Tons of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare details emerge

Sledgehammer's upcoming shooter runs on a new engine and the story opens with a catastrophic event described as "like a global 9/11."

by

In addition to details about Sledgehammer Games' scrapped third-person Call of Duty game that was set during the Vietnam War, the June issue of Game Informer magazine is loaded with 12 pages' worth of information about the recently revealed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

We've rounded up some of the most interesting details and listed them below. The full Game Informer June 2014 issue is available for purchase today.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare details:

  • In development at Sledgehammer Games for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A separate studio to be named later is working on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. There's no word on Wii U.
  • The game runs on a new and unspecified game engine.
  • The story opens with a catastrophic event that Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey describes as "like a global 9/11." There's little more to go on, but major cities on multiple continents are affected by some kind of terrorism perpetrated by a terrorist organization called KVA.
  • It is set in 2054.
  • You play a character named Private Mitchell, who is voiced by prolific voice actor Troy Baker. You may know Baker for his recent roles in The Last of Us (Joel), BioShock Infinite (Booker), and Batman: Arkham Origins (The Joker). Mitchell only speaks during cutscenes; never during gameplay.
  • Mitchell starts Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare as a Marine, who is squadmates with Will Irons, the son of Private Military Company Atlas Corporation CEO Jonathan Irons (played by Kevin Spacey). After their tour of duty is done, the elder Irons asks Mitchell if he wants to leave the Marines to join his company. Mitchell says yes and is outfitted with an "EXO" suit for his new job.
  • Unlike past Call of Duty games, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has only one protagonist.
  • Kevin Spacey says he was "very excited" about joining the game when he was originally approached.
  • You'll earn points every mission that can be used to upgrade your EXO suit. Using the EXO suit, you can climb walls with magnetic gloves, boost-dodge toward cover, perform super-jumps that let you get to higher ground, use optic camouflage for cloaking, and hover in mid-air.
  • Your arsenal includes "variable grenades," which can be switched from concussion to threat detection while they cook. The threat detection grenade reveals enemy locations and makes this information available via an augmented reality system visible in your visor.
  • Some of your guns are energy-based, and do not use traditional ammunition.
  • There is a rideable vehicle called a Pitbull, which is based on the real world Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle.
  • There's no official word on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer yet, but Condrey teases, "You can probably imagine the possibilities of a lot of the stuff you saw in single-player and how it would apply online." Activision also says it is "absolutely committed" to supporting eSports.
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will have some kind of co-op mode.
  • Veteran Metal Gear Solid composer Harry Gregson-Williams is working on the game's soundtrack. Audio director Don Veca says, "I think Advanced Warfare is going to be the best-sounding and certainly the best-mixed game ever."
  • In an effort to create a believable world, Activision consulted with "experts from production design in movies to experts in the military to scientists and futurists," according to Sledgehammer cofounder Glen Schofield.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches November 4. For more, be sure to read GameSpot's previous coverage.

Guess what...'MURICA!

There are more countries in the world, 'MURICA is obviously not a hero no where near being a hero, it's just an invasion drone using force!

If they really wanted to amp people up they would focus more on this "new game engine", You know, maybe give it a name and tell us about some of the new things this engine will be able to do.   Keeping that unspecified right off the bat has me questioning it.   That should be the main focus of any "next gen" cod game.   to me the game is looking like a mash-up with pretty character models.  Game comes out in like 7 months so lets see what this new engine can do!!

If it cant to the basic things that the frostbite does, it will probably be crap.

So, can I start calling it Crysisfall now, or do I have to wait until beta?

Ghost was the first COD that really disappointed me.  I thought my heart was dead to COD, but the trailer definitely lit a spark.  Looking forward to seeing more.

It's kinda funny when some people complain that COD releases games yearly you should know that there are three developers for the game if you don't know anything about this maybe you just play games not reading the news about them

9/11 was a dark spot of humanity that has been amplified by governments, media and video games. These games dwell on fear and hatred and have influenced a generation.

When will this legacy of terror be forgotten? It's time to move on.

Yea Ghosts had a "new" engine too.

By the way, did anyone do Ghosts on PS3 and upgrade later? Was it that big of  a change?

I am going to probably get a PS4 this fall, and I love COD, so I need to know whether or not the new system imporved your experience. Its either buy a PS4 or flesh out my PC, so the Witcher is running at least on high, or keep it in the middle range as it is now, and have the PS4 for COD and the PS exclusives.

Thanks guys

New game engine, new mechanics, energy weapons....I might actually pick this one up. It seems like the most change in a while

Really now? To me it just looks like another "Updated" version of the 8 year old IW engine. Just look at Kevin Spacey's Character. He looks soo lifeless, and like a piece of plastic. From his emotionless face, to his plastic hair.  Graphics arn't everything, but when you have a game that hasn't gone anywhere from a technological standpoint...the game grows old very quickly, especially when its released every damn year.

Wow. Looks like they're really giving this their all. I guess they really don't want to be the studio that killed Call of Duty.

I love how people want this game to punish Campers. Camping is what real people call playing smart not running around like a chicken with your head cutoff. Ask a Soldier  how well running around like you do in COD would work IRL. Also people want shields so getting shot in the head once doesn't kill you what the hell is wrong with people.

@Ahiru-San im late i know but theyve been working on this game for 3 years now. thats was before titanfall was being worked on.

