Super Smash Bros. Wii and 3DS won't feature cross-platform play

But the console and handheld versions will be able to interact with one another.

The recently announced Super Smash Bros. Wii and Super Smash Bros. 3DS won't feature cross-platform play, developer Sora Ltd. has said.

In an interview with Joystiq, director Masahiro Sakurai said cross-play between the two games wouldn't be possible due to both games having completely different stages.

There will be interactivity between the two versions of the game, Sakurai adds, mentioning that customised characters will be able to be sent from the 3DS version to the Wii U version. The customisations weren't specified in detail, only that they wouldn't be alternative costumes.

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS will be released in 2014.

 So... I don't get what the complaining is about so far. The interaction mentioned here doesn't seem like it's going to detract from either version of the game and I don't see a necessity to crossplay for this game.  It's Nintendo, so few of their choices will be based around making online play better, and this choice doesn't seem to effect local play.

  If you have the 3DS version and run into a friend with the same version,  you can play together.  If you find out that your friend instead has the Wii U version, you grab another controller and play the Wii U version with them. No need to hold both versions back by trying to force them to play nice with each other, especially in a game like this where even slight delays on one end could easily ruin the fun and give an unfair advantage.

How are there 3DS limitations? They say that they're having trouble with multi characters such as ice climbers but the 3DS version should be able to run just as good as brawl can because the 3DS processor is better than the wii. And Ice Climbers were on the MELEE on the GAMECUBE which obviously has an even LESS powerful processor. And if I could connect my GBA to my gamecube and play four swords adventures or battle on pokemon Coliseum/Gale of darkness why cant we link our 3ds to our WiiU and beat the crap out of each other with our friends on smash bros? How is this a problem Nintendo?

I'm just excited Smash Bros. has gone portable AND 3D! Who cares about Cross-play and when has that ever happened before other than plugging in a handheld into a console to play on the TV?

I hope this wii U version adds some great items just like they did with smash ball. I don't want this to be the exact same game as the last one w. diff characters. Major upgrade plz~

why would people want cross play?.. if u have the wii u version and a friend with the 3DS version then you could both play on the wii u version.. wheres the problem? even if it had cross play game would be unbalanced by controlls, maybe, maybe not as the 3DS layout is very similar to the wii u's controllers... besides both versions would need to have same stages

Why make it so they can interact with one another then?

Good good. You can create your own custimized characters. I'll be spending a lot of time for that but anyways, here is the important question:

Will Tiki from Fire Emblem (nintendo series) be in the new SSB?

There is literally no reason she shouldn't be in there as:

-She's been playable for 3 games (which is more than any other character in the series although Anna has had more cameos but not been playable)

- She was in the very first game of the series and is an important person to Marth (especially in FE 3 and 12)

- She is a female which would answer the outcry for more female characters

- She is a manakete (the most special one in the world) so she would be able to represent them

- She is the strongest canon character in the series (stronger than Ike or any other main character in the series)

- She represents Naga which is basically the goddess in Fire Emblem

- She would represent both the old and new games with being in the very first game ever made (and central to the story) and also being in the new Fire Emblem Awakening (and in the story).

- She would be able to have a unique moveset based on her being able to transform in a dragon and also being able to use different classes in Awakening

- Has one of the best theme songs in the series along with getting a hold of the voice actor would be incredibly easy as the FE A was made recently.

- etc.

Nintendo won E3! I can't wait for the WiiU and 3DS to sell millions. I'm going to enjoy watching Sony, Microsoft, and EA eat shit!

I love this game and im excited...But cut the bullshit already. Why are you trying to force people to buy both 3ds and the Wii U. It's like "Hey wanna experience this game? Then buy Wii U and 3ds". Are we supposed to be freaking millionaires all of a sudden? F*ck this. I don't care if you can "Send customised characters from 3ds to Wii U" I only have 3ds Xl, so yeah im gonna get this on 3ds. They did the same thing with Monster hunter 3 Ultimate, that Wii U has Online but 3ds doesn't (i have the 3ds version anyway), they KNOW that they could've added online on 3ds as well....Don't tell me that this is the same.....Oh please no. Go to hell Nintendo with your stupid "buy 2 consoles for 1 game" idea.

