Sly Cooper movie coming in 2016, here's the first trailer

The movie is described as a "kinetic and comedic heist film" following Sly Cooper and his childhood friends; check out a trailer now.

[UPDATE] The trailer is now live. Check it out below.

Sony today announced a Sly Cooper movie. The animated film, due in 2016, is described as a "kinetic and comedic heist film" that will tell the story of orphaned raccoon thief Sly Cooper and his childhood friends (and partners in crime) Bentley Turtle and Murray Hippo. TMNT (2007) director Kevin Munroe wrote the screenplay and will direct the movie.

Here's the full description:

Sly learns of his birth family’s secret legacy; that he comes from a long line of talented and international thieves. Endowed with this knowledge, Sly and his friends are catapulted into a global adventure as they race to reassemble pieces of an ancient book holding The Cooper Clan’s family secrets before it can fall into the hands of Clockwerk – an evil Russian metallic owl bent on ending the Cooper family line. From romantic Parisian backdrops to the lush mountains of China, gritty film noir meets bright, colorful graphic novels in this origin story of the world’s greatest thief-turned-hero.

The Sly Cooper movie is in development at the same two studios working on the big-screen adaptation of Ratchet & Clank: Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment.

Rainmaker Entertainment's first theatrical credit was 2013's animated film Escape from Planet Earth, which was released by The Weinstein Company. As for Blockade Entertainment, the company previously created a trailer for Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno.

The first images of the Sly Cooper movie are included in this post. A trailer for the film will go live at 9 a.m., at which point we'll embed that in this story. The most recent entry in the Sly Cooper series was 2013's PlayStation 3-exclusive Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

The only thing that has me a bit worried is that Kevin Miller isn't back for the voice of Sly; I guess you can't win 'em all...

Not bad. But why did they make Murray's face wrong? That is the only negative part of this trailer in my opinion.

But Sly is not just for kids. Sly is amazing!

Animated kids films usually end up selling pretty well, and perhaps Sony hope a movie will resurrect an ailing IP.

Reading the title got me scared sh*tless that this would ruin my childhood. Seeing the trailer got from me a sigh of relief and a heart appeased that my childhood is in safe hands :D

I wonder if the Vu Du mama Ju Ju boss will be in this movie.  That song in the boss battle is SOOO catchy!!!!

I've played only the first game some time ago; I've really underestimated it but it was a great game in the end.

How about Jak and daxter the movie and put old voices and make it funny it work but sly wont.

This could be interesting. I'll probably give it a shot. What's the worst that could happen?

I wonder though, if they took the time they used to make this teaser and spent it on the actual movie, would it be released any sooner?

Also, who's doing the voice of Sly? Is it the same guy who does Raphael in the newest Turtles series? Sean Astin is it?

Still haven't played thieves in time.  Perhaps I should.

This may be the first time I've seen a game translated to a movie that actually makes sense. The teaser was great. I look forward to this.

Why is Murray so off-model? Bentley and Sly look pretty close. Even Murray's van looks like it does in the game.

slys face looks more pudgy & wider than in the game but ill still watch this

Could work, animated movies with humor can take in some big bucks. The movie Frozen is thought to make 1 billion dollars worldwide before it stops being shown at cinemas. What I would like to know is whether this movie will feature music by Sly and the Family Stone? If not, I think they should consider it.

Sly and Ratchet And Clank are two of my favorite franchises, so I may be seeing these in theatres.

Side note, I'm kinda glad the voice acting seems almost the same. In fact, that trailer feels true to how the games played (aside from the donut thing).

This probably would make the easiest transition to movie out of any video game. It's good great characters, an interesting story, and it accessible to a wide audience.

smart move. it might boost the branding of sly as long as its to a theatrical release and not a straight to dvd/blu ray

@VenkmanPHD I like Sly Cooper, but this did surprise me too. The IP had a measure of success on the PS2, but not so much after 2005.

@tinyname if you liked the older sly games, you should play it, it's very awesome.

Were all getting old! These young whipper-snappers don't know what it was like for us to have to go to a place called "a store" and buy a game. Walking ten miles in the snow with no shoes, and thunderstorms and ummm other bad stuff. Now they buy it from home with the Online! Sometimes I just like to shake my fist at kids nowadays....

@Travian1 I was wondering the same thing.  To me, it's either because he isn't bright pink in color, or it's because he doesn't have his glasses on.

@DarkJedi8_basic Why? All the characters are anthropmorphic. You'd be going CGI, anyway. Might as well just do it as a cartoon.

@Chr0noid@VargasUniverseAmerican McGee already did a successful kickstarter for an Alice in Wonderland short film (Alice:Otherlands) and he might do a feature film in the future. Would certainly be cool and most reviewers say that the Alice games' strong points are the set pieces and the atmosphere, not the gameplay bits.

@EasyComeEasyGo Yea Ascension was dissapointing. I bloody loved God Of War 1,2 & 3 though and there is real potential for a great movie franchise under the right control
