Sony: $399 is "magic price" for PS4

Masayasu Ito adds that efforts were made to include PlayStation Eye camera, but this proved too costly.

Sony originally planned to include a PlayStation Eye with all PlayStation 4 units, but to keep the system at the "magic price" of $399, the decision was made not to bundle the camera, executive Masayasu Ito told Business Spectator in a new interview.

The Xbox One's $499 price point includes the Kinect 2.0 camera included with every unit. Unlike Sony, Microsoft has no plans to sell an Xbox One bundle without Kinect.

This decision was driven by "pressure from above," the publication reports, adding that Sony is already losing an estimated $60 per every console sold. Sony aims to recoup this loss by selling peripherals, software, and services.

The PS4's lack of a packed-in camera isn't all that upsetting to SCE CEO Andrew House, as he said he does not deem the PlayStation Eye as a system-seller.

"Certainly for the earlier part of the lifecycle, the vast majority of the audience that we speak to tells us that their primary wish is for the full controller interface and there's not necessarily a huge emphasis being placed on camera interaction," House said.

Over time, however, House said Sony could "adjust messaging" on this front. Sony, and other console manufacturers, are known to release new system bundles after launch.

The PS4 launches on November 15.

We used a lot of student workers so that this magic could happen.

I will still wait for a price drop or some really good PS4 only games. With my new PC build finishing in the next month or so I will be alright with my PC and PS3 for quite a while.

I've never understood why people like cameras or motion controls.  I've been gaming for over 25 years. I have tons of friends who gaming and I don't know a single person who really enjoys playing with a Kinect or PS Eye.  I like buttons!

The good news is, you can still buy a 7 year old XB360 for 300-400 dollars!  What a bargain!

xbox one is $100 more, has slower hardware, invades your privacy, makes you agree to ads and third party information gathering..

yeah im sure it will do just great

Good.

Ideally I would have liked to have seen it come with the PlayStation Eye. But I suppose that the price had to stay low, since everyone is broke and this isn't 2006 anymore. If people couldn't afford a $500/$600 console then, I'm curious as to why Microsoft thinks it will sell now. Without it being forced on every unit, it simple becomes a peripheral.

And we all know peripherals usually have the best games..

"House is prepared to "adjust messaging" over the time – indicating that Sony may bundle the camera with every PlayStation 4 further down the track when it is ready to target a wider audience."

And to every one that said "Sony isn't forcing a camera down our throats"....well from this statement, they might do. So that leaves the question..where will that leave your argument if they do. Hide?, make pitiful excuses?.

Too bad because the PS4 itself (along with Xbone) doesn't have any "magic" with them

Both are focused on crappy features I don't care to have as a gamer. Besides, the games themselves are dissappointing upcoming gen: boost in graphics but no new gamestyle. Just a PS3.5 to me, with some polygons and subs fee. Ah screw this I'm going back to PS2.

I honestly prefer not to have the camera. The option of purchasing later on is a great idea, Sony is my choice for christmas, can't wait to get my PS4 !

i disagree

putting lame specs into their consoles in hopes of devs working their ass to optimaze it (which is very possible) instead of making a 500-600$ console with top notch specs and controller (the duelcrap 4 is still crap for shooters because of the twin analog sticks)

and also, game sharing or game trading, for an over-priced market such as the PSN

buying digital should have it's benefits besides the comfort

What a novel idea. Why waste money putting in a peripheral that no one will use? Right Microsoft?  Poor MS, all those Kinects that are all going to be either in the trash or in closets.  I get WHY MS is bundling Kinect with all consoles with the hope that if the Kinect has a large user base, devs will be more likely to make games that use it but we saw how well that worked out for Nintendo.

Glad to see they learned their lesson with the PS3 launch. $500 - $600 doesn't fly well for a console, and losing $60 per unit is a drop in the bucket compared to what was being lost initially for each PS3. Looks like a win-win for gamers and businessmen.

@SuperDutchy I play for more than 25 years and I really enjoyed the Wii. And if we consider a mouse some kind of motion controler, when it comes to FPS a mouse it´s way better than a controler.

But in general terms I agree with you, buttons are generally the way to go.

@calamityo they're talking about adding the camera while keeping the $400 price point down the line. Then it would be considered free which we want.

@LexLas However, if you get one of the PS4 bundles then you don't have an option for the camera.

@LexLas Me too, I'd prefer to have the option of buying the camera when there's a feature or game for it I want. I resent Microsoft's angle of requiring people to buy it and then wait for something cool to happen someday.,maybe.

@quickshooterMk2 You apparently have never seen or don't understand what the specs mean. Ps4 is far more powerful. Definitely not a fanboy, just amazed you miss facts like that.

loyalethics

@quickshooterMk2 WTF are you talking about? PS4 has better tech then XB1 for a more affordable price. Not only that when you buy PSN+ you can download select games that would usually cost 60$ for free99 and get discounts on select games. Microsoft not doing that at all with XBL they prices stay the same and they just price gouging! its games on XBL market thats years old still being sold at a new release price. Not only that at launch the PS4 is going to have multiple free to play games that you don't even have to have a PSN account to play. Sony is giving plenty of value to the consumer unlike MicroTransaction$oft

@kbaily I still think you have to have the Kinect connected to the console, you're just able to shut if off completely. I'm passing on both consoles for now, until I can see who clearly has the best exclusives, or the best online experience. Last time around it was Microsoft (for the online experience), this time around, it could be Sony now that they are putting subscription money into their network.

