Tekken Revolution a free-to-play PlayStation 3 exclusive

Will launch on June 11 with an initial roster of eight characters.

by

Namco Bandai has unveiled Tekken Revolution for the PlayStation 3.

Unveiled via GameSpot's E3 2013 preview (at 19:30), the free-to-play fighter will be released on June 11. Tekken Revolution will allow players to spar against AI players in its Arcade Mode and human rivals in online ranked and non-ranked matches.

For the first time in the Tekken series, individual characters are now able to be specifically upgraded, with each character possessing Strength, Endurance, and Vigor attributes. Namco Bandai says the game will also feature new Special Arts and Critical Arts moves.

Specifics on additional characters, or how microtransactions could affect the free-to-play title, were not disclosed.

Tekken Revolution's initial roster of eight characters will include King, Paul, Lili, Marshall Law, Asuka, Steve, Alisa, and Lars.

The last game in the Tekken series, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012.

This game is totally fun! I think it's best Tekken since Tekken 5!!!

First of all, I want to say Namco Bandai is not a charity, they can't give the entire game to for free. This game costs millions and milions of dollars to make. Secondly, they run the risk of losing money to only a handful for pay for it. To me, F2P is a good business model to casual gamers who have not played this title to get into the game and spend money on it. Ultimately, it is the gamers choice to spend money or not on the game.

it's Kazuya..not Alisa..you unlock Alisa and more characters later on as you progress the game :D

An experiment to see if you're stupid enough to buy into a F2P scam. Yeah. It'll be a big hit with the same people who love on disc DLC and the like. How about instead, they make a game, charge $60 for it, and when you buy it you get all the content available at the start? Remember those days? I loved them too.

It's free to play, but good luck winning against someone who bought a bunch of EXP and maxed out his character.

Sounds like a brilliant idea. As long as buying all the content doesn't exceed $80 I'm all in.

Free to play? Can't beat that, I'll try it.

So... State of Decay is at #1 spot on GS top games list. The Last of Us got a lower score than SOD here, but got a perfect score from virtually all the critics, and it's not even present on GS top 10 games list.

Why, GS?

Why not just go pick up TTT2 or T6 for cheap.

F2P on a fighter makes no sense to me. By the time you have bought a lot of characters, stages, modes, and appearance items you will be close to full retail price anyway.

What ever happened to Tekken X Street Fighter?  I was actually very interested that but I guess it got cancelled.

I could see this as being a great idea for fighting games from now on. F2P, and pay for whatever fighters and customizations that you want instead of shelling out $60 for everything.

This could be a good idea, as long as the remaining characters are well priced: Tekken 6 had 35 characters total, 35-8=27 DLC characters, so they need to be no more than £1.50/$2.00 each (otherwise to unlock them all will end up over retail!)

Though I do predict them gouging us at £3/$4 per character, I do hope otherwise...

sony are indeed making all the right moves f2p on the ps3 and the ps4 is getting a shit load of launch f2p games nice

No thanks I'll stick with Tekken Tag 2 & Tekken 6

It'll be interesting to see how this fares. I'll be giving it a go, but I wonder how much content you will actually get for free e.g. trophy support. I'm actually surprised that 8 characters will be available for free, I thought it would be 2-4.

It has Marshall Law in it for free. I'm good. Let the backflip-kick-spamming begin! :P

I'm a happy guy since my main is in the initial roster. Asuka FTW!

Wait, what?  The franchises two MAIN CHARACTERS Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima aren't available from the start?  Namco's taking stupid pills.  None of the 8 characters available at the start qualify as main character material.

You don't have a Tekken game without the main hero or it's former main hero.

@razor599 They still use the animations from the first Tekken game on the Playstation!

@istuffedsunny It's not pay2win. The only stuff you can buy are credits to play online in a shorter timeframe if you wanna play nonstop.

Kilvoctu-san
Kilvoctu-san

@istuffedsunny Beauty of Tekken is that any skilled player can shut down some buffoon who spent money on stats, that is under your assumption purchasing power is possible.

Incidentally, seems it's fun to assume every F2P game is automatically P2W, I guess..?

dragonsama
dragonsama

@SilentAssassin No no it is not awesome.  They charge $4.00 a character for DLC.  Tekken on average has about 30 chracters in it so that's $88 for the complete game.

Now add in the "upgrades" they charge for.  If you want to be competitive on-line you will have to buy them and you can easily send $160 for 1 game.  This kind of thing is BS.  Release a full game with all the features or don't bother.

ExtremePhobia
ExtremePhobia

@StonerDemon The top ten list is automatically generated - you know that right? The score aside, why would a game that hasn't been released yet be getting more hits than one that has? You go to the page once (or possibly not at all depending) to see the review/video and then continue on your merry way whereas a game that's already out has plenty of other information for you to look at.

