Sony shuts down Resistance series online features for good April 8

Play Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3 online one last time.

If you enjoy the online features of Insomniac Games’ Resistance series on the PlayStation 3 you should use the next couple of days to play them one last time.

As it announced late last year, Sony is ending support for online features in Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3 on April 8. That means you will no longer be able to play the games’ multiplayer or cooperative modes.

Insomniac Games suggested on Twitter that fans hop on and relive memories with some of Insomniac’s employees, who will supposedly be playing as well.

“There are a large variety of reasons why they have to shut down,” Insomniac said in response to a fan who asked why it was ending support of online features. “Sony makes that call though, not us. They maintain online.”

Insomniac said it didn’t know if Sony would be ending online support for Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita, but it doesn’t appear that way according to Sony’s online support pages.

Last year, the developer said it seriously considered making a fourth Resistance game, but was wary of franchise fatigue. It is currently working on the Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive.

resistance 1 & 3 were some of the best shooters or one of the best games i played on the ps3. the second game was pretty bad. i really want sony to bring back resistance to the ps4 because they shouldn't only rely on killzone to be their main shooter.

I have all 3 resistance games. Only played MP in the third game. Didn't like it much. So I'm not really mad if they are shutting down. I still like to play Killzone 2 and 3 MP though. That's some good fun:D

There was game fatigue after the first game. The whole series was generic trash, just like Killzone. It's as if Sony isn't capable of making a decent shooter. Good Riddance!

Oh and the PS3 era wasn't so kind to Sony as they spend a billion dollars salvaging the PS3 in order to keep it afloat.I know how you Sony fanboys love to ignorant facts. And it's ironic how Sony fanboys defend Sony's financial crisis by saying: "Well, Sony is a multimedia company while Nintendo focuses on gaming." Even when it comes to gaming Sony is fucked.

And how many developers did Sony lose again?

chev9341

When Nintendo shut down the severs for the Wii and DS, Sony fanboys jumped on that to troll the company as if Sony would never do that (which Sony has done before Nintendo's announcement). Making it seem like Nintendo is evil. Now, yet AGAIN, Sony fanboys proved their hypocrisy by being okay with this.

Nobody better not tell me that you never saw Sony fanboys making fun of M$ fanboys for having to pay for online play. Sony fanboys are the biggest, ignorant,  hypocrites out there.

This is why player/clan run dedicated servers are the way to go!

The all digital future that some are clamoring for is going to be so awesome.

If people would have actually bought the third game, then maybe the servers would not be shutting down.  Most people stopped caring about the series after the second one came out.  People voted with their dollars, and this is what they got in return.

This is why it's best to not buy multiplayer-only games. All server die. All your favorite MP-only titles will someday be unplayable..

hystavito

@virtualskill  Yeah and you know, even if the business case for shutting it down are totally reasonable and there's very few people playing, it's still something lost to the community and the culture.

You have those communities that still play very old games, they keep it alive, and even if I don't personally play the game, I think it's sad that others won't be able to.  Little bits of history fading away.  This will be of course much if we get to the point of fully streamed games.  Then when they shut it down, that little piece of history, culture, art, will be lost forever or at least locked away where the general public will never get to experience it.

another downside to console gaming, even if you guys pay for online, the servers still go down LOL

I really enjoyed Resistance 3 multiplayer and in fact enjoyed Resistance 2's multiplayer more than the campaign.

Why are they shutting all 3 games downs? I can understand RESISTANCE I and II but III? I guess kids really don't play PS3 games online much...

Doesn't concern me directly, but isn't Resistance 3 just 2,5 years old??

I do wonder which company will take over Sony electronics. As they are very close to collapsing.
Would it be ironic if the Microsoft game division places a bid?

To be fair though, Nintendo is in deeper shit than sony is at the moment, so perhaps with a new ceo things can still be fixed.

@nazgoroth  Nintendo is nowhere near as bad as Sony in terms of finances.

chev9341

@nazgoroth Where's your proof that Nintendo is in deeper shit? Is it the troll posts that trolls posted on the internet? If you quote anything from Eddie Makuch's work, you will be laughed at.

The PS3 era wasn't so kind to Sony.

That's bad. I liked Resistance 3, didn't spend too much time online with it planning to do so a bit later... and now I read that I've got 2 days left :/ I actually didn't know that they planned this. I also just found out the Gran Turismo 5 online server will shut down. That's another game I was planning to spend some time online in :(

Now, sure both these games have great single-player modes, but still - this shows us a "preview" of what to expect from "PlayStation Now", their cloud gaming service. You will see games come and go.

