Sony refunds Final Fantasy XIV customers as servers remain unstable

Game director Naoki Yoshida explains FFXIV's server problems, as Sony refunds customers who purchased the game through PSN.

The bungled relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn has seen Sony fully refund customers who purchased the PlayStation Network version of the game on August 27 or August 28.

Affected customers will see a full refund to their wallet, the entitlements for the game reset, and the game reappearing in their download list. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience," says Sony.

The servers for Final Fantasy XIV have been overloaded since the game's relaunch a week ago, leading Square Enix to suspend digital sales in an attempt to balance the heavy load.

Square Enix has repeatedly apologised to users finding it impossible to play the massively multiplayer online game, and game director Naoki Yoshida has taken to the company's forums to explain that he expected far fewer players after FFXIV's first iteration flopped.

"The night following the announcement of our plans to temporarily limit sales of the download version," said Yoshida. "A Realm Reborn recorded upwards of 218,000 concurrent connections. This is in spite of the fact that the peak login times for separate regions around the world arrive at differing intervals. We estimate that without time zone differences, the total number of concurrent connections would number anywhere from 300,000 to 350,000."

"As many of you know, this is the second launch for Final Fantasy XIV--something unprecedented in the MMORPG market. Considering the outcome of our first launch, our sales estimates for this one were decidedly conservative, as we believed that there would be a more gradual rise in users over the opening weeks and months."

"Instead, to our pleasant surprise, we experienced tremendous support from a great number of players who were eager to get into the game from day one. To ensure that these players, once logged in, were able to play in a stable environment, we were required to implement login restrictions which kept server population near maximum capacity without exceeding those numbers."

"The fact that we had to implement these restrictions is a direct result of my inaccurate sales and login estimates, and as producer, I must accept complete responsibility for this misstep. Each and every player who has been affected has my deepest apologies."

Yoshida added that each World server in FFXIV can handle a maximum of 5,000 concurrent connections, and that a higher number of players leads to server crashes and errors. Square Enix has chosen to limit logins to give the servers room to breathe, and Yoshida says that the team is monitoring the Worlds "24 hours a day" in an attempt to strike the right balance.

Logins are more likely to be restricted between 21:00 and 00:00, Yoshida added, which is the peak login time for the game.

Earlier this week Square Enix offered an additional seven days of free play time as compensation for customers affected by the outages.

What about those of us who bought it on CD!? The problems he's describing started at the end of August-it's now fucking October and i still haven't played the game- I'm not even aloud to return it, as there is an one-use code involved in the sign-up process! Madness!!!

Finally someone who actually makes a heartfelt apology for a company's screw-up instead of some spouting some nonsense pr bullshit. Great owning up. Now try to smooth it all out, ok ?

I thought this was fixed and was planning on buying it and playing today all day long while this horrible hangover from last night lasts, sadly when I got to the square enix store I got the "you can't buy it right now" message.

Now it's just me and my hangover.

They should consider how they sell their online games. The high numbers have more people that are going to quit, than constant players, the way they should keep it clean is to sell the game online with a quote. Then when every quittable player is gone, begin to sell again.

loving the game.. i live just outside of Toronto, and i only had serious issues the first 3 days, after that other than log in quenes!! I haven't had anything that bad!! but hell, i love the game... graphics amazing and without comparing to certain space mmos, this game is by far the deepest, so server issues aside anyone that cant wait on the the issues to be solved are missing out... ,,

Why are they capping server queues instead of adding more servers to handle the extra load?

Attention MMO developers:  I do not purchase games that I can only play some of the time.

I'm surprised Sony is offering refunds but the developer, Square Enix, isn't (to my knowledge. . .) though, I'm really enjoying the game XD

Sony seen problems and said "yo eff that, we need to clean our hands of this turd swirl. . ." lol

Once again I will say that everyone who purchased Early Access needs a refund. If you complain about not being able to play, they send you a form letter stating they can't reply to you and are closing your ticket.

Still a better launch than Diablo 3....and that wasn't even an MMO.

Server issues aside, I have yet to encounter a single bug with this game. I've had some graphical glitches that needed me to restart the game but I mean game breaking bugs like quests that don't work and all that.

I think they did well there, at least most of the server issues are sorted now.

Big surprise, Sony terrible at security, servers and software, It's what they are known for. The reason no one should be surprised is because it's not what they are good at they are primarily a hardware company and usually knock that out of the park. Just like MS f*cks up marketing and sometimes hardware but is good at UI and software. You pay your money you take your choice, the end.

If this was running on Microsoft servers it would be smooth sailing. Just sayin...

stop being butthurt that the Game you paid for isn't perfect.

They may have fixed some bugs NOW.....but they didn't a few days ago when this story was posted.

Deal with it.

@csx105 Well I called for a refund first day. A lot of babies on here might not care about receiving defected products, but I work for my money. And I certainly did not see a sign saying "YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY THIS PRODUCT WHEN YOU PURCHASE IT" when I was buying it from PSN. It is only fair that we are refunded. I paid money, and in return is expected you get a functioning product. FFXIV launch was far from that, and unfortunately is not my problem. But it is my money.

