Thief pacifist playthrough possible

Eidos Montreal confirms players can complete next-generation action game without killing anyone.

Gamers will be able to complete upcoming next-generation action game Thief without performing a single kill, developer Eidos Montreal has confirmed.

"You can complete the game without killing anybody," the developer explained on its blog. "Garrett is a master thief, not a killing machine!"

According to Eidos, players will have multiple ways to approach objectives throughout Thief. Depending on the path players choose, they will encounter unique sets of challenges, as well as looting opportunities.

In addition, the developer confirmed that difficulty options in Thief will be scalable, allowing players to select a more traditional and hardcore experience or a newcomer-friendly option.

Thief is due out for the PC, PlayStation 4, and "other next-gen platforms" in 2014.

I like that. Options are always good. If anything, NOT killing anyone is more hardcore. Not to mention way cooler and more realistic (as a Master Thief) than otherwise.

I think the developers are on the right track... Of course it will  be a more realistic, satisfying way to play the game (stealthily), but also keep in mind if we want it to be realistic, Garrett should have the option to murder a few people if he wants.  They're'll just be repercussions- like alerting guards and getting pummeled.

Pacifist way will be possible? Is this a joke? Sneaking should be THE ONLY real way of accomplishing missions. Original games punished every badass player and it should stay that way. Garrett is a thief, not a killer! >:[

I hope this commentator does not quit his day job.  I thought I was going to see thoughtful objective comments but obviously this person seems to think he is a comedian. NOT.  I have been waiting a long time for thief and was hopeful I would get some insite on the game so I could decide on whether to purchase a PS4, Xbox, etc .  Didn't happen.

I've been following this stuff with much trepidation. In all honesty I really hope they don't f**k it up. The old Thief games are so good with fantastic gameplay in fact I remember playing the Downwind Thieves guild mission in T1 and taking about 3-4 hrs to complete it during my very first play through. Brilliant stuff ! Nowadays an entire game can be finished in 10 hrs. Terrible. I hope they don't give us all "flash" and ultra fast paced stoopid "ninja" like skills. Just remember : Garrett's a human being, if you were silly enough to make a mistake in the game you soon knew about it ! To the devs ; Stick to the roots of the original games and make it a slow paced game with thought provoking fear inducing gameplay where every piece of loot was stolen in a satisfying manner.

Well...I remember avoiding a lot of guards and knocking them out with a stick... So how is this any different than the old thief?

(The only thing I wish I could kill was the ghost in the asylum, they haunt me still T.T )

Killing is part of the fun. Both with sneaky attacks or full frontal combat. I liked to hide in the shadows and then shoot enemies with arrows or club them and then hide the bodies. Above all, i want to be able to choose my approach. Hate games that force us to do things their way instead of allowing us to decide. I am not interested in achievements and awards. So i hope they do not ruin this and keep faithful to the original games.

Don't go the Dishonored route.  Do not give disproportionate rewards, achievements, or special ranking crap to people who don't kill anyone.  In fact, don't give any rewards no matter if you kill everyone or kill no one.

Nothing was more unfun than Ghost runs in Deus Ex 3 or Dishonored.

Never played dishonored but the more I hear about it, the more it sounds like they ripped off thief.

Oh shit... Thief is taking ideas from Dishonored!? It's almost like they're stealing their own idea!

Well, that certainly would seem to fit the trend of stealth games nowadays.

Looking good, thus far it's upon my purchase list.

All people working on this game should be required to go back and play Thief 1-2 all the way through before continuing development of this game. Im just afraid that maybe the release of some current games like Dishonored may have given them the idea to develop a new Thief game. Don't get me wrong I love Dishonored but it is nothing like Thief.

Cannot wait for this game to come out. Will follow closely

Awesome. Loved doing my no kill+no powers playthrough on Dishonored, chances are, I'll have fun with this.

More than possible, I want it to be encouraged. At least on the harder difficulties like the older games.

Shalebridge Cradle on thief 3 was the best level i ever played

Good to hear.  Hopefully any kills you do perform won't be as simple as rushing headlong into foes and going on a stab-fest.  The first two were especially deadly when coming face to face with a Hammerite/Mechanist or skilled guard.

This is good to hear, but having a minor case of OCD, I have to KO (preferably) or kill (last resort) EVERY possible adversary in the levels or I feel like I left something out.

It's was about time that old Thief fans got some good news.