@rengokunobannin It's not simply the development time that bugs me, it's that they release this stuff every goddamn year without any data import benefits. "Finished-maxing-out-every-weapon-and-perks? Well-fuck-that,-let's-make-you-do-that-shit-all-over-again-next-year, often-with-the-exact-same-stuff!" By about MW3 I figured that no, I'm not going to redo that shit annually for a game series that looks exacerbatingly more ancient with every passing year. If these games were released bi-annually, there would be more of a lasting factor to warrant playing the things. But alas they don't, and I have a much wider range of games to contend with that doesn't need to be filled up with annual COD titles.

I'm not happy with CoD anymore but I gotta say, Assassins Creed has been pumpin out the games like it's going out of style and you don't see them bashing It. Hypocrisy

@CallMeDuraSouka  If you have the money, I'd say go for it. There's a lot of great ps4 exclusives coming. I play ghosts on ps4. The online is really smooth and I haven't experienced lag hardly at all. I've only played it a couple of times on ps3 but I could definitely tell a difference in terms of resolution and online lag.

Zjarcal

@Kooken58  Yeah, his character model betrays the whole "new engine" nonsense.

Then again they said the same thing for Ghosts, nothing but marketing mumbo jumbo.

Might still be good though, but blegh, enough with selling an upgraded engine as "new".

hystavito

@Deadlysyns87  You're right but like others are saying, you should probably be playing an entirely different game.  I don't like CoD and I don't play it, I'm not defending it.  I just think what you want will never happen in CoD, so might as well find a different game.

madgame23

@Deadlysyns87 What players do in COD is not camping.  Most camping is to hold something or achieve scores.  COD camping should be called kill/score streak farming because the only reason players do it is to achieve killstreaks.  Ghosts was the pinnacle modern farming in COD.  Every player I played just sat around the map and farmed killstreaks, I could literally find no one to fight and just get shot in the back by a camper.  Yeah its some skill to just sit around corners and play that crap.

CallMeDuraSouka
CallMeDuraSouka

@Deadlysyns87

Ask a soldier huh............................I hate to break it to you, but COD is in no way shape or form a simulator, nor does it resemble a real life contact scenario, it is supposed to be a fanatic run and gun, that's the appeal.

Hard Camping requires no skill, its cheap and widely despised for a reason. Like another guy said, there is a time and place for it, just not all the time, and in one place.

merimack
merimack

@Deadlysyns87  Yeah, I have no problem with "camping" as long as it's not like @shua83 said where there's someone just sitting in the corner of a room watching a doorway, that's a little annoying. However when someone is doing it strategically, say defending a domination point or covering your teammates by watching down a corridor, that's fine by me. That type of camping is how you win matches, while the guy sitting in the corner is usually the one who loses. Even though his KD may be better, he's not helping the team.

shua83
shua83

@Deadlysyns87 Bahahahaha the real question is what is wrong with you? Must be fun sitting watching a doorway for 10 mins, no real skill at all there. It's not real life it's a freakin video game, that's what's wrong with the Cod community, you get all butthurt abour ur K/D ratio.

Joefatty2x4
Joefatty2x4

@Deadlysyns87 CoD is not and never has been a simulation to any degree. It's an arcade FPS built strictly for fun, not realism, and this game will be no different. No matter what anyone says (including the developers). Though I would be very grateful if they slowed the pace of the gameplay down and made it more strategic. Yea right, CoD is forever dead...

@ima_troller___ @Ahiru-SanThey were pitched the TitanFall concept before  Jason West and Vincent Zampella got terminated, hence the reason they trademarked all of those space and scifi domains shortly after the termination of them. Also being that Jason West left Respawn, and it's rumored that he was trying to sabotage TitanFall's development, he could've easily given some info to the rival. Happens a lot in the industry, hence so many games coming out at the same time with very similar content and systems.

thermalmotion

Yeah I can see why you'd think I'm being dramatic, but it's how I feel about these games. It's not just this one, the whole series is built on this topic.

@zrex2metagor @jedaii_knight  Because its sad that a once good competitive game has been dumbed down so bad that its basically made for 8 year old scrubs. Imagine MLB made it where you can only throw 60mph or less and could use aluminum bats...that would be retarded and people would go crazy.

biggamer194
biggamer194

@Joefatty2x4 @Deadlysyns87I've said they need to make a mode called Tactikill that does exactly that, slow down the pace a bit, and make it a bit more tactical. That way the COD fanbase gets what they want as does the guys wanting to play diff. The only thing I like about COD that they always get right and that's it's turn sensitivity spikes "aka controls" I'm no fan of it's sensitivity max, but if other games used the same turn sensitivity spikes but capped it off to say a level 15 of COD I would enjoy them so much more.

biggamer194
biggamer194

@HaK-ForgoTT3n I agree, but it's not that other games have been dumbed down, I can live with that. For me it's the fact that all the publishers are pushing for their games to be COD regardless of the genre, and publishers are only pushing for COD style games. I like diversity and variety. I appreciate the COD games, but I want to see more out there of diff themes and that get daring, and bring that imaginative fun factor back like EarthWorm Jim or Doom Troopers. Not saying I hate COD, because I don't, but I don't play the series anymore, and as a gamer I want the COD guys to get their fix alongside the non COD guys.

@CallMeDuraSouka @merimackofc COD is bad on the PC D: however is anyone gonna kill anything without aim assist? :( Poor PC gamers.....they should stop using a mouse to aim, I mean whats real skill when you got aim assist right? And ofcourse the graphics are soooo much better on a ps4 right?  *Strong sarcasm intended*
