Sony reports 7 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold worldwide

Sony states that their next-gen console has recently passed the 7 million unit milestone.

Sony announced today that global sales of the the PlayStation 4 have exceeded 7 million units as of April 6, 2014.

Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment wrote in a press release: "The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice. The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months."

The press release also stated that global software sales for PS4 have passed 20.5 million copies for digital and physical media.

NPD numbers are expected to arrive later this week, which will give us a better picture of how these numbers stack up against the competition, but it's great news for Sony (and for gamers) that their console continues to push huge numbers.

Got my PS4 last Monday and its fantastic, makes last gen feel old now, got MGSGZ and Thief, oh and Thief is a great game so far, takes me back to my good old PC days playing 1 to 3, I certainly don't think it deserves the low scores it scooped up.

Never tell Xboners that Ps3 are selling more, theyll begin trolling with things like: My console and control are bigger and size matters and so. Duh.

Possibility it might reach 10 million by the end of the year

Some other interesting facts for Xbox fans that should be noted.

*April's second week in North America has Xbox One outselling the PS4 by over 2k units.

*Retail Titanfall is still selling strong in North America. 360 - 253k, XB1 - 81k.

*note, The Titanfall X1 bundle does not include these figures as that's a digital code.

*Infamous in North America had fallen to 32k with a Kinect title more than doubling it's sales.

*Xbox brands have 6 titles in the top ten whereas Sony has 3. Nintendo has none.

Great job North America!!!

I think this time around the rolls are reversed, Sony learned from their mistakes and a little bit of humbleness doesn't hurt anybody. MS got too confident and arrogant unfortunately under the misguidance of Don Mattrick, not realizing that in this industry all companies are like leaves on a tree and if their not careful, they will end up falling to the ground. Luckily with Phil Spencer now at the helm who seems like an intelligent guy, they can turn it around and fix the damage that Mattrick has caused. And remember a little bit of humbleness doesn't hurt anyone. One of the first things MS needs to do, is to lower the price of the console which is one of the reasons they are hurting the most. Also one must take in consideration that PS4 is selling on 42 markets around the world, and Xbone only on 13.

I see absolutely zero reason to buy a PS4 or an X1 right now. PC is all I need and then some

Ps4 has been consistently building up deals since its launch and it doesn't give off an impression of being easing off whenever soon. The interest has, actually, been much higher than the organization's desires. Sony suggested that it is confronting trouble in satisfying see more data here http://goo.gl/J9Cfuz

Ease up, guys. The Xbox One has sold almost as many. Microsoft boasts over 5 million units... wait, oh that's shipped. Same difference, right?

So the PS4 sold 7 million and the Xbox one sold 6 million.  Before people were arguing which system was better or worse many were claiming that the console market was doomed.  Obviously these sales figures prove these people were wrong.  I don't care what system you like better the success of both systems is good for the industry.  Having only one system would stifle innovation so rather than saying one system is horrible look the differences each system brings to the market.  Not every new thing is going to work however that doesn't mean that it may not improve the overall gaming experience in the future.

I'm starting to not buy this 'struggling to meet demand' line. I know they're reaching out to more markets, but you'd have thought they'd have stepped up production by now.

Why do they even announce these numbers? It means almost nothing to the average gamer and we all know we're going to spend days arguing what they mean.

I'm really happy for them, they learned from their past mistakes and they deserved it.

I bought one at launch, haven't even turned it on in the last month.  My PS3 is still used every day.  This 7 million mark is a good sign. Now that there are 7 million, its time to start making some games!

remember when people thought Sony would be outsold from the start back at launch? when that 1 week head start would be erased and Sony would be relegated to passengers seat status in this generation?

man.......what on earth were those guys thinking?

I've recently built a good PC, but still want to get a PS4. PC is better for open world games and modding, but I like consoles for exclusives and ease of using :) Still wanna play inFamous Second son :o I think i am holding myself from buying it for nothing XD prices won't go down in a long time anyway.

@hotwog21  And on my XBox One I use all those features...and LOVE THEM!!! I understand that you are a "gamer" and your gaming console can't dare do anything but play games. But for now I will continue to enjoy, skype-ing my daughter who is in college....while I own her in a few games....and watching NFL while streaming player stats on Sundays ... BUT I know...I know...I am speaking of something other than games on a gaming site...and I am spoiling your joke...I'm sorry...i will stop now.  :)

@Sevenizz I wonder why Microsoft doesn't launch its consoles with awesome exclusive games in the first place. (At launch). Even 3-4 exclusive titles like Titanfall and Halo can really boost sales. A lot of buyers go in for the sales figures before buying the PS4 or the Xone. Its really difficult to catchup once you have the lead.

