Tetris sells 100 million on mobile devices

[UPDATE] EA and Blue Planet Software confirm Alexey Pajitnov's hallmark puzzler has become "the best-selling mobile game of all time."

Tetris has been a staple in the gaming industry for more than 25 years. Created by Alexey Pajitnov while he was working at the Computer Centre in the Russian Academy of Science, the seminal puzzler was initially programmed for the Electronica 60 and has since seen iterations on platforms ranging from the original Game Boy to current-generation systems such as the Wii and Xbox 360.

Tetris hit the big time on the NES.

Today, the Associated Press reports that Tetris is the best-selling mobile game of all time, achieving in excess of 100 million paid downloads on cell phones globally. EA Mobile and license manager Blue Planet Software confirmed the news for the AP, and the publisher is expected to make its official announcement tomorrow.

[UPDATE] In its official announcement today, EA clarified the 100 million milestone, saying that it included only paid downloads on mobile phones since 2005.

EA declined to say how much revenue Tetris has generated, though the wire service notes that the iPhone edition of the game runs for $5. EA Mobile vice president Adam Sussman told the AP that Tetris is currently available in 60 countries and is compatible with 64,000 different handset models.

@ElusiveOne - Without you mentioning Henk I couldn't have noticed the link between Blue Planet and Bullet Proof, and Henk's involvement in my favorite games like Faceball 2000 and Yoshi's Cookie. Tetris was the REAL system seller behind the original Game Boy, which was also ported by Henk, although the lawsuits between Atari/Tengen and Nintendo/Bullet Proof was something of a mess. It's good to know Mr. Pajitnov's works get recognized.

Jeez, Pajitnov must be Oprah-rich!

Incredible game, brings a smile to my face to see it still doing so well.

@ralphikari - Yes, Mr. Pajitnov not only makes royalties from Tetris sales but he's still actively involved in its development. We received him and Henk Rogers in our offices in Montreal this week. Together they own Blue Planet Software and The Tetris Company, which controls the rights to the game. Mr. Pajitnov is a nice fellow. He even signed autographs today for fans/employees :)

Does this really suprise anyone? It is like the perfect game for when you are on the go or anytime for that matter. Every true gamer is also aware, Tetris is what turned Nintendo into a hand-held powerhouse that has not been dethroned once. Tetris is to puzzle games as Mario is to platformers, no other way to say it.

That's hardly surprising. What mobile games would challenge it? Snake? Well, Tetris is better.

Alexey Pajaitnov has moved to the US since the early 90's so I'm hoping he receives royalty from Tetris. He's one of the game creators I looked up to as a teenager in the rank of Richard Garriot, Jordan Mechner, Ken Williams, Warren Spector, Peter Molyneaux, etc. For the PS1 generation: The addictive Hexic game that comes with the Xbox 360 is also his work.

Got it for the mobile but now I want to for my PS3!!! What's the hold up? Just think, Tetris in HD on the big screen with online multi? eh? Somebody make it NOW!

I'd feel bad to be the maker of Tetris. He should be pretty rich by now if he weren't Russian in Soviet Unions. :(

I feel bad that Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris, never received money from the game. If only communism fell 6 years earlier, he'd be freaking rich.

It comes as no surprise, Tetris is a classic in puzzle gaming and even with its age it still is considered by many still one of the best puzzlers of all time. True it might be simplistic by today's standards but what it does it does well. Just the amount of games that have been at least partially inspired by Tetris shows its standing in Gaming History.

Tetris is awesome and very much alive still! There are numerous mini variations on most mobile versions (as well as other platforms) that keep the gameplay fresh. I particularly recommend Tetris Pop and Tetris Revolution on mobile for their original concepts. I must say I work for EA Mobile as lead artist on the next iteration of the game. It's a good way to get a daily Tetris fix!

I too am one of the many who have it for my phone, the only downside is the new music it has, I still prefer playing the old NES version.