@BLaverock I can think back to the N64. If you had the Gameboy pack for the N64 controller you import Pokemon from the GB games into Pokemon Stadium. You could also play your GB version on your T.V threw PK Stadium which had a pretty sweat x2 setting. Sped up training Pokemon without cheating.

@Gothic-360 It's just that if you want to keep playing away from your friends, but with them, you can't.  Admittedly I had a lot of fun playing Street Fighter X Tekken and Playstation Allstars with PSVita owners via crossplay.  It increases the player pool quite a bit.

so_hai

@Gothic-360 I don't get crossplay either. Nintendo aren't the money-grabbing re-hashers that everyone portrays them as. Otherwise, they could secure more sales easily with crossplay.

kreegan64

 @lordquasar They like making their game versions interact. They want to make differences in the two versions but don't want to force people to buy both version to get the same or most of the same experience. So if you have the 3ds version and a friend wants a customized character (however that'll turn out) you can send that character (this is just an example, don't know how they'll make it work)

Kinda like trading in the pokemon games.

@JoInfo I am a nintendo fan but i dont know where you got that conclusion from lol i mean there were 2 console launches that completely took the spotlight, the biggest news on Nintendos part was prob smash bros or pokemon x and y updates but by no means did Nintendo win E3 2013, next year? maybe if they hold a conference.

@Wreexx It's better than making you pay extra to use second hand games and making you have to go online once every 24 hours

nintendude01
nintendude01

@Wreexx No one is forcing you to buy both. Each game will be a unique experience with different stages. You have a choice and those choices are buy one version only, buy both versions, or don't buy any versions at all. It is really that easy. If you want both then save up some money it is easy and their is plenty of time to do it. Stop making things sound so hard.

@jacquelineferre @JoonKimDMD

It's a fighting game, while the overall mechanics will stay the same (because changing that up could very well mess up what makes Smash great), Sakurai has always done a great job in making each Smash Brothers feel unique from previous entries by changing up the physics and how the game handles.

Overkillhazard
Overkillhazard

@oslnpls But the problem is that with Smash Brothers, Wii U players will almost certainly be using a better controller than the 3DS control scheme (perhaps a modded Gamecube controller, or a Gamecube-style controller made for the Wii U to play Smash).  Since almost no one on console would be expected to use anything less, it would create an unbalanced environment which would see 3DS owners losing almost unanimously.

Another thing, unlike the crossplay compatible games you mentioned, Smash Bros on 3DS, based on what I have seen (the graphic differences: cel-shaded 3D on 3DS and higher resolution textures without cel-shading on Wii U), suggests fundamental (likely engine based) differences in these games which would prevent compatibility.

@Helios_Sun @TalesOfGod My fault I forgot!

Well, it is in the first game in the series (jap version only), FE 3 (my first game in the series (and favourite) but only in jap version), FE 11 and 12. Also, FE 13/Awakening also counts I guess.

I doubt you'll play the other ones as they are older, slower and in japanese but you're welcome to try.

Well, I didn't reveal anything game breaking so I guess it is fine.

@Helios_Sun I said what I did because Nintendo actually showcased good, wholesome games. All Sony and Microsoft showcased were flamboyant, window dressed, open world turd sandwiches. I think if Nintendo did a press conference this year, and showcased the line up that they did in Nintendo Direct, people would've cheered. More systems would be sold.

But that's just my opinion. I'm more of an old-school gamer. I wasn't raised in the "everything 3D" Playstation era. I come from the NES days.

ziqi92
ziqi92

@Helios_Sun @JoInfo Nintendo skipped out on the press conference this year because they wanted to bypass gaming journalists directly. It's a real shame that these days, people bash on Nintendo simply because it's the "in" thing to do, especially journalists.

Marky360
Marky360

Well they really do want you to buy both that's exactly what Nintendo's trying to do here but you can't fault them for that as it is a shrewd business move that gives incentives to thoughs who purchase both consoles without completely alianating those who only have one or the other.