This will be me playing the game:

"Ok, I'm gonna sneak past all those guys and get the loot". *first opponent hears me* "Ok, so much for that, YOU WILL ALL FEEL MY WRATH!!!" *kills everyone*.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. Video games are already blamed for violence in society. We don't want them to be blamed for non-violence too! :P

i didnt want to read this article , the title implied im in for a long wait for this game.....

which is looking awesome. .. counting the months.

I don't remember killing a single person in all my playthroughs of T1-3 ever (was it even necessary?) and I played those games countless times always only on expert difficulty (well, maybe except the first time I played them) - so why would I want to kill anyone in T4, hm? Bring on the stealth version, that's what I'm waiting for!

Words cannot convey how much I adore this series; I've waited a long time for this announcement. Thief II: The Metal Age had a profound impact on my imagination as a kid, and  the notoriously bad (that's good!) voice acting has been a prevailing source of humor between my brother and I for years. I wish it luck, cause expectations have changed since it paved the way so many years ago. Hopefully, the old dog doesn't "taff" around with the newcomers

.

I expected as much. Sounds good to me.

That's all I needed to know, will pre-order as soon as it appears on Steam.

the pure stealth game is dead, ah well.

HawkeDB

@Vojtass Agreed. The first time my friends and I played Thief (original) we all played it on the hardest mode possible, and if you killed someone, you lose the mission.

Had to collect all the goodies, a ton of gold, and kill NO-ONE or its mission failure.

More games need to be like this, and I can't wait for Thief 4, this has been on my wish list for a very long time.

@Doddie Feedbackula is a TERRIBLE show... it provides you with as little information about games as possible, and as much idiotic nonsense

Vojtass
Vojtass

@MissSarita Choice is not the case, because Garrett is a thief, not murderer. In original games combat was always your last chance, way of defense in critical situation. It should stay that way. Game should punish every player who want to be Mr. Kill'em-All.

deadkingdg

@MissSarita I don't know, I actually find my stealth games without any kills since often, it is more of a challenge to do so. But yeah, the best is when you can do it how you would prefer.

timmortus
timmortus

I disagree. Dishonored rewarded players who *didn't* go the stealthy route by providing them with all the cool tricks of the trade. They made that the fun way to play and then chastised you in the end for playing that way. Alternately, if you go the path of the "Thief" you have relative few tools to do it with. Thief had moss arrow and knockout gas and all sorts of ways to make non-deadly takedowns a blast. It MADE the game to do all you needed to do without alerting anyone. If I wanted to going on a killing spree I have a multitude of other games that do it a lot better.  Please EIDOS Montreal. Don't go the Dishonoured route, but DO reward the undetected!

@Thanatos2k You're thinking of the wrong game here, son. The whole point of the game is stealing (hence, "Thief") and not killing, so it makes sense to give incentives to people playing non-lethal runs.

More like a tribute from my understanding.

@Brakkyn I know what you mean. I remember blackjacking every guard in one of the earlier levels of thief 3 and finding satisfaction in throwing all of their bodies in the same shadowy corner, right under the nose of the last guards that I knocked out.

@SavoyPrime like in all previous thief games that was an option, but was (and hopefully still will be) very difficult.

MissSarita

@SavoyPrime Join the club! If developers are smart, they will allow us to choose our approach, otherwise i will simply put the game aside as i have done with others.

Vojtass
Vojtass

@HawkeDB @Vojtass I hope that difficulty levels will remain like in predecessors. Hard and merciless. And for sneaking players only. Still I don't like sense feature which smells to me like Batman AA 'detective mode". Where's the challange? :(

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@analyser @Thanatos2k Bad design, bad idea.  Yes, it should be about the stealing, which means give rewards for people who find everything to steal, NOT people who didn't kill anyone.

Getting discovered then reloading because you have to play the level without getting discovered is not fun at all.  Dishonored became 50 times more fun once I just fought the people who found me.

shingui5
shingui5

@Kickable @shingui5 yes yes yes, i get people want choices and all that stuff.

I'm just lamenting on the death of the pure stealth game, seeing as Thief is almost genre defining in this aspect.

Choices on how to play aren't necessarily a bad thing no, but, a game that is 100% stealth, no compromises, no short-cuts or laziness in design, but a pure brutal stealth game?
I think that would be better, than a game that only half concentrates on this aspect.

hystavito
hystavito

@Kickable @shingui5  It doesn't necessarily mean it's better.  I like games where you choose how to play too, but I also sometimes want a pure stealth game where trying to play non-stealth is extremely difficult and comes with special consequences.

Kickable
Kickable

@shingui5 @Kickable same here, stealth is always a lot more fun to me.  it's even more rewarding in Deus Ex if I remember right
