Top 10 Game Sales According to NPD May 2014, Watch Dogs on Top

Sittin' on top of the world.

The NPD released their monthly US sales data today for May 2014. Overall sales for the games industry are up, and according to the report, "May 2014 launches sold 800 percent more in dollar sales than May 2013 launches did their respective launch months." Looking at total video games software sales, May 2013 brought in $175M while last month's software sales totaled $274M.

Ubisoft, according to the report, was the "number one corporate publisher for the month."

The top 10 games list follows below, though it's important to keep in mind that this represent new physical retail only, not digital or used game sales.

  1. Watch Dogs (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC) Ubisoft
  2. Mario Kart 8 (NWU) Nintendo
  3. MLB 14: The Show (PS4, PS3, PSV) Sony
  4. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC) Bethesda Softworks
  5. Minecraft (360, PS3) 5 Microsoft (Corp) Sony
  6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, 3DS, NWU) Activision Blizzard
  7. NBA 2K14 (360, PS4. PS3, XBO, PC) Take 2 Interactive
  8. Titanfall (360, XBO, PC) Electronic Arts
  9. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS) Nintendo
  10. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, PC, NWU) Activision Blizzard

Nintendo released their NPD data earlier, showing strong sales improvements for the Wii U. And in the overall NPD console sales report, the PlayStation 4 came out on top for the fifth consecutive month.

Some people are surprised that Mario Kart, which only sold on 1 minor console, was way up on the list.  However, it doesn't mean that game is epic, it might have a lot more to do with owners of the Wii U being desperate to play another new good game, since there are so few games on the Wii U.  A big release comes out and everyone on the console buys it, b/c there's not much else to buy.

Anybody know when to expect Steam's Summer sale?

So few good pc games lately, in my opinion. Steam is really pushing that Early Access crap with great success and, I lament. I hate to say it but pc gaming is becoming a cash grab/ money now quality maybe later business.

Wow, a single platform game is #2? I mean, I can understand why watchdogs got to be on top with all the hype and being on all platforms, but actually Mario kart 8 really deserves the top imo

Glad Wolfenstein sold well, that was an awesome game. I'm loving Watch Dogs too, and man, Call of Duty and Minecraft just keeps on selling and selling.

Being that Watch Dogs was the only significant game to launch, it lessens the position of Mario Kart being #2. If a baseball game is #3, you know it was a slow month. I own the Show 2014 for PS4,  but baseball games are never top-selling games.

6- The Amazing Spier-Man 2.

*Facepalm* Why make a good game, when you can just use the absolute power of branding and marketing?

I guess Activision spending some many hundreds of millions may be a smart deicision after all.

While it's good to see Wolfenstein at the top as well as Mario Kart, I don't understand why The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got to 6th place. The movie wasn't a critical success, it got even worse reviews than the last one, and the game sure didn't get favorable reviews. People just bought it because of the name? I guess that's still viable and so we'll see more mediocre licenced tie-in games.

It's going to be intersting to see which games are the top sellers for the next 3 months. I can only think of Destiny in September. July and August anyone?

I can't believe that Minecraft still has people to buy it!

NPD is no longer relevant re software sales. Doesn't include digital. It's a relic of a by-gone era.

@overlord_hh  That was an excellent line-up of games.  What do you want out of games if these are not good enough?

Ali_Asif

@handofkain It was never the hype. It was the game itself and Watch Dogs truly deserves it.

@Vodoo Don't forget that MK8 came out on May 30th, that is only two days to sell enough for second place for the whole month. Not bad if you ask me.

handofkain

@Hurvl The same happened with watchdogs, many people who bought because of the hype got dissapointed

Dissentioncc

So it's good to see two games that clearly sold mainly because of the name, but you are surprised a third one sold for the same reason? Mario Kart, Wolfenstein, and Spiderman will sell because they are Mario Kart, Wolfenstein, and Spiderman. Nothing shocking.

Ali_Asif
Ali_Asif

@dani_i89 No my friend. A game itself alone is what's amazing despite the hype.

@GSGuy321 Not really. Digital can't be included because many digital sale records aren't released. Steam doesn't even release sales numbers. So unless you can magically tell us what the highest digital sales were across all digital marketplaces, NPD numbers are the best there is.

@santap555 Who is considered a hater? I loved Watch Dogs, but it had a lot of problems. You are blind if you see it as purely bad or purely great. You need to take off your own fanboy goggles and accept that some criticism of Watch Dogs is valid.

mwamba1
mwamba1

@santap555 just because you dont enjoy something, it doesn't mean your a "hater". you enjoy watch_dogs then good for you. Just because people point out the attention to detail from Rockstar when making GTA, compared to Ubisoft...doesn't mean their fanboys. Maybe they just look for different things in gaming. There is a world that exists beyond your living room, with people that actually don't like the same thing you like. You should explore it sometime.

handofkain
handofkain

@Ali_Asif @handofkain From the feedback I saw after the release, and the reviews. Also, the amount of marketing the Ubisoft did prior to release proves my point

handofkain
handofkain

@Undertow207 @handofkain I really didn't notice that lol. I actually don't get why people buy iterations of these games every year, even though little-to-nothing ever changes in the new release

spacecadet25

@immortality20 @Vodoo  But people crap all over it, thinking it will be generic b/c it is retro.  It's too bad, b/c Wolfenstein is amazing.

Hurvl

@Dissentioncc Mario Kart 8 and Wolfie both got 8 from Gamespot. They got 82 and 88 respectively at metacritic, while Spider-Man got 5 from Gamespot and 57 on metacritic. That's the difference.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@liquidbutter @santap555  I agree with you mostly, however there's a lot of unjust criticism of Watch Dogs.  I agree with things like the driving feels weird, but I entirely disagree with people saying the city in Watch Dogs is very bland and unrealistic.

Yeah, maybe it's not actual Chicago, but it has a lot of cool landmarks and history, has a lot of detailed and varied environments and is very transversable compared to a lot of other open world environments.

I think Watch Dogs suffers so many criticisms not because the game is so bad, but the expectations of it were so high based on all the hype.  "The city is not the full and actual Chicago...then the city in Watch Dogs sucks!"

Hurvl
Hurvl

@AizazSharif @santap555 If they'll never "get it", then they should play other games. No point in playing games you don't enjoy.

mcmax3000
mcmax3000

@handofkain @Undertow207 Because the people that play sports games year after year usually play them A LOT, so what looks like minor changes to you can actually be pretty major changes to the people that are into those games.

For example, from MLB: The Show 12 to 13, they changed the timing for hitting. To most, that probably sounds pretty minor. To me, as someone that plays those games every year, it made a HUGE difference.

spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@mcmax3000 @handofkain @Undertow207  I see your point, but after all the time, have they not perfected the game yet? Don't you have one that's your favorite. With racing games, they have for me, I have 2, and the ones that keep coming out have not materially changed enough (in a good way)  for me to buy one.

spacecadet25
spacecadet25

@spartanx169x @mcmax3000 @handofkain @Undertow207  No, you can't perfect a game and keep rolling with it.  Too many would lash out saying "I already played this."  And that just doesn't go for sports games, people said the same things about Crysis 3 being too much like Crysis 2, b/c it used the same engine.  It's too bad, really, b/c developers think they have to rebuild everything from scratch all the time, needlessly wasting money.