Also, I guess I won't get all Resistance 3 trophies anymore :/ Oh well...

Allo! This doesn't surprise anyone I'm sure. Because NOTHING lasts forever anyhow. Audio/Video connections come and go. Recordable formats come and go. Remember the first zip drive storage disks? 100mb! WOO!  Software compatibilities come and go. It's something that people have to come to grips with. iTunes will not be around forever, nor will Facebook and god save us: STEAM will come and go. Even photographs fade and degrade with age. Nothing is permanent folks. You simply enjoy what's here and now and invest just enough of your money/time into things that give you pleasure. Otherwise this is all /Hey you damn kids! Git oofah mey lawwwwn!/ But that's not a bad thing I guess. Nostalgia and all that. When you buy Tit'n'Full or HallO you're basically gambling (easy money) that the servers to play the game will be around 3-5 years. There's no obligation anywhere that you're guaranteed this. The popularity and emerging tech will help or hinder this.

Not "very active" but active enough that MS couldn't just shut down the servers since people are still playing it. I just played it 3-4 months ago online myself, and had immense amount of fun. Once and if this game gets on Steam, the playerbase is gonna rocket to sky high.

pez2k_

@quakke @Pupchu@catholic_gamer...until Games For Windows Live is shut down in a few months' time. Halo CE on PC is also being closed down when Gamespot turn their servers off in a couple of months.

@pez2k_ @Sharp-Shooter89@quakke@Pupchu@catholic_gamer

You know that it is being discussed right now about where to move the servers? That is why they had to postpone their shutdown operation all the way to 2014 summer.

GFWL is not something that is absolutely required for Halo 2 to work. One simple patch and BOOM, no more GFWL required. Many people have requested Halo 2 to be moved to Steam since that would be the best choice for the game and people. I really hope it goes to Steam.

So when was the last time you heard Microsoft shut game servers down?

(Yeah, good luck scouring the Internet...)

dlCHIEF58

@pez2k_ @TashunkoSapa

To upgrade the net protocols so Live could be improved and not be limited by the old net code originally used in Live. Only one 360 game made by Microsoft has ever had all its functions shit down - 1 vs 100, which was free to begin with for Live subscribers.

Richmaester6907
Richmaester6907

@Pupchu @dlCHIEF58 @pez2k_ @TashunkoSapa  Halo 2 had almost no community by that point and they only did it because it was the original xbox. Sony on the other hand is shutting down 3 still playable current gen games which is fucking disgusting.

pez2k_
pez2k_

@Richmaester6907 @Pupchu@dlCHIEF58@pez2k_@TashunkoSapaIf you want to be accurate, the last original Xbox game was almost a year younger than Resistance 3 is now when MS turned off XBL for it. The Resistance games are also previous-gen titles just like original Xbox games were in 2010. Neither company is innocent here, it's a problem endemic to online console games.

pez2k_
pez2k_

@TashunkoSapa They shut down every single game for the original Xbox in early 2010.

Yet people still play CS (1999) and even Quake (1996) online. Gotta love the big money hungry devs of today. No dedicated player hosted servers, no good games, no nothing..

seanwil545
seanwil545

This is exactly the problem with online only gaming. I'm not picking on Titanfall, but what happens to that game when the servers are mothballed?

I also hate the fact that console Match Browsers have made their way into PC games. I can't remember that last PC game I played where I could host my own server.

Even P2P works just fine if have you Broadband and you're only playing with couple friends.

nightsinner beat me to the Tinfall shortcoming =p

Alucard_Prime
Alucard_Prime

@seanwil545 Not worried about that, because by that time I'm sure I will have moved on to one of its sequels, if I still want my TF fix. They usually shut down the servers near the end of the game's popularity. I know it sucks for the late adopters but this kind of thing never affected me because I like to play these online games the first few years they are out and then I move on. If there are only a few thousand people left playing, I can understand them not being able to justify leaving them on. If they shut them off while the game is still popular then that's a different story.

Divisionbell
Divisionbell

Exactly. Usually people have already moved on to something new. I'm surprised resistance is still so popular judging by the comments here.

nightsinner
nightsinner

What the hell are people going to do if they ever turn off the Titanfall severs? At least the Resistance series has single player campaigns.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@nightsinner

For one, that is not a Microsoft developed or published game. But since it is wholly hosted on Microsoft servers, there really isn't any chance of that happening any time soon. You can't name any game (besides 1 vs 100) on the 350 using Microsoft servers that has been shut down. How's MAG working for you?
