Square Enix offers compensation for Final Fantasy XIV server woes

Servers excessively strained as relaunched MMO fails to predict how many people would be interested in the game.

Square Enix has offered players of relaunched MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn an additional seven days of free play time to compensate for the problems caused by the game's excessively strained servers.

The revamped MMO has been rendered unplayable for many players since its launch last week, as Square Enix misjudged how many people would be interested in playing the game.

Players yet to redeem their trial will be eligible for the additional seven days if they register before September 9, Square Enix adds.

The beleaguered servers will be taken offline from 17:00 PDT on September 3 to 03:00 PDT on September 4 for Square Enix to perform maintenance. The company says the work will increase the amount of available Words, increase the amount of logins available on each server, and reduce stress on its Duty Finder servers.

"Because login and character creation restrictions have hindered our ability to provide quality service, all Final Fantasy 14 service accounts will receive an additional seven days of free play time," Square Enix said.

"Furthermore, users who have yet to enter their registration codes will receive an additional seven-day trial should they register before 11.59 pm (PDT) on September 9, 2013. Moving forward, we will continue monitoring the servers to ensure that quality service and support are provided in a timely manner."

Square is such a great company. It took Blizzard years to finally give us a day or two. I can see this game being updated constantly. I support Square and for the great work and respect they show to us gamers.

The maintenance that they did worked perfectly, and helped overall.  I haven't had problems logging in recently, and the game is great.  Stupid haters...

Well Square Enix you've fucked up again did you!? How disapointing, I always knew you'd do this again. Now you must realize the errors of making a bad game.

Oh great Gamespots filter system once again flagged my name and removed my comment from yesterday... apparently Gamespots filter was set up by the church and god forbid you have 'unholy' in your name...

Stupid Gamespot

Good move by Squeenix though this is how you handle a mistake. You admit guilt and try to compensate those affected by it... not the classic blame your fanbase then try and sweep the error under the rug.

Played this ever since alpha ... trough all betas and now since pre launch yes it got log in problems but we are gamers we sorted that with spamming on login screen with controllers and etc.

After you do get into game its awesome its great its a little BIT SLOW but for people who understand FF games and played FFXI its fast enough plus dungeons , ferals , raids and etc etc are fun to do and if anything the game got an great revamp since v1 ... so ye totally worth the time now!

Thank god they gave me my money back. For real. I know MMO launches are never perfect....but almost 10 straight days of this shit?

Other MMOs had their shit together by the middle/end of the week.

Hell, look at how Guild Wars 2 handled their launch! They did it the right way. They knew exactly what to expect and how to handle it fi they had more then they were expecting.

Theres companies that know what they are doing because MMOs are their bread and butter....then there is Square Enix.

For the past several days, and still currently, SE has halted all digital sales of this game.  So if you're looking to play on PC, looks like it's going to be a while.  Unless they resume sales later today after the maintenance last night.  Regardless of the complexity and work involved with launching an MMO... if you screw up to the point where you have to halt sales of your product... That is about the worst outcome you could have from a business perspective.  Forgot about not being able to log in, you can't even buy the thing right now.  Launch problems are one thing, there is no excuse for a screw up of this magnitude.

With all the positive reviews even in the face of the launch hiccups, I'm really considering trying this game (after I'd given up hope on MMO's).

Server issues are almost expected on release of a hot title. I can't see myself paying a subscription fee though. Help me out here guys, is the game worth paying monthly for? I'm a casual gamer who only really plays on weekends and when the wife is asleep and not bugging me.

I bought the v1, it was quite terrible and light on content. I really enjoyed FFXI on PS2. Can't wait to try FFIXV anew.

I played the beta for a bit. Thought not sure what to do when I hit the cap. Don't see any PvP or Siege aspects that bring in the whole guild-conflict scheme.

i can see this game dead in a few months.. dont know how long the max Lv being 50 will last especially for a main character. Once my pally is Lv 50 il probably be done cause what els is there to do, my main goal in a MMO is to get to max level and find awesome gear.

p.s do a free server transfer PLEASE

It's nice to see this game enjoying some success.  I was in the Beta for the Original Launch, and it was such an utterly crap game that it completely fell off my radar.  Even after the announcement of a revamp I didn't want anything really to do with it.  Then about a year ago I heard out of nowhere that the revamp was doing well.  I signed up for Beta out of curiosity and got the invite.

I can tell you first hand that it's much improved; and It's largely because they actually listened to feedback this time around.  If it weren't for my current lack of income, I'd totally be on board and trying to play this right now.  Well done Squenix.

Now you just need to get the Single Player Games back into line.

I was mad about the server issues, but tbh the game is so good, i dont care, i JUST NEED TO PLAY!!!!!!!!

I'm actually kind of shocked at the bulk of these comments being so positive, or at the very least annoyed but understanding.  Especially for a game that was an absolute disaster just a few years ago.

We need more tempered criticism like this from the community.

people still care about this game?  i'm surprised too...and not shocked they under estimated player numbers.

I got Final Fantasy XI for Christmas back in 2003 and not only did it become my favorite Final Fantasy game, but a great online experience.  The game had a great story, amazing sound track, and I met many great players who I got to share questing with.  It was more then just a game, but a community.  There was so much to do and every time you accomplished something you felt great.  When you got Sky it was more then just a beautiful place in the sky you could go.  It was a collection of all the hard work you did to earn it.  Completing 12 Zilart Missions, running all over the place, shouting for parties, and having fun with other players along the way.

