Spider-Man 2 Is Doing Much Better Than 2018 Original In First-Month US Sales
First-month sales for Spider-Man 2 are up by a double-digit percentage compared to the first game.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched at the end of October, and it put up big sales numbers. Circana, the company formerly known as NPD, has revealed that the game was the No. 1 best-selling game in the US for the month and it performed much better than the original back in 2018.
Spider-Man 2's launch-month sales were higher than the original game by a double-digit percentage, Circana said.
Spider-Man 2 achieved those double-digit percentage gains over the first game despite launching near the end of the month, on October 20. For comparison, 2018's Spider-Man launched on September 7, 2018. Also, Spider-Man 2 is available exclusively on PS5, while the 2018 game debuted on PS4, which had a much larger install base than the PS5 does now.
Additionally, Circana's Mat Piscatella pointed out that Spider-Man 2 costs $70 to start compared with $60 for the original Spider-Man, which helped the game's overall revenue.
Circana does not release specific sales numbers, but Sony itself announced that Spider-Man 2 has sold 2.5 million copies globally in its first 24 hours and 5 million copies after 11 days.
After just one month on the market, Spider-Man 2 is now the No. 4 best-selling game overall in the US for 2023, trailing Madden NFL 24, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Hogwarts Legacy.
For US sales, Spider-Man 2 beat out a number of other newcomers in October, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which ranked No. 2 for the month. Assassin's Creed: Mirage, meanwhile, was No. 3. You can see the full list of October 2023's top 20 best-selling games in the gallery below.