Wreexx
Wreexx

@nintendude01 @Wreexx Your the reason why they keep doing this. Defending this crap. Them saying that "3ds version will be different from Wii U version, and Wii U version will be different from 3ds version" gives player the feeling that they miss out on something, and that's how i feel, i feel like im not giving all the content i should be given If i don't buy a damn Wii U console. Nintendo figured out the perfect business strategy how to rob our wallets, congratsulations on that Nintendo.

@jacquelineferre

Major upgrades can mean anything, not just the way the game plays. I would say a much improved single player campaign would be a major upgrade, or a better level editor, more customization, more modes.

jacquelineferre

@abHS4L88 Super Smash games are good but always following a safe formula and there is nothing wrong with that all I'm pointing is that his expectatives of major upgrades will most likely not be fullfiled.

@TalesOfGod @Helios_Sun Im hoping they will get re released in english (the FE with Roy), still got to get the gamecube version which sells for $98 Au on ebay so when i find it cheap ill get it, also looking for the game boy advanced ones.

@ziqi92 @Helios_Sun @JoInfo To be honest at the time Xbox one was getting smashed, still is but it(dont know if it would have mattered) would have been stupid to have a press conference with out bringing out that New Zelda hd game they almost revealed, but they could have show cased the additional battery pack for the Wii u ? presented new up coming e shop games? ect.

Marky360

Well those devs need to make sure the game I get day one actually works and isn't a glitchtastic broken mess that just gets patched later like SKYRIM otherwise I'll be buying my games used and giving hem nothing.

Marky360
Marky360

I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to be able to take that core triple A experience they get form there PS3 on the go with there Vita it just doesn't make sense. If you like the game at home on your console why wouldn't want to continue playing it while your out on your portable. Having its own unique experiences is good and all but if those unique experiences don't live up to the console experience then what's the point of me playing it? like Arkham Origins why would I buy the black gate version on Vita/3DS which is a lesser 2d sidescroller when I can get the full 3D experience on my home console there's just no point but if the Vita/3DS version was the same as the console version then I'd buy it as well as the console version because of its portability it allows me to take my larger home console experience with me.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Marky360

Not really, and I was just looking at the sales of the PS Vita's games, none of the multiplatform games sold more than 400k units. The type of gamers you're talking about are really only the hardcore and well off types of gamers. Most are not willing to shell out an extra $50 just to take their game on the go. If anything, the presence of all these mutiplats on the Vita have hurt its sales instead of improving it because it looks more like a portable PS3 where you still have to buy the same games for the most part (only Sony as far as I know offers the Vita version free) instead of distinguishing itself as a powerful handheld that has its own unique library of games.

Take a look at Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, the 3DS sales are actually really good, while the Wii U sales are rather weak, yet there's cross play available. By your argument, the Wii U sales should've been strong since most players who got Monster Hunter Ultimate for the 3DS that own a Wii U should've gotten both. I actually debated getting both but that means I would've had to pay over $100 to play the same game, just over two consoles, while I do enjoy Monster Hunter a lot, I'd much rather play something else on my 3DS.

TalesOfGod
TalesOfGod

@Wreexx @nintendude01 You obviously haven't seen the Microsoft and Sony fans. It's been much worse over there so I really doubt that you can blame Nintendo that much for this. Also, yes. There is a difference.

You don't like the difference in the versions? Guess what. How about we bring down/degrade both games so that they will work exactly like you said. The home consoles have much more power= more content is available and the handhelds have portability = accessability at any time (and 3D in the 3ds' case) which is why there are differences.

If you don't like the 3ds' versions of games then sell your 3ds and buy a wii U. If not then be content with what you get and stop bitching.

Marky360
Marky360

I don't agree with this sentiment. Giving the portable console a game with features comparable to that of its home console brothren doesn't lower sales of either it'd actually raises sales. In the case of the Playstation Vita/PS3 this tact raised sales of the PS Vita especially with cross buy because now you can take the larger experience you have on your home console on the go with your portable. This is why a lot of ppl are upset the PS Vita version of Arkham Origins isn't a exact port of the PS3 version but instead a smaller lesser experience. In the case of the Wii U/3DS this would raise the sales of the Wii U because ppl who already own the 3DS version will want to have that same portable game experience but on a much larger screen and in High Definition. With the console and handheld versions being different this doesn't really raise the sales of either device because if the portable version isn't to the lvl of the console version ppl will likely skip the portable version in favor of the console version.

