The Unworthy Thor Is Looking for a New Hammer

Can Thor become worthy of Mjolnir once again?

If you're familiar with Chris Hemsworth's portrayal of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's easy to believe the Asgardian god has it all: great looks, a massively chiseled body, and a mystical hammer that lets him do amazing things.

In the comics, Thor's life has been in a bit of a downward spiral. He became unworthy of his hammer, Mjolnir. Being unworthy means he no longer can lift it or access its powers. He also lost his name and had an arm chopped off. How did all this happen, and what's next for Odinson?

During 2014's Original Sin story arc, Nick Fury gained the secrets of the universe in an attempt to save everything. As the heroes did not agree with Fury's method, a massive battle broke out.

During the fight, Fury put a stop to Thor by whispering something in his ear. Thor immediately became unworthy of wielding the power of Mjolnir. Crashing down upon the moon, Thor could no longer lift his hammer.

Thor eventually gave up trying to reclaim Mjolnir. The hammer was picked up by another, resulting in a new female Thor. Trying to adjust to his new situation, he rushed into a fight with Malekith, which ended with his arm getting chopped off. The god formerly known as Thor came to terms with his new situation, gave up his name, and became known as Odinson.

It's still unknown what dark secret fact Nick Fury whispered to kick all this into motion. Odinson hasn't been seen in recent comics but is making a return in a new series, The Unworthy Thor, this November.

Marvel has given us an exclusive first look at some of the pages of the first issue.

Odinson is determined to regain his worthiness. He discovers the existence of another Mjolnir from a dead universe. Looking at the cover, it appears to be the hammer belonging to the Ultimate Universe version of Thor. The recent Secret Wars comic event resulted in the Ultimate Universe being destroyed with certain characters (like Miles Morales) and elements making their way into the main Marvel Universe. Because of the power of this Mjolnir, Odinson won't be the only one seeking it out. Some of Marvel's greatest villains will be after it as well.

Whether or not Odison becomes worthy once again remains to be seen. The first issue of The Unworthy Thor #1 is on sale November 2.