Optimist_Pryme
Optimist_Pryme

@Sevenizz  ROFL, this one bit... reminds me of when Mattrick or whatever his name was, the dude that went to Zynga was all, "don't like it, we have the perfect thing for you, it's called the 360"... "*Retail Titanfall is still selling strong in North America. 360 - 253k, XB1 - 81k."  Really!?  Over 3 times as many copies sold on 360 than Xbox One!?  LMBO. *facepalm* >_<

@arronsammy  nice sharing. Actually Sony's Ps4 beat Microsoft's Xbox One for the third successive month, on the other hand, Microsoft's select first individual shooter diversion, Titanfall topped the product deals graphs.

@meedokicky  I like consoles because there's no upkeep, no maintenance, no drivers nonsense, easy controller, pick up and play etc.

PCs do have sharper graphics but unless you keep upgrading every year or two, you'll have to keep lowering res and bells and whistles plus you're also at mercy of developers who may code for lowest console spec meaning PCs won't be stellar compared to console and that means it is worthless upgrading constantly.

I game on PCs (incl gaming laptop) and consoles and I will def pick up the PS4 this year end or next mid year. Consoles tend to last you a decade at least without any need to worry about the HW

xantufrog

@nighterrorx I'm glad you find those features useful - I don't watch football, don't have cable, and just don't have an interest in Kinect. But I can't understand why nobody else is allowed to value those things - consoles haven't REALLY been JUST about gaming for a while now. I started multitasking with the PS2 - why have a DVD player when your console does both?

kingjugganott
kingjugganott

@nighterrorx  I feel the same way. I enjoy the games on Xbox One and all of the features as well, such as watching TV or snapping different apps etc. I wonder what it would be like if all owners of cell phones would call it crazy that a phone had more features than just "Making Calls". It is what it is.

You aren't very bright, are you. The X1 version has been out longer than a month and the 360 version is a new release. Of course the latter would sell more. The fact that Titanfall X1 has sold almost 3 times more than Infamous at retail is astounding.

*facepam*, indeed.

@flyincloud1116 that's horse 5hit lol  that's sounds inflated to me. I mean I have a PS4, but 7 million? already? when it was 3 mil no less than a month ago?

orbit991
orbit991

@fanirama @meedokickyMan what are you talking about? Why would you upgrade every year or two? At worse I upgraded every 4 years and that's just the video card that took less then 5 minutes to drop into the case, and drivers? what, 2 minutes to click download and install every few months? Sharper graphics? You mean higher resolution/poly count and improved lighting, bigger areas and more characters on screen rendered, that's a bit more then just "sharper graphics", never mind the rather mind blowing modding extras for some games. You make it sound so difficult when it's not, like that you have to lift your legs to walk or something.

Having said this I also have a console on the side, mostly for sport games and an exclusive here and there, last one was the xbox this time it's PS4 since no two ways about it it's a better piece of gaming hardware, unless kinect is a big selling point to someone.

digishah
digishah

I just got a PS3 recently, and everything you mention about ease of use is total horsecrap, loading time is a nightmare, when I pop in a game it takes ages to update the driver even with good internet speed. If it wasn't for the exclusive I dont even know why I bothered buying a console =.=

meedokicky
meedokicky

@fanirama @meedokickyyeah I've been gaming on consoles the whole time :P but since I needed a good PC for work, I said might as well use it for gaming too.

and yeah i agree, that is what I said I like consoles for ease of use. except when it comes to Bethesda games XD

KiraDEATHNOTE
KiraDEATHNOTE

@digishah I disagree what he said it's not horsecrap. It's more of a pain on the PC side.

meedokicky
meedokicky

@digishah by ease of use I mean it is simple, buy console, buy a game, insert disc and start game. as for loading times, it depends on the game. some take too long like Mass effect games, but others like infamous 1 and 2 have very short loading times considering the open world.

so, unlike PC, where you have to research and look for good deals do build a PC. Then when it comes to games you have to tweak options to suit with your specs and some games don't work well with your graphic card... etc.

keep in mind you have bough an 8 years old device, so it is bound to be a bit slow by today's standards.
