Sony will discuss PS4 "release plans" at Gamescom

Publisher to disclose unspecified release information for next-generation platform at German event next week.

by

Sony's Gamescom 2013 presentation next week will disclose "release plans" for the PlayStation 4, the company announced today on its website.

In addition to sharing release details for the next-generation console, Sony's briefing will provide updates for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the company said.

Sony's PlayStation briefing at Gamescom will take place Tuesday, August 20, at 6 p.m. BST. GameSpot will be in attendance.

As Sony previously announced, the presentation will showcase "the future of all things PlayStation" and will be "packed with news."

Gamescom takes place August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany. Microsoft executive Phil Spencer will host the Gamescom keynote address on August 21, while Electronic Arts will hold its briefing on August 20 at 10 a.m. EDT.

Sony's press conference started out so bad I had to shut it off.

So how many people came on here this morning expecting to see Microsoft's press conference at Gamescom?

This was written on another website after searching for it:

"There will be no live-stream for the Xbox One at GamesCom. There will be no public press conference that gamers and press alike will be able to partake in to comment, praise or criticize Microsoft's every move regarding the Xbox One."

Are they that scared of what people will think, I thought the point of a press conference was to have the "press" there to take notes and share it with the world?

Microsoft, this is stupid, sort it out. Just proves even more that Sony are Number 1

Presumably this is where they stiff Europe with a 2014 launch date... they haven't managed a simultaneous worldwide console launch before, why start now?

It'll probably go like ;

-Sony : Now we'll be a gentlemen and give Microsoft the  first announcement rights so we can change them off-stage while they announce their plans.

Never buy a console in the first year of launch. Wait for bugs to be ironed out and better games.

@DeViLzzz PC gaming is lame. Why would I wanna play on a monitor when I can play on my couch, on my big HDTV and surround sound system? Frankly, PC gaming is lame. Controllers are far better. The only games better on PC are RTS and some Shooters, that's it. Nothing more. And since PC have almost no games compared to consoles, I don't even see the point in the investement... it cost way more to build a gaming PC compared to buying a console each 6-7 years.. Anyway after 6-7 years your PC is lame and you have to build another one, for what, another 1k$? Really lame. Also, you're argument doesn't make sense for Sony/M$ wanting to kill used games... PC already killed it on the platform, so PC would be bad now? You are not making any sense...

@ominous_prime If it does that is great cuz I will be getting mine on my birthday. At least I believe I will unless FS doesn't ship it to me the same day.

@Ian-Cognito They probably would pull it off if MS hadn't royally screwed up at their E3 press con and made PS4s preorders skyrocket to an impossible number to fulfill in time for a holiday release.

@Hal3x I just checked for PST and it was 11:00, so probably at 2:00 your time.

@monson21502 Xbox1 is already in my local pawn shop it's been marked down to free and still no one is interested in that pos system lol.

@monson21502 What the fuck are you talking about all I want to know is the release date. People will be sending there Xbox One's to the pawn shop when they get the RROD because I heard they won't be repairing for free anymore.

@arqe Microsoft won't be going to Gamescom they said it on there Xbox page.

@arqe Doesn't matter when MS goes. They will just change their console anyway.

@bubba_1988 Definitely the case with this launch lineup! I'll be awaiting the eventual redesign that comes with a larger SSD. I also won't get one until they define how they intend to use Gaikai. That requires always online DRM to use from what it was before Sony bought them out.

monson21502

@bubba_1988 yeah specially sony systems, i dont have a single working ps system that i bought within the first year... ps 1 the lid broke and wouldnt read discs, ps2  never could play a dvd all the way threw. 60 gig ps3 got YLOD in less then 2 years.... my ps3 slim is on its last leg i think. keeps freezing up and the fan turns on real loud after about a half hour of game play. if it does die i will not be buying a ps4 at all!!

@bubba_1988 if just bugs, those can be fixed with a update, the real problem would be hardware problems.

@Dannystaples14 They'll be including a PS Vita with the PS4 at a price point of $499.99. There will be some PS Vita games announced, but they want customers to be sold on using the PS Vita as a controller or for remote play. They want you to use it for what they planned the PSP to be for the PS3, but never quite nailed down. It's part of the reason that the PS camera was taken out of the package as this was their alternate pack in idea. Now customers will have to choose to get the PS4/PS Vita combo or get a XBOX One/Kinect combo.

