Later this month, during the Tokyo Game Show in Japan, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix will hold a press conference to talk about its mysterious cloud gaming project, Flare, which was first announced in November 2013. Square Enix calls Flare a "technological breakthrough in cloud gaming."

The event itself will take place Friday, September 19, starting 10 AM local time, though there were no details about what we can expect to learn during the presentation.

Square Enix explained last year that Flare is not like PlayStation Now or OnLive. Those services offer streaming games, but Flare is more focused on the cloud. "[Flare] replaces the console with a supercomputer," Square Enix told GameSpot last year.

"Everything in current streaming games is running in its own individual instance," the company said at the time. Flare, instead, "creates one instance and shares those resources...supercomputer-like experiences are possible with Project Flare through a unique, patented, architecture that enables cost-efficient scalability and processing power through which images are streamed as video."

One publishing partner, Assassin's Creed and Far Cry company Ubisoft, has come aboard to support Flare, though it is the only one for now.

This year's Tokyo Game Show takes place September 18-21, and GameSpot will have editors on the ground bringing you news and coverage of the event.
