Sony to release multiple versions of PS4 - Report

Multiple versions of PlayStation 4 hardware reportedly available at launch; pricing from $399 to $599.

Sony is predicted to ship multiple versions of its PlayStation 4 hardware when the console goes on sale this holiday season, according to an unnamed source, as reported by GamesIndustry International.

Full details are expected to be revealed at the company's E3 press conference being held later today, with a rumoured $399 starting price, and the highest-priced model selling for $599. While no specifics were given regarding potential technical differences between configurations, the unnamed insider tipped that Sony hopes to use the console and its 4K resolution support as a "stepping stone" to push glasses-free 3D viewing.

Earlier today Microsoft revealed its pricing for the Xbox One. The Xbox hardware will go on sale globally this November and will cost $499 in North America, €499/£429 in Europe, and $599 in Australia.

One minor improvement announced is the inclusion of the cross-game chat for PS4, a real bonus.
That was one thing I did like about Xbox Live, private chat in and out of games.

I just can't think of a valid reason why I should buy an Xbox One. I'm trying but nothing is working for me.

Having both consoles and both paid subs, xbox runs a lot smoother IMO and far less anime based games on xbox.

"...and $599 in Australia" Oh, so Australians also gets the Xbox One significantly more expensive than Americans, but not as expensive as in Europe and the UK. I'd heard it's because import taxes are high in Europe, but whatever the reason it still sucks in comparison. 499 euros = 661,5 US dollars and 429 GBP = 668 US dollars.

Depends on what the higher priced models bring.  I may need to change my pre-order.

Remember when Sony said that multiple SKU's would confuse the consumer?

be nice if one of those models were somehow backwards compatible

Of course Sony is going to push the 4K thing. Why? Their TVs are the first ones advertised at places like Best Buy and Fry's. Sony Movies have already announced they are remastering some of their more popular movies (like Spiderman) into 4K. They're bound to start making games in 4K.

Does anyone know if PS4 has the same policy as Microsoft..."a 24/7 online requirement"?

Xbox users have to $5 for SIMPLE online services meanwhile we PS users have to pay LESS than $5 for PS+ that is already a MUCH better service than Xbox Gold....we get amazing discounts and free price on semi-new games...

If you are only planning to buy the XOne.......I feel sorry for you..

I'd jump from 360 to PS4 if I had extra money. Its too late for me son. I already bought a sweet PC. The Emperor will show me the true nature of the dark side.

Sony played it safe at E3 - without delving into too many specifics. We will have to get the bottom line on what was presented in the coming months.

So how much is it going to cost in AUSTRALIAN dollars? Companies usually love to whack on an extra $100 compared to the US price just 'cause they can, so I'm wondering if it's going to continue with the PS4.

So I've been thinking about the online pay to play business model a bit, as much as I can at 5:30 in the morning (damn you, E3!) and I thought, wouldn't  it be nice if there was a light version of PS+ available? Like one that gives you online play, but only that and nothing else, and then at a slightly reduced price. Slightly...we don't want to slash it too much. What do you guys think about that? Not that it will ever be implemented, of course, but I try to be positive at all times... XD

I'm actually quite impressed, and I'm not much of a PS gamer. After what I was from MS, I believe I will be in the future.

You know, now that I've thought about it, I think they might have started charging for online play because of the price of the console. Pretty much no one expected it to be that low, so they are likely selling each unit at a loss. Between the cost of maintaining their own form of the Cloud and that, it makes sense.

@Hurvl ummm.. why wouldnt people just go to Ebay and buy one... and just change the region when setting up?  t

then it shouldnt matter where you live... buy it from the US. they have language settings on the consoles...

@Hurvl Its the about the same amount of working hours at minimum wage though.

@Chaos_Dante_456 That would be expensive as they'd basically have to have a cell in every system, and a dual boot for the different OS's. It would also diminish the value of whatever they charge for the Gakai service when it goes live.