@PinkmanBitch : People clamoured for a new console, before the planned for end of this generations cycle. So as a result we were given these stop gap, to quote cboye18  "just a PS 3.5 to me", in order to make a quick and massive windfall profit for both Sony and Microshaft, before they release the TRUE next gen consoles in 2 or three years time!

I actually know people who have a 360 now which has been "modded" who are going for the Xbone, in the hope that it will be the first console to be "modded" again to play "back up " discs.

There is also the question of cross platform gameplay between Xbone and PC, which might be a selling point for Microshafts offering?

Which opens up another possible reason for buying Microshafts new lower spec console!

@PinkmanBitch For a lot of people I'm sure you're right, but I'm a 360 owner moving to the PS4 next gen specifically because of the price and Kinect requirement.

Why didn't you get rid of the 360 since you regretted having it. Neither the PS3 or 4 won me over at all.

I have the same case! The airflow is amazing and it's damn roomy. My last case was a mid-tower, which couldn't manage its heat well, and didn't really have enough room for the parts I wanted. I think it could actually fit inside the Cosmos II.

@phbz @SuperDutchy Also a twenty-five year plus gamer, and I likewise often enjoyed the Wii. However, it was still a physical device you held onto and moved, I was a little more uncomfortable with reaching for and grabbing things in a Kinect game. That said, I did like the streamlining of menus and some AI interaction it allows with its combination of voice and motion controls. Once perfected, it'll be a far better alternative to controlling the UI for the console OS and most apps, in my opinion. And it's fine for swiping, wiping, and dancing; as well as jumping, kicking, hitting and punching to a lesser extent. I would also point out wheels and handlebars, triggers, balls (as in the tracking variety), mice, sticks and other levers, dials, scopes, and styli (plural for stylus?) have all had their "better than a button" uses.

@SureBigBuster @cboye18:  I could afford both consoles if I were stupid enough to believe all the hype, but actually NEITHER of them interest me at the moment.

I just don't see a big enough advance in actual gaming to lay out so much money, when I have a fully functional Xbox 360, as well as a PS2 and a PC.

For me Sony has the best hardware this time by far, and though I am a long way from being a Sony fan, the PS4 NOT having the Playstation Eye is a great selling point. Why should I be forced to pay more money for a "Big Brother style" camera that I neither WANT or NEED?

I just want to be able to play good games, whether that be on a console or a PC.

@northArrow So would you have resented if Sony did the same thing?. After all they have just admitted that they were planning on selling one with it.

@loyalethics @quickshooterMk2 I just don't understand paying for a connectivity service that uses your already paid for internet connection.  That baffles me.

calamityo

@loyalethics Er, no PSN+ only give games that are at least 2 years old. Where their prices have dropped considerably lower than $60 - and it's only free till your subscription is renewed. Pretty dumb to pay to get discounts. The whole purpose of discounts is to entice customers. Not pay $ony, so you can get a discount - what type of logic is that?. Most loyalty programmes don't work like that!.

AxemanPhil

MS have have definitely said you can unplug it completely if you want, but only quite recently. Still a stupid idea forcing everyone to buy it.

@northArrow @PinkmanBitch same here IDL what M$ has been doing at all. Right after E3 I traded in my 360 got all the money I needed for PS4 and called it a day. Clearly I made the right decision on selecting a nextgen console.

ZOD777
ZOD777

@Seiki_sands @ZOD777 Well, nothing is truly 100% profit if you have any overhead or running costs.  What I mean by that is that all of the money goes directly to Sony and Microsoft.  Just like Costco membership fees (that is 100% profit for them), they don't give out a portion of it to developers or publishers.  In that way, it is 100% profit.

Seiki_sands
Seiki_sands

@ZOD777 It's significant profit, but certainly not 100%. The dedicated servers people play on the PC are often hosted by groups and clans generously allowing their fellow gamers to use them, but they do cost money.  The only company that comes close to offering the sort of extensive online all in one entertainment ecosystem that Sony and MS do is probably Steam and Itunes, and while both are free, both are also massive storefronts for a retail operation that is many orders of magnitude more successful than PSN's and XBL's digital content. I'm sure if 80%+ of console games were bought digitally from the console makers, as they are on PC, Sony and MS might fund their online infrastructure through store profits like Steam, but they aren't now, and are unlikely to be in the near future.

ZOD777
ZOD777

@pip3dream Then tell me why multiplatform games on PC, and PC exclusives do not charge for online gaming?  I don't suppose those servers operate on hopes and dreams and wishes either.  XBL and PSN+ are bogus fees that are 100% profit.  The only reason that console gamers seem to ignore it, or don't care, is because perhaps there is no alternative to gaming online.

pip3dream
pip3dream

@ZOD777 @loyalethics @quickshooterMk2 I'm trying my best not to be too trollish - but you do understand that the PSN network doesn't operate on hopes and dreams and wishes - that it operates on servers that sony pays for and it is a service that most people utilize that have a PS3 that is hooked up to the interwebs.  Same concept that Xbox Live does.

@nomadic_topgun What a boastful boring EMPTYHEAD you are.

I hope you can afford some real life FRIENDS as well, to keep you and your C3PO company!

Incidentally, I have a £2500 LAPTOP with a 960 gb SSD and dedicated Nvidia 770 graphics gpu, which can play ALL games at max on my 55" Samsung tv!

But whose counting!