I tried to find another MMO to be my FFXI, but they failed.  However XIV looks to be that MMO.  It is like a new and improved XI.  Sure XI did some things better, but ARR is fun, has a great story, nice music, fun battle system, and you can do more solo or in smaller groups so it is like SE fixed all the major problems from XI.

@megakick If you have an account with FF14 1.0, you don't have to buy the game again, you can download the game for free (however you don't get the 30 free days).

Also, if you "paid" for at least 3 months in 1.0, you also get a legacy reduced rate of 9.99 a month.

Rynir

@frylock1987 You'd think they'd figure out by now that they suck at making MMO's.

Heck, Enix sucks at making FF games alltogether.

Bitterpill

@Mortigan76 Actually it the smart thing to why keep selling if you cant keep up with the users you have?

Yeah let piss the off the people that already bought this game even more?

@XxXDarkness0XxX You do realize that most new MMOs have a cap of around level 50 right? Hell, DC Universe Online started with a cap of 30, and the game is still going strong after two years. Not to mention, the producer of FFXIV has already stated his goal of adding new content every three months or so. All this doesn't bother me half as much as the fact that they can't seem to get their server issues together; there's plenty left for me to do on this game, considering I've been playing it for maybe three weeks total.

GT_APE
GT_APE

@XxXDarkness0XxX Why does that cookie-cutter/WoW standard have to be your main goal??? To me that repetitiveness ultimately makes a game boring. Give the game a chance to change the mold.

@keech Ironic that it took a game with such a tarnished history to achieve it.

@toddx77 ffxi is still going strong, the best thing about that game is the difficulty...its keeps out the lesser crowd.

@toddx77 It had a better story than all the single FF games. That came out afterwards.

@toddx77

Right there with you, I played FFXI for around 8 years.  Played lots of other MMO's after, none lasted even a year before I got bored and burned out.

FFXIV doesn't entirely recapture that, but It's the first MMO I've played since then that I actually got excited to finally get to play in earnest.

@zimerust105 Lmao, never can understand the need some folks have to see a new IP fail. Just because it's not YOUR thing doesn't mean it's not amazing to the several thousand people next to you.

@zimerust105 It's already been a week and a half since early access and there's no signs of slowing. I wouldn't hold your breath about this game dying out so soon.

@greenballer Well to be honest, they probably didn't expect half of those beta testers to come back.  Lots of people will playing something for free, but the moment you start charging them, they're out.

What do you think about the game?

Can anyone elaborate? thanks...

toddx77

@jubdeidamasta And I think it is going to have a better story then many more single FF single games even XV which looks really cool.

toddx77
toddx77

@keech Same here.  Every other MMO I tried to play I would always quit before a year was up.  Some of them I came back to for a little bit like with WOW, but it was never constant.  I really started to miss that feeling, but luckily ARR has come out lol.

keech
keech

@JustPlainLucas @greenballer

Normally I would agree, but they should of assumed all the original 1.0 players would be playing, that most of the 1.0 players who quit would be coming back.  That a good chunk of the new beta testers would be buying the game, and looked at the pre-order numbers.

When you add it up that way, it should of been no surprise.

@KainIV Thanks its informative I've been a lifelong Final Fantasy fan I will definitely pick this up thanks

KainIV

I should also clarify... You don't have to reach level 50 (the current cap) to level other classes and jobs. You are free to level everything on one character, in true FF fashion. Crafting classes are also apparently well done, but I haven't gone down that road yet.

Sorry for the novel. I like to be thorough.

KainIV
KainIV

@bluespire1 The game is really good, in my opinion. But then, I am a long time Final Fantasy fan who played Final Fantasy XI off and on for years, and who also had a love-hate with WoW.

It has been very well optimized to find a customizable but intuitive UI center that fits both PS3 and PC. That's no small feat by itself.

The music is a blend of Uematsu and Soken (a fairly new addition to the team), and is really top notch, MMO or not.

The environments are beautiful, the character animations are fluid, and the gameplay is simple but entertaining (if you don't mind hotbar-styled combat).

The story is also well done, and it drive the player to level 50 in whatever class/job they choose to pursue first. In my opinion, it is better than both XII and XIII in terms of storyline, but that's also just my opinion. The game draws from FF lore from I-X, mostly, and is really excellent. It also draws some plot elements and enemy types from XI.

The bad parts... Obviously they misjudged the number of servers they'd need at launch, and that has caused no end to complaining. But, the game IS stable... until they put up more data centers 9/3 - 9/4, it was a miserable experience trying to log in to the game. They kept worlds at a cap artificially, and that's what caused the 1017 fiasco. It was a developer-imposed error that circumvented the fully functioning queue system, but it really sucked.

Also, the cutscenes are not fully voiced. Some are, some are not, and the choices seem rather sporadic. You'd think all main story cutscenes would have been fully VO, but that's not the case. Still, the VOs are decent, and when they are there, not at all terrible. There just aren't enough of them.

Also, after 50, you have the option of leveling any other class/job you might like, but if you burned through the story quests and the quest hubs, you'll have to grind it out in FATEs and other stuff like that. So, it does have the JRPG/MMO standby: grinding.

These are all general things, but maybe it gives you a feel for the game? Off the cuff, I would say I am loving every second of it. The world really draws me in, but that's me. Hope this helps.