Lawrencevanrijn

@Chaos_Dante_456 nope, technologically just not realistic. Keeping your old system is also more reliable. Even next year, if you buy both, you will end up with something more reliable then one system supporting both.

@TexasAnMGrad2K 4k screws up 2k / 1080p for the rest of us.  Watch a 1080p movie, upscaled or not, on a 4k screen and it looks muddy and bad.  Watch 4k on a 1080p screen and it looks HORRIBLE.  If 4k takes over as the default broadcast system, all 1080p screens are then useless.

Why's it matter?  You have perfect pixel density on a 1080p 42 inch when sitting 12 feet away, worse when closer or further the more you go.  You have perfect pixel density on a 4k 42 inch at 48 feet away.  FORTY EIGHT.  Trust me, the only use for a 4k screen, legitimately, is for replacing projection screens in large rooms.  It was first invented for actual movie theatres.  Sony, Samsung, and the like just need to drive sales and 4k is their new 'must have' hype tool.  They don't care if you have worse picture quality in the end if they have your money.

Save the image quality of the world.  Don't support 4k resolution, AKA UltraHD.  Well, unless glasses-free interlaced prism screens come out, in which case DO support 4k but only in that case (as it's only double the horizontal pixels and only used per eye, so effectively still 1080 resolution).

@Navardo95 while I like the PS+ free games nothing is ever a "blockbuster game" that I would ever purchase anyways really, except maybe Little Big Planet 2. Also Xbox Live sounds like they will start releasing 2 free games each month as well so we shall see where that goes.

In the end its not the service as much as how the connection is utilized. I really like how I can connect to my friends on the Xbox alot more than PS on the current gen. Also I am interested to see what Xbox does with its non-gaming side of the house with Xbox live to see if they add in bonuses?

Vodoo

@Navardo95 PS+ does not offer semi new games. What have you been smoking? Is Infamous 2 semi new? And they offer the same games for 6 months at a time, only occasionally changing a ps-one game or ps-vita game. I have both systems and XBL is leagues ahead of ps+. The only benefit was ps+ gave access to free games, and that's over with because now Xbox does it.

TirOrah

@jts1891 I've been told that every console sells at a loss. Maybe it's the Gaikai thing that tipped the scales? I don't know. I do agree that the price is pretty low, especially compared to the PS3's launch, although the prices for different regions don't match up.

@chiefpositive @tommynj Only thing that I saw from Microsoft that might make me get a Xbox One was TitanFall. That looked really good.

@TheExxorcist @Hurvl Delivery cost would be extortionate and there's still a chance of being forced to pay import tax. Best option is to grab one if you or a friend happen to be in the US at the time and bring it on the plane (not in original box, to avoid paying tax).

@Lawrencevanrijn i know about the hardware limitations, it's just wishful thinking.

@carbonFibreOpti @TexasAnMGrad2K huh I was going to say this...

Edit; If you have a mansion still don't support this as it will be cheaper to get a projector and you can afford to just install a non textured non reflective white wall.

@sethschroeder07 @Navardo95 Xbox live are for free 360 games and it only lasts until the launch of the XB1. They stated this plain as day in their E3 conference.

@Vodoo Infamous 2 and Little big planet 2 were 'semi new' when they were first added to PS+

Chaos_Dante_456
Chaos_Dante_456

@Vodoo well infamous2 is a constant but they offer a free game every month over the past 3 or 4 months we got Spec Ops The Line, Demon's Souls, Sleeping Dogs, and Deus Ex Human Revolution. As long as u download the games while they're free even after they are no longer listed u can continue using them until ur subscription expires. It's a great deal.

on top of that u get discounts on other games and dlc form time to time, and sometimes discounts on top of the stuff on sale.

jts1891
jts1891

@TirOrah @jts1891 That's true. Also, from what I know, the reason for the regional differences is because of trade laws, taxation, etc.
