Star Wars MMO The Old Republic delays its next expansion

Galactic Strongholds now expected to roll out in August instead of June; BioWare says "The result will be a far more compelling experience."

BioWare announced this week that the latest expansion for MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, called Galactic Strongholds, has been delayed from June to August.

"When playing early builds of Galactic Strongholds it became that clear that our June Early Access date was simply not enough," senior producer Bruce Maclean said in a blog post on the game's website. "For this to truly feel like an expansion, it needs to include the full set of features, including those originally coming later in the year."

What this means is that BioWare has shifted the start-date for Subscriber Early Access to Galactic Strongholds from June 24 to August 19. Moving the date back allows BioWare to "deliver to you the most features at the highest level of quality," Maclean said.

"The result will be a far more compelling experience, including additional features such as the ability to place your vehicles and pets in your Stronghold and for Guilds to conquer planets," he added.

The additional development time allows BioWare to add the following elements to the Galactic Strongholds expansion:

  • Conquest Events: use the power of your Stronghold to dominate these events and earn rewards
  • Guild Flagships will now offer expanded functionality for Guilds:
    • Provide powerful buffs to Guild members from orbit
    • Transport entire groups to your personal coordinates instantaneously
    • Compete in Conquest Events to conquer entire planets
  • New Stronghold: Tatooine Homestead
  • Vehicles, Mounts, Pets, and Companion Characters can be placed as decorations in Strongholds

The original Galactic Strongholds feature-list:

  • 3 unique Player Strongholds, one on each Capital World plus the Nar Shaddaa Sky Palace
  • 2 faction-specific Guild Flagships (Valor-class Cruiser for the Republic and Harrower-class Dreadnaught for the Empire)
  • Legacy Stronghold Storage
  • Ability to gain Prestige tracked on Prestige Leaderboards
  • Hundreds of Decorations to discover and collect

The Galactic Strongholds expansion for The Old Republic will launch for Preferred players in September and then for all free players in October.

So they took a look at The Repopulations funding campaign and panicked.

Better slap some minimilistic version of Star Wars Galaxies player housing in years after release!

Keep shuffling them deckchairs EA...

(We want more actual class story content damn it, not player houses)

Wow people here are morons......SWTOR is far from dead, and that's a fact. They just released content featuring raids on Tython and Korriban, leading to a new storyline.

no patch or expansion exists to fix a fundamental lack of scope and creativity in the game...  a very poor copy/paste of wow mechanics and classes...

"People are still playing this game?" Comments x50 . Yes...Yes let your hatred flow through you, and know that no matter what you say it will live on like a proverbial middle finger to you face. (Insert Sith Laugh)

Obligatory, "make KOTOR 3 instead of wasting time on this".

That is all you need to do.

Dont expand this game...Trash this game and make a REAL Star Wars mmo with Open world and open space flight / dogfighting. open pvp and better constructed planets that feel like planets and not onrails stages.

Those stupid "People are still playing this?" comments are appearing again. Oh yeah...this game is soooo dead it's releasing regular expansions two or three times a year. I mean, they must be dead in the water? No one is playing this game!

Okay I'm sorry, your logic is just too stupid for me to continue. Seriously, you uninformed seem to think you know what you're talking about without using common sense and basic reasoning. If the game was anywhere NEAR as dead as you claimed, then why is it releasing more content each year than in the previous? With all of that money they couldn't possibly be making if the game was as dead as you thought? I know that to a bunch of haters anything can make sense, but anyone with even a basic understanding of how business works would laugh in your face.

Oh Bioware...they carted the well beaten horse corpse off to Arby's two years back and it seems that nobody bothered to inform them. I'm imagining them as a sad little child wearing an over-sized Boba Fett helmet poking at a dark brown stain on the ground where the horse USED to be with a Episode 2 Anakin Skywalker Extend-o lightsaber.

I would have added that the child was crying as he/she/IT continued to poke the horse juice stain, but that would falsely imply that anyone still working for EA/Bioware is in possession of a soul to begin with...at least one they didn't wrench from the unwilling husk of a once promising franchise. I'd imagine they have an entire Raiders of the Lost Arc-esque warehouse full of THOSE souls by now, if they haven't been devoured in some unspeakable dark ritual that is.

People are still playing this game?  How?

Should have named it Star Wars :Incompetent Sith Officer Clean Up Simulator. Still kinda miffed SWG got taken down for this.

I just wanted the feeling of a world, instead they turned it into fleet station the game with no open world PVP what so ever.

It isn't hard, you copied WoW with everything else, why don't you copy their amazing world design too? The world was the secret to WoW's success, it felt like a place, it was mostly seamless, had real time travel, the instances all took up world space and world PVP was possible everywhere!

The problem with MMOs today, all zoned, instanced and phased off, TESO suffers from this too.

@texasgoldrush Like life support is far from dead.

Every trash MMO anchors some die hard base content with mediocrity and pay to win.

@IanNottinghamX They already did that m8. It was called Star Wars Galaxies. SWG was an awesome game until they tried to "fix" it...

@Auriken The vocal minority of gamers just loves to hate. It doesn't really even matter too much what it is. If it isn't a game they love they will publicly ridicule it. As more of them see how popular it is to hate the game/console/developer/etc it will build upon itself. Until it eventually spirals out of control into a perpetual storm of pointless raging ignorance...

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@Auriken EA doesn't like to admit failure.  They will grind a game series into the ground before they admit their game sucks.

EA is the master of making games no one wants to play.  So content appearing is by no means an indicator that people care about it.

@Auriken Yup, happens to every game older than a month - especially MMO's.

For the record I'm one of the people that still plays TOR. Not regularly mind you, but I pop in every now and then to check it out. I still have complaints but it's nowhere near as bad a game as everyone here makes it out to be. I'll be back when this expansion finally drops.

@Thanatos2k  Believe me, Than, I have no idea. I get it different tastes and all, but dammit, not this long for it.

@gajbutler So true

Having the freedom to fly across the whole continents without a mass of loading screens and zones is something alot of mmos lack.

Auriken
Auriken

@Thanatos2k @AurikenThat makes zero sense. People accuse EA of being greedy constantly, and then turn around and say they'll keep pumping money into a game without a cash return?

Do you people even read what you say anymore? How can they EA be both greedy and not want to make a profit at the SAME TIME? I swear, you EA haters will go to any length to continue hating EA, even if you constantly contradict yourself. Which you often do.

donkey0007
donkey0007

@northArrow @Auriken  It's a fun game mind you. But they really shouldn't have set in the "KOTOR" Era, that is the biggest problem.

rofeta

@Thanatos2k Those few people must be super rich given that SWTOR made $139 million in 2013.  This suggests that the game is actually a financial success and given the scores from professional critics it scored well, so it is a critical success as well.

Not to say that it's the best MMO or that everything it has done was great or well done, but while you might not personally like the game (or that "normal gamers" don't, who are these people anyway?), again there is nothing wrong with that either, it's just your statement it is a failure does not seem to be supported by the figures floating around out there.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@Auriken @Thanatos2kThe money is to be extracted via invasive microtransactions from the few people stupid enough to keep playing and paying.

The normal gamers have long moved on from this failure MMO.

Also I fail to see exactly where I called EA greedy here?  It IS possible for EA to be greedy with one game while being incompetent managing another.