@senjutsu If you buy the right video cards the life of a gaming pc lasts quite a long time and at the very least the quality still would be better than a console.

PC gaming is not lame for the reasons you state cuz guess what .....

1. games are cheaper sooner than on console .. numerous sales and that offsets the need for being able to sell pc games used

2. controllers can be used on pc too

3. since controllers can be used on pc too you can play games from your couch

PC > consoles

@DeViLzzz It's probably October 29th. They're going to try an make sure they launch ahead of the XBOX One by at least a week. If they do the worldwide launch, then it'll be December 3rd.

@kb8618 @Ian-Cognito Sony have already announced any orders taken from now until release won't be fulfilled on day one. So they can take as many as they want everyone who has ordered before last week is guaranteed day one. So they say.

Dannystaples14

@ominous_prime Well out of the two I can see me using my Vita/PS4 a hell of a lot more than Kinect, which is one of the reasons I will probably get a PS4, with price being another.

I just wish I could be confident the Vita will be able to support itself though in the next year or more.

I mean I doubt I will stream my PS4 to my Vita using Gaikai, but I will most definitely play some PS4 on my Vita locally at home. Laying around in the living room or in bed while playing some PS4 on handheld sounds pretty sweet to me, but then again playing some Vita games on the bus or when I am not at home sounds nice as well.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@PhoenixArisal There is always someone like that on ebay. And I have a couple of peripherals and a nice case for it. I'm sure there will be someone who buys it.

But if they bring out some games for it I won't have to sell it and I am currently working my way through the back catalogue of Final Fantasy games, there are several PS Classics I wouldn't mind owning again, PSP games and then there are the few decent PS Vita games out at the moment that look good.

Which means if by the time I am finished with all of those (hell Final Fantasy 1-10 should take me about a year if not more) there is still nothing out worth owning then I know it is best to sell, but a year or more is more than enough time for Playstation to get their acts together and I can have a chance to try the PS4 remote play out before I send it on it's way.

@gosushi @freedom01 The XBOX One can monitor it's heat and adjust internal temperatures to ensure overheating doesn't occur like on the XBOX 360. Sony did the same with their redesign of the PS1 as they were constantly breaking from over heating. It's also why it's smart to go with a power brick to have less internal heat.

Ein419
Ein419

@gosushi @freedom01 well not all systems have bugs. I used to wait a while, but now, I just buy the systems, I know that the PS4 price will be the same for a few years, so why wait. I use the system so much that if it dies in 3 years, I deserve a new system. Some consoles were fine from day one... Nintendo have done well..

gosushi
gosushi

@freedom01 But that's the joy of having a warranty on your console, It doesn't matter how many times you have to send your console back and I doubt MS is going to have to replace each X1 2000 times lol.

They'll probably ship you out the improved model before that happens anyhow, like they did with the 360 RROD issue.

freedom01
freedom01 moderator

But if its hardware it could happen again so warranty would be pointless if keeps on happening unless they give you a fill refund, so then you could wait out till they release a 2nd version console that fixes those problems

@ominous_prime @PhoenixArisal It is a shame because the Vita has a hell of a lot of potential. I mean I've played Need for Speed Most Wanted and Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 on Vita and several PSN games and all of them I have seen look stunning on the Vita's screen.

And the power of the thing is very awesome for a handheld.

We just need more games for it. I mean that was one of the failings of the PSP, it was a great handheld but it just became the platform where the lesser games went to die overall. Some awesome ones, Crysis Core, GTA games, but a lot of very terrible ones as well.

@Dannystaples14 @PhoenixArisal I sold my PS Vita because it looked like Sony wasn't supporting yet another device they created. I was an early adopter and looked at the schedule Sony put forth as far as games coming to the system and there was barely anything planned for a year. All the other titles were on the PS3, so there was no point in me keeping it. This is why I am waiting on getting a PS4. Sony has a habit of not supporting their own devices during that first year and depending on others to pick up the slack. PS4's game lineup is looking that way with the first year.
