Sony confirms a bunch of indie games for PS4, including Spelunky

Spelunky, Nidhogg, and more are on their way to the PlayStation 4 platform soon.

Today, Sony revealed a long list of indie games that are on their way to PS4.

Spelunky: The PS4 version of this office-favorite will include 1080p graphics, the ability to upload replays to the leaderboards, and more social features in the daily challenge. And the game will feature cross-buy, so if you already have it on PS3 or Vita, you automatically own it on PS4!

Nidhogg: This competitive fencing game will now let you experience it's muliplayer action with a PlayStation 4 controller. "Exclusive to the PS4 version, the built-in tournament mode now indicates your fencer’s color on DualShock 4′s light bar."

Axiom Verge: This sci-fi side-scroller is also going to make its way to Vita.

Source: A Metroidvania-style adventure game.

Skulls of the Shogun: This update of the stylish strategy game will add a new single-player episode, new Tanuki Monk character, and a new progression system.

Chasm: A "procedurally-generated RPG platformer."

Drifter: Also coming to Vita, Drifter is an "open-world, sandbox, space trading game with a procedurally-generated galaxy."

Chariot: "A 2D, couch co-op adventure platformer in which two players must work together to guide a chariot through underground levels using physics-based mechanics such as pushing, pulling, riding, reeling, and so on."

Escape Goat 2: You can never have enough goat games.

Apotheon: A side-scrolling action game made "in the visage of ancient Greek pottery."

Ironclad Tactics: "A fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots!"

Starwhal: Just the Tip: Also coming to PS3, this game has you "navigating your narwhal to tag your opponent’s heart and protect your own. Of course, the narwhals themselves wiggle all over the place in spastic fits of salty marine protest, but therein lies at least half the fun."

Jamestown Plus: The original experience plus new ships, new levels, and a new chapter in the Jamestown story.

i hate you sony, i didn't buy a ps4 so i could play indie games -.-

What's with all the 12-year olds complaing about games being released for their new console?! Think about how it was when the ps3 released... At least this time we get all kinds of awesome indies to make the wait, for all the major AAA titles to come, alot easier. Stop complaining. If you can't handle a slow start. You shouldn't have bought a new system at launch. Spoiled brats...

Spelunky and Nidhogg, that's great. But what about Starbound, Risk of Rain, and Dungeon of The Endless? Don't stop, secure more indies, Sony.

i love indie games but sony should really start reaching out to AAA titles, the vita wont be successful with indies alone.

Geez, someone send these indi devs to art school, and stop making pixelated shit from the 90's.  It was okay for a while but now there are just too many in that style.
Some of the games look like fun in regards to gameplay, but they should be using proper engines like Unreal with proper lighting effects etc.

I can't believe the pointless whining below. I suppose these people would prefer no games come out at all between AAA titles, instead of indies. It's fine if you don't like them, but it seems they think no one should ever enjoy them. I also must have missed the part where Sony put a gun to their head and forced them to buy/play these games.

I'm tired of Sony giving us all these games. Especially for those people who never owned a PS3 last gen.

Can we please slow it down a bit? They're whizzing past me so fast I'm starting to become dizzy and think there aren't any games on the PS4

Do people really like these games? I tried Spelunky and it is so mind numbingly tedious that I was never even tempted to try the full game.

Pretty much the same experience I've had from most other indies at the same time. People below are actually happy about this it seems!

Nidhogg looks crazy. Wasn't surprised one bit when I saw the awards pop up.

Lol, no wonder the Xbox One is $500. It actually has games.

Prepare to hear people cry about more games being available to play solely because they're indie even though that moniker only prefers to their business model and distribution, not their quality. Many indie games today would have been the same games major companies would have put out themselves at least 10 years ago. As if every non-indie game is good, if only. Fact is, most games are bad regardless of being part of the regular market development cycle or not. The games ranging from average to masterpieces were always the minority. So many companies have just put out subpar games for one reason or another and most games released you have never seen or even heard of.

PS4 continues to grow the amount of games I want for it, however none of them are system sellers for me. I'm still waiting for PS4 and Xbox One to give me a system selling game before I invest into their system.

Sony did say they were going to fully support indie games this was expected.

MLB 14, Bound by Flame then Wolfenstein and Watch Dogs all in May this is not the time to panic.

Thankfully we have the PC Massturd race to sort through all the indie games so the consoles only get the best of the best.

GOGOHeadray
GOGOHeadray

I love indie games as much as the next man ( I have outlast, resogun, don't starve , among others); but I think there are too many coming at us at once and not enough of the AAA titles that we bought these systems for. With that being said drifter looks like a interesting concept.

Call yourself gamers all you do is sit there and bitch about every game that comes out.this gen as just started give it a chance f****ing hell cheer up be happy noobs

I didn't buy a next gen for indies. It's like an over priced ouya.

Its sad. almost all of these games could have flown on the SNES. Its good to know that the majority of games today can operate on a system that launched 23 years ago. Isn't it great to see the leap in technology?

