Sony launches PSN Play program

Preorder bonuses offered for downloadable slate of four games including Street Fighter III Third Strike Online, BloodRayne Betrayal; gamers who get all four to receive Payday: The Heist for free.

As Microsoft's Summer of Arcade downloadable game promotion winds down later this month, Sony's own PlayStation Network push will just be getting started. Sony today detailed the PlayStation Network Play program, a series of four anticipated PSN releases with perks for preorders and PlayStation Plus members.

Third Strike leads the first wave of PSN Play games.

The inaugural PSN Play lineup consists of Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition, The Baconing, BloodRayne: Betrayal, and Renegade Ops and will be released in consecutive weeks beginning August 23. Those who purchase all four of those games on the PSN by September 19 will be eligible to download a fifth game, Payday: The Heist, for free when it launches . Payday: The Heist will cost $20 (preorders begin September 20), while the remainder of the PSN Play titles will sell for $15.

A free game isn't the only perk of PSN Play. Sony is opening up preorders for the four main titles on August 9, with those who reserve the titles in advance being given free PlayStation 3 themes, as well as an extra bonus specific to the game in question. For example, those who preorder Street Fighter III will be able to add the game's boss Gill to the playable roster without needing to beat the game with every character. However, the window to preorder each game will close five days before the game's launch.

Finally, PSN Play will have a perk for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Active members of Sony's premium plan will automatically receive 20 percent off each game purchased from the PSN Play program. The full list of PSN Play games, with release dates, preorder cutoffs, and their unique bonuses, is below:

@Taxonomy: Yes I would definitively like a Capcom vs SNK 3 that would be totally awesome!

Digital Downloads make it near impossible for collectors to build a collection, as it may be a more cost effective choice, I just don't think that I should have restrictions on how many times I download the game movie or item 3rd Strike for the win It seems that capcom listened to the fans that were so upset by SF4 just give us Capcom Vs Snk 3 already

still seems to add up to having to spend a lot of money for those few "advantages"..

Its pretty obvious now that Sony is trying go fully intagible by targeting any advantage there is by going to a retail store and buying a game on a disc. First the online pass features and now the its own pre-order incentives.

Wish the game lineup was a bit better, none of these games really peak my interest. But hey if your interested in any of these, not a bad deal if your a PSN+ member.

@megakick Yes some of the bonuses are lame but as usual for you, you miss the point entirely. PS Plus members get 20% off ALL of them and all users(PS Plus or not) who get all 4 get Payday: The Heist for free.FREE.Many of the people seeing this was already gonna buy those 4 already, like me.Getting a free game and a major discount is the real bonus. Pay attention will ya.

Wait what u won't b able to get Gill unless u preorder or is it the im too lazy to do it the hard way insta unlock? Some of those bonuses are pretty lame. IMO Its a trick to get your money with crappy bonuses. Pre-ordered, release date pushed back *Cough* Duke Nukem Forever*Cough* sorry.

It seems really weird to me that you would have to preorder a digital downloadable game...I mean preorders were created to make sure you got a copy of a game when it was releaed out of fear that a retailer would run out, with no possibility of running out why the preorder. Oh yea $$$$.

seems good for ps plus members or people who actually planned on buying all of the games.

@irishdude199210 that depends on your credit card, if it is international then yes you can buy from pretty much anywhere in the world .
@zidan4000 Ok, so can you buy american psn cards using a european credit card? Would there be problems using whatever I donwloaded if I'm using a PAL ps3 rather than a NTSC one?
1. Importing cards doesn't restrict to a country. 2. You can only activate an NTSC PSN card with an NTSC PSN account. 3. You can use NTSC content with NTSC games on a PAL machine. The game and the content's region have to match, it doesn't matter what region your console is however.

this is cool and all but... i thought the biggest perk of digital distribution of games was to eliminate pre orders. you know when the games are coming and when your respective game marketplace refreshes, and you download at your leisure... either way, it seems weird, but it seems pretty darn promising! if i had a ps3 id do this

Business Promotions are awesome thing with out it they will all have to pay full price. All business are greedy but those who make good products and service I appreciate them. Sony might have poor service but the PlayStation products are high quality. =) salute to that guy that made PlayStation Sector

It is a good way to 1-up Microsoft's Summer of Arcade, but these really need better names. PSN Play program? That's hardly descriptive. Not that it's a huge deal, but who is in charge of naming things at Sony?

JadeNic
JadeNic

This is pretty cool. It is like the 360s Summer of Arcade, but stepped up a notch with the bonus content/themes and day one discounts for plus subscribers. Well, at least it is a nice little incentive if you were already going to buy the games, anyway.

Stressthesky
Stressthesky

Capcom goes by the all too familiar $=€ while the rest of the publishers have enough sense to lower the euro price. Why do you insist on making such a bad impression Capcom?

FallenOneX
FallenOneX

I know my comment will be thumbed down to the point of not meeting the criteria, but oh well. If Sony had tried to push a program like this when my first 360 died, I'd be playing a PS3 right now, and that was before Playstation Plus. Still a great deal if you're a member though, especially if you don't plan on buying all of the games just to get the free one.

@irishdude199210 http://www.pcgamesupply.com/buygames/sony-playstation-network-cards/?gclid=CIbRreS7uaoCFesLtAodW0Q54w never tried it myself as i buy cards using a different online service which is only available in the middle east , but that site delivers the cards online , there are also bunch of other sites but they sell 50$ cards for 58$ , still seems like a good bargain compared to europe , a little advice , try making both north american and british accounts , sometimes the UK get really great deals that are cheaper than the US deals and vice versa. i hope that helped.

The Baconing is Deathspank 3, right? I had fan finishing the first 2, may as well give the baconing a spin. Never been interested in BloodRayne, I'll pass. Renegade Ops doesn't look too bad. Street fighter has always been my favorite fighting game so that goes without question. What do I get if I only buy 3 out of 4, Sony?

@irishdude Yeah Reyveign is right Amazon does have them(you can actually have the card sent to you or get the digital version where they give you the card code right away). I'm pretty sure Gamestop.com sells the card the same way(you can have it sent to you or use the code right away).

Reyveign

@irishdude199210 You can get PSN cards from Amazon.com, I believe. Not JUST from there, but that's the only place I know of off the top of my head. Could be wrong though. Worth checking at least.
