StarCraft: Ghost has never been officially cancelled

When asked if long-dormant StarCraft spin-off might ever be released, Blizzard says "maybe."

Long-dormant third-person adventure spin-off StarCraft: Ghost has never been formally cancelled, Blizzard has reiterated.

Diablo III senior designer Matthew Burger has clarified the status of StarCraft: Ghost to Official PlayStation Magazine UK. When asked if the game was still in active development, Burger said "it’s on hold. It has never been cancelled."

When asked if StarCraft: Ghost might one day be released, Burger said "maybe."

StarCraft: Ghost was one of Blizzard's first attempts to break into console gaming at the turn of the century. The spin-off was announced for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in 2002, with development duties handed to Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified developer nStigate Games (nee Nihilistic Software). Development changed hands in 2004 to Swingin' Ape Studios, which was bought by Blizzard in 2005. StarCraft: Ghost was then put on hold in 2006.

StarCraft: Ghost's protagonist, Nova, has appeared in both Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty and Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

They'll have to completely start over. I don't plan on ever seeing SC: Ghost, ever.

I've been waitin for this for MOST of my life. So you'll understand if I ain't exactly holding my breath for ya, Blizzard. Don't get me wrong, I still love ya, but yes, you are officially the slowest-ass company in the world.

this is game is the reason I bought a PS2 and moved into the console culture. Maybe if Diablo III does well enough on console Blizzard will return to this game.

Just hope it doesn't turn into another duke nukem forever. *crosses fingers*

This isn't news, it's the same line we've been getting. Every year there's that one guy at the Starcraft panel at Blizzcon asking about Ghost, and every year it's the same coy answer: "it's not cancelled", "maybe...someday...if you're good". Just because the quote is now in PlayStation Magazine or in GameSpot's news feed doesn't mean anything has changed. At best it's years away. So everyone needs to chill out until they actually announce something...THEN we can start with the "Blizzard games are in the crapper", "Duke Nukem Forever: Ghost", ect.

Well, at least they got a cool character out of it.  Nova's a nice addition to Starcraft lore.

What? Their D3 is not the reincarnation of a God and WoW numbers continue to decline so they dig up old projects which they left when their eyes were in the form of a $ bill? Ok...nice try.

Duke Nukem Forever Syndrome all over again.  I hate it with  passion when developers don't give a clear answer after all this time.  Either it is scheduled for released or it isn't, there is no "maybe" Dear Mr. Burger, GFY!

Damnit Blizzard, with games like Starcraft, Warcraft III, Diablo 2, and vanilla WoW, you had me willing to buy anything you ever put out. And then you had to come along and release the terror that was Diablo 3...

I'd still be very interested in this honestly, I love my stealth action games, but needless to say I'm much more dubious about products Blizz puts out these days.

PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE, I want this game so bad!!!!

I don't care. Blizzard turned into a 'broader appeal' company a few years ago, their games are meant to appease the most common denominator now.

hoo - ....meh.  id like to get excited about this, but my interest in and hype about this game died many moons ago.  way too little way too late.

Starcraft Ghost - Thanks to the new always online feature of the new Xbox, when you're cloaked, if you lose internet connection your cloaking turns off and a big target appears on you.

I have the Noval it was originally supposed to star Kerrigan but decided to create a new character on account that "Kerrigans story had already been told" and created Nova and now Noras story has been told in a novel and continued in Starcraft 2.  Just let this die already.  No one in their right mind wants to buy a game thats been in development for more then four years.

lol Oh wow, I remember this. I also remember pretty pretty bummed when I found out it wasn't going to release.

Ahh, the annual “StarCraft Ghost is not cancelled” announcement. I knew something was missing this year. It’s officially spring now, people! Start cleaning those attics and clearing out those garages, because like Punxsutawney Phil seeing its own shadow every Groundhog’s Day, Blizzard has reminded us again that we’ll be getting StarCraft Ghost someday, sometime, in some form!

Blizzard will release SC: Ghost as a lead-in to when they release SC3 in July, 2137. Just sayin... this game will no longer by "sci-fi" but instead be a "modern shooter" by the time anyone plays it.

Better let the project die. Chris Metzen will surely destroy more the Starcraft lore with Ghost.

starcraft ghost: with graphics that crappy (2001-ish), its no wonder they stopped developing it by 2006.

but then again, blizzard released diablo 3 in 2012 with graphics that look 2003-ish.

I hear Gearbox is great at taking dormant and beloved projects under their wing, f-ing them up and then passing the buck...

I can already picture Randy Pitchford geeking out about how thrilled he is to be working on Starcraft, how near and dear it is to his heart and how his team is committed to delivering the game Starcraft fans have been waiting over a decade for... then talking about how the 3.0/10 scores are because Gearbox outsourced the campaign to Terminal Reality and the multiplayer to Nihilistic.

Blizzard was once one of my favorite devs.

I just recently became annoyed with them because HotS actually RETCONNED the Zerg's origin/backstory from StarCraft 1. Their writers seem to have no artistic integrity or respect for the canon.

Would be great if Ghost actually gets released some day but at this point I have very low expectations for future Blizzard products.

They're trying to keep the hype after their disappointing PS4 Diablo port reveal, and their Warcraft TCG.

I want Blizzard Entertainment to get Starcraft: Ghost back in development. It is just with their recent greed with Diablo III that I feel like they will not be creative as they were when it was first in development.