PrpleTrtleBuBum
PrpleTrtleBuBum

@svaubel Why not pick T5, T4 or even T3?

If this game has no changes or improvements you're right, but if it is another evolution then you're not.

Duggs26
Duggs26

@WhiteStormy Quite the opposite, if you take a look at the new features it's very likely that this game is a test for Tekken X Street Fighter.

This game now has supers and criticals, with flashy move effects. It also has combo breakers.

Harada also said last year that he wanted to make the female characters faces look "cuter", look at Asuka and Lili.

Duggs26
Duggs26

@hunter8man I'd rather have the full game personally, but for a one-off it seems like a good idea.

Duggs26
Duggs26

@DJ_KooPee I don't see that many characters being available, but if they were they'd probably have some sort of bundle to unlock them all.

SWALAMALODE

@Strider8009 why does everyone keep asking bout SFvsTekken ? It came out 3 or 4 years ago on disc and sucked - dont ever mix the 2 again

Duggs26

@Maxx_the_Slash Paul? Law? King? I see them as main characters more than I see Kazuya/Jin as main characters personally.

conquerorsaint
conquerorsaint

@Maxx_the_Slash probably why it's free to play. they're the premium main characters you'll have to DLC purchase probably.

Is this DLC character route the reason Harada stormed out of Bandai Namco offices the past week or so?

telaros
telaros

@Kilvoctu-san A good portion are, or simply lock you out of most of the game world's content like most mabi-nogi games, or however you spell it.

I believe it'll mostly just be the usual Namco share of selling you characters. Skins. And the usual fair like when they teamed up with Capcom for that whole selling you back 12 characters that are already on the disc. Course, most of that was Capcom, with Namco's blessing.

SWALAMALODE
SWALAMALODE

well I paid nothing and the first character THE GAME unlcked (not me by using coins or whatever else) was the one I wanted (Bryan Fury).  So I dont need to spend any money for anything - and his moves and combos are just like the old games

Duggs26
Duggs26

Please link the article which says the characters will be $4 each. Just a reminder, you're not being forced to buy all the characters.

As Harada-san would say; stop jumping the gun.

Ganondorf75
Ganondorf75

@SWALAMALODE @Strider8009I think ppl are asking about Tekken x SF: which is, supposedly, set in the Tekken/3d realm, with SF characters in it. As opposed to SF x Tekken: which was Tekken characters put into the 2d/SF setting.

@Spinnerweb I'm wondering where's Nina? :(

Maxx_the_Slash
Maxx_the_Slash

@Duggs26 @Maxx_the_Slash Yes, because King and Paul Phoenix control militaristic companies waging literal war against each other, with one of those factions actually being called "Tekken Force", right? Oh yeah, that's Kazuya and Jin.  All 8 of the default characters are minor.

@conquerorsaint They're starting to screw him over now? I hope he doesn't take it up the rear like Odashima. anyway no that can't be...I wonder how bad Super Smash Bros will be now

sanchango

@Duggs26 I think he's mixing tekken with DOA5 Ultimate, it's becoming free to play with only 4 characters. To unlock the rest you need to pay 4 bucks.

Duggs26
Duggs26

And importance to the plot does not mean priority over iconic characters in a spin off game.

Maxx_the_Slash
Maxx_the_Slash

@Duggs26 I'm sorry that I feel two CEOs waging war against each other are more important to the plot of the entire series more than a luchadore entering a tournament to win prize money for an orphanage or a street thug entering a tournament to do... god knows what.

Jin's and Kazuya's actions against each other effects the lives of EVERY character on the roster, while King's quest to save an orphanage and Paul Phoenix's desire to do... whatever it is that he's in the tournaments for... only effect themselves.

Sorry, popularity with fans does not mean important to the plot.

Duggs26
Duggs26

So you're saying all characters except the Mishimas and Kazamas are minor? Christ.

I think you're missing the bigger picture here, this is an arcade fighting game. The Iconic characters of the series are characters like Heihachi & Kaz, Nina, Paul, Law, Yoshimitsu, King and a few others.

Yes the Mishima's and Kazamas are seen as main character but I think you're forgetting, 99% of Tekken players or people who have previously played Tekken pay no attention to the storyline, and pay more attention to the classic characters which stand out. When I say Tekken, the first thing that comes to peoples mind is a fighting game, with a wrestler in a jaguar max, a space ninja, a crazy ass flipping bruce lee guy, a blonde assassin and some guy who's hair stands up. They don't think of a dysfunctional family who does anything they can to kill eachother and start huge wars.
