A trademark popped up recently for something called "Alan Wake's Return," and not long after, we learned that a live-action trailer for Alan Wake's Return will run inside of Quantum Break. All of this happened before developer Remedy said anything about the project and what form it would take. Now we know--and unfortunately, it's not a game at all.

Sam Lake, a creative director at developer Remedy Entertainment, tells Kotaku UK that the Alan Wake's Return trademark pertains to an in-game video series for Quantum Break. Whereas TV screens featured in Remedy's Max Payne showcased still images, Quantum Break's will be "live-action mini-episodes"--and Lake will himself will star in them.

"A big part of the trademarking process all in all is the legalities of it," Lake said about Return. "Just making sure everything is covered. So, there's no real news about anything future Alan Wake-related."

Alan Wake fans may eventually get a new game, however. Lake has repeatedly said Remedy would like to return to Alan Wake in the future, a point he reiterated in his interview with Kotaku.

"We are exploring possibilities and concepting different things, but lots needs to click into place for anything to happen," he said. "We will be the first to talk about it when there is something definite to talk about."

Quantum Break launches for Xbox One and PC on April 5.
