Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Completed in an Unbelievably Short Time

A speedrun of the skateboarding game shows that navigating menus is just as important as playing the game itself.

I spent a lot of time playing the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, and I was very rarely able to complete levels with anything resembling style. But there will inevitably be someone who will absolutely master a game, and Pro Skater 2 is no exception. YouTube user GeorgeThePlushie has just posted a speedrun of the game, and it's almost unbelievable.

He managed to beat Pro Skater 2 in 3 minutes and 26 seconds, making it through the objectives and the levels at an absolutely blistering pace. To score high enough to complete the score-based goals, he continually jumps and does tricks as he rides through the level. Almost more impressive than the way he plays, though, is the way he navigates through the menus. It's so quick and efficient that it's difficult to follow what's going on.

The speedrunner does utilize glitches in maps and he clips through some walls, but that doesn't take away from how impressive this run is.

Have you ever attempted a speedrun like this? Let us know in the comments.

Are the loading screens edited out? I'm not familiar with this game so don't flame me...

If he didn't complete all the goals, then he didn't beat it.

I still have this on PC from when I was like 6 haha totally wanna go back and play it now. Bought the HD remake as well, wonder what that has on it!

why people bother competing with completing old games in short times? I don't understand why they pick old games where they can play new games and have more fun.

About halfway through, I began to get suspicious.  I don't believe that all of those skateboard moves are possible in real life.  Just what kind of simulator is this?

Also, I wish @newhaus1994 had warned us that he was going to start cursing like a frat boy as soon as he finished.  It might be helpful to know that this is not safe for work or kids before you start playing the video.

Happy to see the SR community is being seen by more and more people now. That's one great thing Twitch has bought to many new people. I'm always looking for a new PB in games and for those that say exploits/glitches are wrong in SRs, have no idea how hard many of these are to do in the first place. They are there in the original games dating as far back as the original NES Zelda (screen hop), so if its in the original game with no cheat devices or codes, its doable.

Example: look up  Tobal 2 "Quest Mode" by pirohiko. Glitch SR, yet uber impossible to pull off for just about anyone else. Most don't realize the time put into it to figure it all out.

Lots of practice and knowing the layout of every level like that bacj of your hand. I never completed any of the Tony Hawk games. This was cool though. This was cool though. I doubt the developers at Neversoft believed anyone could finish all the goals that fast in their game.

It would be more impressive if he 100%.  Not the bare minimum and japan air competitions.

dude been watching some speedruns on twitch stuff is crazy, and yes the glitches are used often and is how they do a lot of their times.  World records for things like ocarina of time and mega man 3 all use glitches to skip massive parts of the games, they beat ocarina as kid link that should tell you something.

Man I want a proper, next-gen Tony Hawk like this. I don't want one dull open world, that's when the series started to mess up. Despite how old the HD version felt, I still really enjoyed it. Now, a real next-gen version of THPS3 with more levels and the right music, all the multiplayer modes, Platinum and a lot of love and care for the game is what I want.

best soundtrack of all the tony hawk games. I own every song on it.

I'm pretty sure that using glitches are considered legit amongst the speedrunner community.  Glitches can be extremely hard to pull off, specially in a speedrun playthrough.

The day that I can do this for any game, I'll have to sit back and take a long, hard look at my life.

Yes. Yes it does, actually.

@so_hai  He seems to be emulating the game on pc. With today's hardware, load times for these older games just aren't even there anymore.

@fgjnfgh are you baiting people that enjoy older games or are you actually that uninteresting and without taste?

imajinn

@fgjnfgh They do them on all games. Research it. And because they are newer does not make them more fun. That would be your opinion.

@UnaSolida A slow news day is when Eddie makes an article about "anonymous sources suggest rumors about rumors might be just rumors" or other such non-news. This article is actually pretty cool.

night_drifter05

@UnaSolida I wouldn't call it slow news day really, speed running is becoming insanely popular so people are wanting to see more and more of this. Might not be relevant to you, but when was the last time every article of news posted on every site had a interest to you?

@Sajius  No, no it doesn't actually. Namely because you have to have the execution to speed run it in the first place. Anyone has access to glitches but not just anyone can get those times. even if they use them. In any case, he only glitched through one wall and lost time messing it up in the first place.

OldDirtyCR

@Sajius Nearly all (or possibly all) video game speedruns utilize "glitches". The rules are simply that you can do anything as long as it's the original disc/cartidge and you aren't using any external cheats. Zelda, Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, Fallout, etc all involve utilizing glitches in game.

I feel like you haven't even watched the video. This is extremely impressive playing and he has everything down to a science.

@Sajius I think the idea of getting through the game as fast as possible regardless of using cheats is what most people like about it.  Most of the records and stories that we see getting thrown around are using exploits.  The short times are just more impressive and make for better press pieces I guess.

@Rhino_All @so_hai I'm guessing PS2 with smooth textures, but I don't know.  Either way, this is really f*cking stup*d (like gamespot's censorship of the word st*pid).  Just cause you can blow through a game this fast doesn't mean you should.  Slow down and savor it!

fgjnfgh

@imajinn he's actually controlling a human origami and I can count how many vertices in this game. This game can't even handle circles

Obviously I struck a nerve, lol sorry. And no I'm an old skool gamer I LOVE speed runs but Tony Hawk is so cliché at this point. There's plenty of old games I'd love to see speed ran. Honestly (and I'm sure someone did it) I'd love to see a serious Sam tfe on mental difficulty speed run for example. That would be pretty rad in imo.

@UnaSolida

What is news? Something new and this video just went up.
Thinking something is cliche is a cliche in of itself.

@Sajius No, no it doesn't actually.  These are speed runs, that's what they do.  Those are the rules and he followed them to a tee.  Impressive run is impressive.

@Sajius You don't have to be sorry.  It's OK to be wrong sometimes.

ps.  you are forgiven.

@naryanrobinson Can't be wrong when it's an opinion on what is impressive and what's not impressive, can ya chief? :)

@naryanrobinson @Sajius ohh but if I'm so wrong as you say why would you want to mimic what I'm doing? :/ *confused*. I guess they do say imitation is the finest form of flattery :3 *excited*

@Sajius And might I add that I'm awfully flattered you're using English as your preferred language to be wrong in.  Thrilled.  Absolutely thrilled.

@naryanrobinson @Sajius Huh? Oh, hehe! Was that one supposed to be a comeback? :3 *giggles* (kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel on that one there sport :/ )

naryanrobinson

@Sajius Dead serious.  And I think your barrel was done a while back.  You're a little light on clever content if you don't mind me saying.

Sajius
Sajius

@naryanrobinson @Sajius How can a barrel be done? Do you mean like, empty? or is this some weird text version of Donkey Kong that I didn't know I was playing? Are you the big monkey, or the little one? I always got annoyed by the little one, but on Donkey Kong 64 I did like how you could use the banana gun as a weapon, that was cool.

@naryanrobinson @Sajius The best part about all of this is that you think you're winning some sort of comment back and forth discussion.

@Sajius The best part is that you think you're being clever :)  It's truly adorable.

@naryanrobinson @Sajius I guess I just hold my speedruns to a higher standard :3 But hey, if you need glitches/bugs to beat it then go for it. Not everyone can be good.

@Sajius i guess you just don't know what they are.  don't worry i'm sure you'll figure it out one day.