Marky360
Marky360

I kinda agree with u on this statement it's like the ppl who are willing to blindly accept MS's sharing games policy just to play an Xbox One. Some ppl just don't care if there being screwed over though.

Marky360

To bad Nintendo doesn't do cross buy like Sony does maybe that would alviate some of the ire you have toward Nintendo.

@abHS4L88 @Wreexx @comb5 @nintendude01 I don't really see the big deal? Its on two consoles.....you don't NEED BOTH to get a full experience of either game, their inter connectivity isn's paramount to the game....its a non-issue.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Wreexx @comb5 @nintendude01

Let's put this into business perspective. Smash Brothers has always been a massive system seller for Nintendo's home consoles. For the first time ever, it's going to be available for their handhelds. HOWEVER, creating the same exact experience for both would most definitely serve to make the game lose selling power for the Wii U, especially since the 3DS is selling incredibly well. Differentiate the two so that the Wii U version will still have strong selling power since the system itself is not selling so hot right now.

Why would Nintendo ruin the selling power of one of their biggest system sellers for home consoles? Like the others were saying, if you don't want both, don't get both, most likely by themselves, both will still be highly enjoyable games. They didn't have to make a 3DS version, so instead you'd HAVE to buy a Wii U in order to experience the next game.

Look at the PS Vita, for the first year, it mainly got ports of PS3 games, for the most part, this was a terrible thing because people would rather get the game on the console they already own, not have to buy a new one for it.

nintendude01
nintendude01

@Wreexx @comb5 @nintendude01 Keep in mind that if both games had the same content that what would be the point of having to buy it on 3DS or Wii U. Making them different is fair for those individuals who only have just one of those systems. Remember 3DS can't do what Wii U can. I don't question it because I am one of those lucky few that managed to save up money to be able to afford both a 3DS and Wii U so yeah.

Wreexx
Wreexx

@nintendude01 @Wreexx Im tired of people like you who just accept everything their being given and not questioning things at all.

Wreexx
Wreexx

@comb5 @Wreexx @nintendude01 Im mad, because this is just an attempt of them so that people buy Wii U as well who only have 3ds xl. I would not be mad if both games would be released simultaneously and BOTH versions would have the same content, only that Wii U players get better graphics and smoother framerates, that would be fine for me. Now, their putting exlusive content on 3ds, and exclusive content on Wii U. That's stupid, i don't understand why this is not upsetting for you.

nintendude01
nintendude01

@Wreexx @nintendude01 I am not trying to defend anyone here. All I am saying is if you want both then save money to get both. Honestly I am only going to get the Wii U version. Don't need to buy the same game twice adding new stages is not enough for me to warrant a 3ds version purchase for me. My point is I am tired of hearing people like you whining about the little things. Don't mean to offend you in any way just so you know.

comb5
comb5

@Wreexx @nintendude01 The Wii U is much more powerful than the 3DS because it is a home console. Why would you not expect there to be differences? The 3DS has a way better library than the Wii U right now anyways. And it will continue to be that way until later into the year, so I don't really know why you're so mad.

Marky360
Marky360

I don't know I wouldn't put it past either of them they do after all make money off the DLC sold on there respective networks so its plausible they could have require the publishers to include DLC to be sold on there respective network in order to get there game on the system.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Wreexx @J3lackJ3ird

So by your logic, any BS decisions 3rd parties make for their games on Sony/Microsoft's systems is Sony/Microsoft's fault, not the 3rd party?

Okay so I guess I can blame Sony/Microsoft for pushing me away from fighters due to their DLC characters instead of having unlocking them through actually playing the game, not Capcom. I guess it's also their fault that we see the cash cow Call of Duty every year, not Activison. See how stupid this sounds?