Its a shame that they wouldn't be using Microsoft servers because...ya know....Square-Enix has their own Online service and servers set up linked to PC/PS3/360

@jcknapier711 With such amazing reasoning and cognitive functioning...you won't be able to play this game anyway.

Zee_Blade

@arqe EVE would be your closest, it's a Sandbox MMO, there's some missions and stuff you can do it, but most of the actual 'content' is player intereaction. If space isn't your think, keep an eye out for Pathfiinder Online in 2014, that should be along the same lines.

OmegaGear
OmegaGear

@arqe What exactly would make the open world proper? It functions just like any other mmo, although it is still separated into zones, instead of one giant world, ala WoW. The linearity comes in the form of the main storyline, but you're more than free to ignore that, and just go exploring and grind the old fashioned way. It's what you'll have to do after you level your first class through the story anyways.

@Ayebang awww we got a sony sucka trying to bring xbox into this. im sry xbox never had a internet probelm in a very long time and they did for a weekend they gave everyone 1month sry try again

MrMilkmann
MrMilkmann

@Ayebang My guess would be because Final Fantasy is a Japanese game, and most Japanese gamers have a PS3, since Sony is Japanese. Therefore, the PS servers are under high load, since they have the most people playing there, where as not many people play Final Fantasy on XBox.

DigitalBushido
DigitalBushido

@Ayebang Not really. Doesn't. Being honest. I have very rarely has Xbox had online problems. There was only in my 6-7 life span year of Xbox one incident where I think was, like Sony and Xbox got hacked or something? And Xbox live was down for a week or so. Only time I remember. Otherwise it is pretty flawless.

jZangetsu21
jZangetsu21

@frylock1987 @jZangetsu21 Why facepalm? There is a difference between a BUG and a graphical glitch, it was my gfx card getting too hot.

Go facepalm yourself.

@vscott453 @jcknapier711

Allow me to introduce you to private servers, as long as they are not making any kind of money off of the game, they are allowed to run their own servers and allow anyone to play it.

Hence why Im playing on a Private WoW Server that is BC Era and not the bullshit those other retards are paying for.

arqe

@yamisniper @OmegaGear By open world , i mean there is no running around while questing.

You are just making Objectives like a single player game and move on to the next objective. It doesnt feel like quests.

cassie998
cassie998

You are all idiots. All the Final Fantasy 14 servers are accessible from all platforms. Its neither Sony or Xbox problems with connection, its a matter of trying to log in to a Server. All my friends are split between three servers; one night half of us can get on with no issues while the others struggle for an hour or more just to connect to the main lobby server. And its not Sony refunding players, its Square refunding players. And for the record, Xbox 360 sucks, I've gone through 3 and they all died with minimal play abuse. I babied them to; cool environment, shutdown properly, ect.. but they all died anyways.

MrMilkmann
MrMilkmann

@Ayebang Right, but neither Sony nor MS use their own servers for games. They use their servers for Playstation Network and XBox Live. So don't blame Sony or MS for the developer's screw up with servers.

Ayebang

One thing you should know is Halo is the most successful in North America, got more players than Fantacy and it does not cause any xb live, sir

Ayebang
Ayebang

As I remember, xb live never down for a while, not like Sony. If you think Sony online game is on par with xb live, it is bias and anti Microsoft, sir.

jZangetsu21

@frylock1987 No need to attack me, I found the problem. It wasn't temperature. My drivers were a few months old, never updated and I got flickering in cutscenes. It's fine after I updates.

As for my stuff being old. I'm running a 6 core i7 and a GTX Titan so....yeah, old I guess. I probably should have phrased my initial comment better so I understand the confusion. English is not my 1st language, so please don't attack me when I just phrased something wrong. And when I said bugs, I meant your usual MMO bugs such as quests and stuff not working. In the end, my drivers were giving me hassle and I was using an overclocking app and D3D Override with forced Vsync. Disabled that and it didn't help, so it was the drivers. My OC app didn't like my old ones.

frylock1987
frylock1987

@jZangetsu21 @frylock1987

graphical glitches make you restart the game? sounds more like a game breaking bug to me that makes you restart.....

and i call BS on your GFX Card getting too hot as well, if that was the cas, your game wouldn't even run properly because your shit sounds old and out dated.

IncisionX
IncisionX

@arqe What the hell are you on about?

Every game has objectives, it's called "Structure".. it helps to drive the player from point A to B. What you do between then is your choice entirely.

If you just mindlessly spam Quests then yeah, you'll likely get bored as with any Mmo.

jZangetsu21
jZangetsu21

@arqe @yamisniper @OmegaGear Um...you mean like WoW? And almost every other MMO? This game has dungeons, guild missions, raids are going to be added etc. In WoW, you also just run from NPC to NPC, kill stuff, collect stuff and go back to the NPC. I see no difference, except that in FF14 it's actually fun.
