THQ off-roadin' in Baja in August

MX vs. ATV alumni at 2XL Games developing new off-road racer for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Baja California's vast expanses of sun-kissed sand have long been a favorite for off-road racing. So it isn't totally surprising, then, that the Mexican province's name has been appropriated for an all-new PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game from THQ, publisher of the MX vs. ATV series. The title is being developed by Phoenix, Arizona-based indie studio 2XL Games, which was founded in 2005 by several of the founding members of Rainbow Studios (MX vs. ATV Untamed, Cars).

Like the recently released Burnout Paradise, Baja will be set in a vast open world containing many individual racing events. Unlike Criterion's critically lionized racer, THQ's offering will be set in 100 square miles of unforgiving outback, replete with mud bogs, steep mountains, and deep canyons. A variety of events will be available, ranging from vertical hill-climbing challenges to grueling circuit races, which can be played via four-player split-screen multiplayer capability or with up to a dozen players online.

"THQ is thrilled to bring something completely new to the off-road racing genre," said THQ vice president of product development Richard Browne. He promised that the game, which is due out in August in North America, would also sport highly realistic vehicle physics while still offering easy-to-play arcade modes.

WTF? No PC version? Gee, thanks for all the love, THQ! You only have one game (Dirt) to compete with on PC, and you don't even bother trying?

Being a Class 9 Baja 1000 racer I also hope they don't botch this up. Evolution did a pretty good job at MotorStorm just learn from that and make this a few levels up. I think making the vehicles more authentic is a must to bringing more reality to the game. Do some research take a close look at the vehicles and make them true. Put the full race at a game level...yeah I mean all 1000 miles not just an animal in a small cage (100 mile?). What's the whole race about.... saving the car but pushing it to the max winning the race. Hope for the best off road game to date.

Anxiety. This game has the potential to be unbelievably awesome. An open world like TDU, off road racing in Baja, and with the deep history and opportunity the Baja 1000 subject matter offers...this could be great. It's too bad you have to expect a flop. I expect they'll manage to blow a dream game somehow. Games actually designed to be great are all too rare while games designed to rape a new license are all too common. I hope I'm wrong. I'll be watching and looking forward to this one.

Good point, I missed that when reading it the first time. That will be quite a bit different from Motorstorm.

Seen pics in new Xbox mag looks sharp. Motorstorm has set the bar pretty high but each year games get better. With the right control scheme and online features Baja could be good.

keyword here is "open terrain". Not hard to beat Motorstorm on that front.

Sounds like a good game, looking forward to finding out more.

Yes, but can it beat motorstorm? I've never been a big fan of racing games, much less offroads (although Mx vs ATV unleashed owned because of all the cheats and easter eggs), but what really matters is the market for the genre.

It's gonna be hard "to bring something completely new to the off-road racing genre" but if they can, more power to THQ. The genre desperately needs it.

Hmmm... sounds a bit like Motorstorm in terms of racing environment.
