Test Drive Unlimited dev closed

Eden Games officially shut down after 15 years of operation.

Alone in the Dark and Test Drive Unlimited developer Eden Games has closed, the Lyon, France-based studio has confirmed (via Eurogamer).

The studio originally opened in 1998.

The official closure of Eden Games comes nearly a year after studio owner Atari labeled the studio as "discontinued operations," suggesting its shutdown was not far away.

The studio's final game was 2011's warmly received Test Drive Unlimited 2 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Previously developed titles include 2008's Alone in the Dark and the 2006 original Test Drive Unlimited.

In 2011, Eden Games formed a "symbolic strike" aimed at protesting a wave of forthcoming layoffs at the firm, believed to total as many as 80. A letter from Eden Games claimed "mismanagement" on the part of Atari and noted the publisher was not willing to enter negotiations with the studio.

I wish someone could have picked them up before this happened. I liked the test drive games :(

Did they make all the Alone in the Dark series or just the last one? If it's the latter then I don't care for this company anymore. They ruined the series with a half baked game. RIP

This is sad news. I loved the TDU games despite their faults. So many studios are closing down right now, it's really worrying

This is the backlash from ripping off your customers, TDU2 gave us nothing but they expected us to pay for it. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Loved both TDU games had some good times on there met some cool people too who I still game with now. And the feature that Forza desperately needs to introduce to get out of the stale cycle it is in CLUB v CLUB racing. Best fun I have had on xbox live was racing with the club.

This is sad news. As others have mentioned, Test Drive Unlimited 2 was a release that had alot of potential, missed out on largely because of Atari's corporate meddling, you could say the same of Alone in the Dark as well.

TDU2 had so much potential, but failed to be all it could be thanks to a crappy publisher.

I swear gamespot must put rations on eddies writing. Everytime I see that he wrote the "article" I know two things. One that it will be a 2 minute read tops and two I will be left with many questions that will never be answered. A+ journalism right there!

They made a lot of mistakes with TDU2.  The big mistake was what they did to the handling of the cars, it was a significantly worse than the original TDU which I liked a lot.  When you are making a game based around driving different cars, that's a pretty big mistake to make.  Shame they didn't get the opportunity to redeem themselves, but if I'm honest they had this coming really.

Well that is what you get when you go for mass appeal and don't think about your fan base. TDU2 was a letdown for the people who liked TDU's simulation style driving and car handling.

Well, Dev's dont get any support from the community when they don't even patch there games properly or look after the community, TDU2 was a huge disappointment in this regard

I guess it's a taste issue, for me the TDU series always was like a Steven Seagal movie, you watch/play it only if there is nothing else there to watch/play...

Really wish I was a billionaire to help every game company out there struggling. Especially indie game companys. It always hurts when a game company shuts down :(

Never good to hear this sort of news. My thoughts are with the people who lost their jobs and their families!

the first test drive unlimited was one of the first games of this generation to really immerse me. one of the reasons is because the game takes place on the island of oahu in the state of hawaii which is where i spent nearly the first 23 years of my life so it was nice to see familiar landmarks even if much of the island wasnt properly depicted (i.e. changed to better fit a driving/racing game). it was almost like visiting back home through my console, heh. i wish eden well and thank them for the good times, may you all move on to better jobs.

I sure hope someone takes up the license to Kya: Dark Lineage and finishes the story.

That game is still in my top 3 favorite platformers ever.

It is the platformer that used the wind element better than any other platformer has ever done.

The combat was fun, the gameplay was great, the puzzles were cleverly done,  the AI was hilarious especially making the Wolfen fight each other, the music is still one of my favorite music scores of any game (minus the combat music) and it was just an overall great game.  A truly hidden Gem.

It really deserves a sequel.

Test Driver 2 was a huge miss opportunity, of Being a true MMO with 2 huge maps it would have been the perfect OW Racing MMO, and I mean some thing on par with NFSW, no other Racing Open world game I palyed gave me the freedom TDU2 did, I spent countless hours just planing a trajectory and then just drive it and enjoying the maps, it was something else entirely, Club Cruises for the Win, its sad to see that Eden going, I hope some day we wil see a TDU3 or an actual MMO made out of the TDU franchise.

TDU2 was all about freedom.

You can't have that in any other racing game.

This is sad news for me. TDU2 is one of my favorite racing games. I know people criticized the characters being cheesy and over the top, but I think it made the game very charming in a funny way. There's no other racing game that has the MMO feeling that TDU gives you. I love the customization of your character, and you can even buy homes and customize them as well. It's like an online open world sims game with cars and racing.

Sad to hear but they completely killed the Alone in the Dark game. The controls were a mess, the combat awful and if you put up with all that they pulled that "roots of evil" crap at the end to make you grind and pad the length of the game! If you do crap like that you cant expect to win over many fans and purchases!

I was addicted to TDU, never got TDU 2 though, I majorly regret that decision, may buy some time soon

What the hell has been going in the industry? Studios are being shot down left and right, it's becoming a new trend.

I thought TDU 1 wasn't just a great genre filler to open world but had a high design structure and polish release compared to contemporary games that suffer due to complacent patching.

R.I.P Eden. Your work is greatly embraced in loving memory.

TDU wasn't all that great.  It was okay, but lacked direction.  I did like Alone in the Dark Inferno, though.  People hated that game for no reason.  It wasn't perfect, and a bit buggy, but still really good.

Eve of Destruction is by far my favorite of the newer Test Drive games.  Highly underrated.

TDU2 had a lot of flaws, i agree.  But i could not care less.  Just driving alone on the endless roads was enough to satisfy me.

I liked quite a few of their games (Kya, V-Rally 3, NS V Rally and the TDU1&2).  Hopefully the workers will be picked up by other companies soon!

@jsmoke03 Sigh, don't cry for them, they are extremely well off... Fact is, that everything they used was provided to them by the company until it dried up.

@zenogandia It's the next big gaming crash sadly.  It's the same thing happening as it was back then, oversaturation of mediocre-subpar games, too many consoles, not enough really good games to support them properly.

@fredyellowone This. Forza Horizon tried to understand the concept and only succeeded in proving they could not grasp it. Please somebody save the day.