C_A_G_E
C_A_G_E

@kovaras1984  Whats the point of the hate. It's not like these indie games are keeping other games from releasing...

With that said, none of these seem interesting at all... I can't wait for MLB next week though

bob15x
bob15x

@Sumpskildpadde its not that.  the problem is almost every bit of news out of the sony camp is indies and social crap, not about the big titles.

Kind of shows where their focus is.  They pick up old pc indies and have them ported.

People did not buy ps4s for this

they need to start spitting out news about the big games other than announcing delays.

bob15x
bob15x

@Dannystaples14 i bought about 1 indie game all of last gen.  Overall I have no interest and not what I bought a ps4 for.  Problem is, this is all Sony talks about.  So if MS is tv tv tv than sony is indie indie indie and there is no argument against that.

spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@Dannystaples14 It seems at least I'm not the only one that has no interest in games that look like  they came out 2 decades ago. If that's what they like good for them. But If I want to play games like that I will pull out my Sega genesis console or the SNES. I didn't buy a new console to play games like this. But it is good proof graphics are not that important to some people .

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@Dannystaples14  Yep! A lot of the games are a lot of fun, but obviously not for everyone. I personally like Spelunky, though I will agree it is tedious. But such is the nature of rogue-likes. Jamestown is also a lot of fun and very challenging, if you like shmups.

RedWave247
RedWave247

@team_gurren  Aside from Titanfall (which not everyone is interested in), what does it have?

canuckbiker

Are you trying to tell me a AAA title like ride to hell is not automatically great because of a larger budget?

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@xOmniCloudx  That kind of hits the nail on the head: these would have been hits 10 years ago. Indie games are good, but they aren't going to share the stage with big production AAA games. Not to say that indie games can't be as good, but an indie release will never be the event that a big game is.

BamaGoatt
BamaGoatt

@chaos12391  I hear bear simulator is coming to ps4 I am sure that is going to sell a gazillion units.

Sumpskildpadde
Sumpskildpadde

@GOGOHeadray  Yeah, because when a new system releases new AAA titles magically appears simultaniously! Come on man. The system hasn't even been out for 6 months. It takes forever to make a good video game. Not every company rushes out half assed next gen ports (like AC4: Black Flag and BF4). So be patient, man. If you can't handle a slow start you should have waited to buy a PS4. Late 2014 and early 2015 is going to be amazing though. So many good games coming out. And E3 will have us all drooling with expectation.

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@GOGOHeadray  The strategy here is to keep people who bought the PS4 tide over with a bunch of indie games that came out anywhere from 1 to 3 years ago while the AAA titles slowly release. It's pretty clear Sony just wanted to get the console out the door to compete with MS and N.

xOmniCloudx
xOmniCloudx

@queupthudere  I buy consoles for good games and you get good games with indies just like non-indies and same with the bad games. Games stop coming to a console so you get their successor if you want more. That's  how it's always worked. Unless you're saying every non indie game is worth your time and money just because. lol nope.

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

If Nintendo didn't have competition, we'd still be console gaming on a nes.

adub424
adub424

It would be awesome if they made cartridge versions compatible with the SNES. Sure it will never happen but to play on my Super Nintendo on the old controller would rock.

customx5

@C_A_G_E @kovaras1984 Actually that's his point, Sony wants to push a bunch of indie games because they don't have any exclusives, you guys got suckered into a 1080p   indiestation 4

xantufrog

@bob15x @SumpskildpaddeE3 is coming up - if they spit out announcements about all the big AAA titles now then what are they going to talk about at E3?

Elixir99
Elixir99

@Pierce_Sparrow @xOmniCloudx  of course they wont, they don't have as much money for the ridiculous amount of advertising AAA's gets, the money they need to fool you into buying shitty average games that have cost them millions to make. People need to get their heads of of their asses and realise you don't need the latest 3d technology to enjoy a game and stop criticizing a system because they are filling their library with indie games that people want to play

C_A_G_E
C_A_G_E

@customx5 @C_A_G_E @kovaras1984 So XBox one must have a ton o AAA games that released while Sony was focusing on indie right?...

The games are on their own time line. Sony focus remains on getting games of all kinds...

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@Elixir99 @Pierce_Sparrow @xOmniCloudx  But you're talking about games like CoD, which fit into that bland category of bloated, AAA games. This doesn't take into account AAA that actually succeed in the use of their massive budgets. You can craft some fantastic indie games, sure, but very rarely can an indie game achieve a storytelling level of say Metal Gear Solid or Last of Us. Having a large budget and utilizing high production values offers a higher level of immersion into a gaming world. There are plenty of great indie games with amazing stories. Heck, one of my favorite games of all time is To The Moon, which amazingly, powerfully emotional and has an excellent story. But I still don't have the kind of immersion in that game that I do, say, Metal Gear Solid 4, where the character feel as cinematic as a movie. Indie games are great for alternative experiences, but a good AAA game is on a completely different level.
