Diablo himself so you'd mostly be farming those done for any senblance of a challenge because the bosses themselves were a complete joke.

By comparison, I later discovered Torchlight 2 to be pretty cartoony yet felt far more rewarding and had a much longer storyline. Many many different types of monster bosses (elite/named mobs) on top of the incredible Boss fights you got into. Though, I don't see the final boss as much of a challenge compared to Diablo when I first fought him, but by then I had grown to a pretty sweet build with some balanced out gear.

On top of the fact that the game seems to continue to grow with community added content that is actually GOOD and your ability to create your own class and move sets and play in the modded mode online (seperate from your main characters main game) and play the game with new pets and monsters and even dungeons just really sets this one on a much higher pedestal of awesome than D3 could ever offer.

TL;DR: Torchlight 2, people are seriously missing out on a game that truthfully slaughters Diablo 3 in gameplay, fun, level design, and variety in mobs and having more INTERESTING and challenging boss mechanics.

Torchlight 2 is 19.99 (normally 4.99 on sale) that'll last you many long hours where as Diablo 3 still has the gall to claim its worth 60 dollars for a game you'll clear within a few hours.

Diablo 3 was much more expensive to buy and sold 10 Million.

Clearly, there is no God.

Good for them...well deserved.  This game actually out Diablo's Diablo3.  Hope they make a few expansions.

Darn, I missed out on the 9.99 sale. Oh well.  There is always next year.  Buying it directly from the developer is what you should do by the way instead of going through steam. The game was the same price as the steam sale.  Really wish I would have remembered to buy it.  I am currently running through backlog of games though and totally forgot.

Pretty good, hoping they still make a Torchlight MMO

Meh. I put a hundred or so hours into it with two characters. Boring, same-y isometric environments, with 90% of encounters feeling like the same damn fight over and over. Only need to use 1~3 of your abilities to dominate. Hold M1, throw a few M2s in there every now and then along with some potions, and you win (and yes, I did play on the highest difficulty). Pretty mindless. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't a lonely, lonely grind. I would have preferred a Torchlight MMO. :/

@Eraldus Also remember the majority of those were part of the annual WoW subscription (why anyone would pay a full year in advance for that turd is beyond my comprehension).

@clqtte Bah, physical media is essentially dead on PC. It's a waste of plastic and paper, think of the environmental friendliness of DD.

@TerminalError I played Torchlight 2 a bit. Gonna re download it. I got to the 3rd act. It is loads of fun, much better than Diablo 3 in soo many ways. From customization, hidden secrets, loot...pretty much everything.  The story is nothing revolutionary though.  But still it does a far more better job at being a dungeon crawler than Diablo 3 ever did.

@edant79 I bought it last year for $20, I wish I would have waited for a sale.

iHarlequin

@edant79 More like USD 5,00 - and more than half the game's sales were during its month of release, when it wasn't discounted (as is with nearly every game). It was cheap because they didn't spend massive amounts of money on a huge staff and marketing (hell, at 2 million sales and less than half the price of SE's latest Tomb Raider (which sold over 3.5 m), it's considered a financial success while the latter isn't).

@DIGN Nah blizzard will never stop screwing people over. Just look at WoW now...Cash shop on top of a Sub fee.

@DIGN Sadly I was one of those fans who pre-ordered the game before realizing what they'd done to the Diablo franchise >< Goes without saying Blizzard probably lost half of their Diablo fanbase with that release. Torchlight 2 ftw.

@atopp399 Keep an eye on Steam, because this game goes on sale from time to time.  I actually bought it for less than $7 on Steam a few months ago.

@Yishaijah If you thought it was so boring why the hell did you play it for 100 plus hours? Seems like you have alot of time to waste doing things you dont like.

Vienreich

@Yishaijah agree. I wanted to love the game but was kind of thrown off due to the incredibly repetitive grinding.

TerminalError
TerminalError

@Kooken58 @TerminalError I don't think we will care much about the story. We just want something fun to jump in and out of, and have lots of cool loot and stuff along the way.

So judging by what you're saying, it sounds perfect! :D

@ArcherRO @HyperWarlock You need to proved proof for that, I also do not understandy what God has to do with this, since Diablo  exist  nearly a decade before torchligh

@n1i2z3a4n5 @atopp399 That's how much I paid thru Steam, about 5 months ago. Even so, Torchlight II is easily worth the $20 asking price.

I own Torchlight via GOG (DRM-free), which I caught on sale for $7.50. Again, worth every cent.

@Coheedrocks27

Because unlike a lot of schmucks around here, I try to give a game a fairly thorough chance before I pass judgment. And who said I didn't like it? I like quite a few things about it. I'd probably give it like a 6. Anyway, 100 hours is not that much, considering the time it's spread across (and I was probably a little generous with that estimate... it's probably more like 75). I put thousands into the games I love. I'm going on 4200 hours for Team Fortress 2. :)

@SalahDinThe2nD I believe he meant it as "there is no justice in the world" because Torchlight 2 is better than diablo 3.

I don't need to provide proof for the non existence of something.the people believing it must provide proof for it's existence. If not you should know that Santa Claus wasn't disproved either.Nor the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny, the Loch Ness monster, ancient or visiting aliens, werewolves, vampires or ghosts.let me know if you believe in any of them.
